CUBI VI – 3D Model Design

Project Title: CUBI VI – 3D Model Design

Semester and Year Created: Fall 2025

Software Used: Tinkercad

For this project, I recreated CUBI VI (1963) by David Smith using only boxes to make the stacked shapes. I picked this sculpture because I wanted to try recreating its vertical and abstract design. It was tricky to get all the blocks stacked and rotated just right, even though I was only using rectangles. I used Tinkercad to carefully place each box so the model looked balanced and close to the original.

3D Model inspiration

For my 3D model inspiration, I chose the sculpture CUBI VI (1963) by David Smith. The sculpture is made of stacked geometric metal shapes arranged vertically. It has an abstract form that suggests balance, movement, and structure. I chose this sculpture because it uses simple geometric forms and strong vertical lines, which makes it a good reference for gesturing the idea of the sculpture in a 3D model.

“Fredrick The Dog”

Fall 2025

Tinkercad

I recreated a sculpture of a balloon dog made by Jeff Koons. I hated making this very much at the beginning, but by the end, I actually hated it maybe 2% less, so there’s that. I don’t think I’ll be going into 3D as a career, but I did kind of enjoy exploring it here. It was made mostly out of spheres and cylinders because I didn’t realize half-spheres existed till about halfway through, and I was already in a rhythm with it, so I just finished it. I think it turned out pretty well, I quite like it!

Kinetic Austere

Inspired by  Four Squares in (1969), sculpture by George Rickey at  New National Gallery, Berlin, Germany.

My 3D Design was inspired by the Kinetic Sculptor, George Rickey. What inspired my project was how subtle and simple the sculpture initially looked and discovering the reason for being created. My process for replicating this was really simple and straight forward creating squares with copy+paste methods and mimicking the angles of the original squares in the sculpture.

Title: Modernist Female Head

Semester/Year: Fall 2025

Tinkercad

I picked this artwork because the long face and simple shape caught my eye. In Tinkercad, I just used basic shapes and lined them up to match the look of the sculpture. I adjusted the height and curves a bit until it felt close enough. My goal was just to recreate the style in a simple way.

Moai recreation

As I mentioned in my last post, I was inspired by the Moai statue due to its meaning and cultural significance, and the movie “Night at the Museum,” which featured the Moai Statue.

Moai Statue

Dominique Broadhead

For my project, I was inspired to recreate the Moai statue after rewatching Night at the Museum, where the Moai statue had great humor, and I appreciated the art style of the statue. I decided to recreate it. The Moai statue is from Polynesian culture and is made to represent the ancestors watching over the descendants .

Learning about 3D was a very nice experience specially with Tinkercad website and its easy to work with tools that allows to drag and drop and re-size objects as desired.

I like the sculpture made by Dennis Oppenheim because I wanted to see how much closer I could get to the real materials using Tinkercad website and by using its cutting, aligning and grouping tools allowed me to develop the sculpture and rotate it to almost have a one to one 3D replica.
