First of all, I really enjoyed this move, and I’m glad that Prof. B. assigned it. It made me understand even more what I have learned during this short semester. I would categorize the family’s way of life as personal selling. They applied selling techniques such as sales presentation in-person, conversations – the family built a relationship with customers in order to influence them to purchase the products, and demonstration – they presented their products’ work and its benefits. By employing these tools in order to increase sales, the family used similar sales tactics as luxurious car dealerships marketing tactics are employed. Most of the time car dealers are influencing people to finalize their purchase by transmitting that the key for happiness are their products. Same as The Joneses did. However, this might be unethical. I think that the way car dealers, but mostly how The Joneses marketed their products are unethical. The family intentionally influenced the neighbors to their own advantage to buy their products. Of course, this manipulation of influence was planned and finalized without the buyer’s knowledge. So, that’s why I think that the way of how the products were sold is not ethical. If I was one of their friends, most likely I’d buy their products as well. They knew what the neighbors needed, and they knew very well how to attract people. The only thing that I’d do differently, and I’m doing differently in my everyday life, is that I buy products that I really need, and not because I want to be like others. As a result, at the point of discovering the truth I would not have any disappointing feelings because I would feel like I haven’t wasted money just to be equal to them.

Assignment Week E

The pitch that resonated with me the most, in the Shark Tank episode, is the KETTLE GRYP. This product was planned and created very cleverly by satisfying customer want and especially need.. Kettle Gryp is a gym accessory for hand weights that provides the possibility to use a dumbbell as a kettlebell by attaching a well constructed plastic gryp to the existing dumbbell’s handle, as a result having a real kettlebell. Kettle gryp is able to hold firm weights up to 55 lbs. The product set up instructions are very easy to understand, and to make it work on the dumbbell. Thus, different aged customers are able to use it. Once the kettle gryp is in its open stage the customer needs to place the dumbbell, in the specified marked location, close the kettle gryp, secure the latch, and the kettlebell is ready to exercise with.  In order to do different exercises, we usually need different kinds of equipment, and mainly different kinds of weights, spending a significant amount of money. However, with this product we don’t have to worry anymore about buying separate kettlebells, spending tons of money, and looking for a space to store them in a small apartment. The most important is that it provides the possibility to execute different, and more movements safely. That’s why customers need this product. I love the idea of this new product, and I think that the shark made a very good investment. Kettle Gryp could be best positioned to appeal to customers by making a packaging that jumps it out from the crowd. There are few competitors, but their product differs in many points of view.  Also, it would be beneficial to design a package that matches very well the product, but focusing on the customer as well. For instance, applying attractive colors, adding motivational pictures, and making the customer realize that this product fits them the best. In addition, the brand plays a significant role also. Since, most of the time the purchasing decision is influenced by the brand it is essential to create a brand that will make customers recognize that they can trust not only the product but the brand as well.

Assignment Week C

Packing up your life and belongings is a difficult task to do. However, moving to Salt Lake City, getting to know it, exploring it, and being involved in its culture were exciting events. I was over a hard day of arranging my apartment, when my body started losing energy and it needed to be recharged with some food. I haven’t had the chance to cook that day, so I decided to satisfy my need by ordering a tasty meal from an Italian restaurant located in the city.

Studying marketing the first thing that came to my mind was to apply the buying process stages in order to start the satisfaction. First of all the process started in recognizing that there is a problem, I was hungry, and that the need warrants some action. Usually, people act in resolving a problem upon two factors: (1)looking at what they have and what they need, and (2) the importance of the problem. Of course, the problem was important because I was hungry, but I did not have too much money, and I needed specifically an Italian tasty, and consistent meal.

After recognizing the problem, and being conscious of my budget limit, I started to search for information. Since I didn’t know the area, where I moved, very well, the most helpful tool to look for an Italian restaurant was Google search. During my research, my main preferences were to have Pasta Bolognese, a large portion, to have it delivered, and to receive it in less than 30 minutes. I was very curious what the searching system would provide me, since I was in a new place. However, if there was nothing that matched my requirements, I already had some information about restaurants that can be found all over the U.S, based on my past purchasing and consumption experience.

Entering all my preferences in the filter section of the search engine, many cool restaurants with good reviews came up, but the few that matched every preference inserted in the filter were: The Old Spaghetti Factory, Cucina Toscana, and Olive Garden Italian Restaurant. So, this was a moment to evaluate these alternatives and make a choice that meets my financial and psychological requirements.

After much evaluation between the alternatives at some point, I decided to choose The Old Spaghetti Factory. Several factors influenced my purchase decision from this restaurant. Other than it met all my preferences, the restaurant offered a discount opportunity since it was my first purchase from them. Also, they did not have any delivery fee which was very convenient for my budget, and what I really liked was that they sent a free cake as dessert, called Cannoli. Overall, I was very satisfied with the restaurant’s benefits, taste of the food, fast delivery, and especially the “cannoli” made me happy. I’m considering ordering again and again from The old Spaghetti Factory.

Applying the decision making process to my needs made me realize that Restaurant owners intensively pay attention to the market exchange. Also, they pay attention to the buyer/customer behavior. In fact, looking at some statistics in the Restaurant industry’s revenue, there was an increase thanks to their understanding of the market. Being able to recognize buyers’ needs&wants helps the market exchange operation to achieve success.

Although the decision making process is a quite standard process, there are no two people who make their decision the same way. In fact, organizations are always developing themselves in order to provide service for every customer with different preferences. My preferences would compare to other consumers with different factors such as personal factors, situational factors, psychological factors, and social factors. These factors are beneficial for the consumer and for marketers at the same time. Consumer gets what he wants, and needs, while marketers, analyzing the consumer’s behavior,  satisfy their preferences for a profit.

Assignment: Week A

One of my favorite stores is Zara. This store is a clothing and accessories retailer that managed its projects to spread its products globally. ZARA, a brand of the Inditex Group, is a vertically integrated retailer, which means that they control the design, manufacturing, and distribution of all its products worldwide. Their market targets women, men, and children of almost every age. The firm, being a fast fashion industry, sets its objectives to protect society and environment by introducing eco-stores, recycling processes, and energy saving appliances. In fact, their core values support their contribution to the sustainable development of society and the environment in which we interact. However, the company was pointed out by several ethical issues.

In order to be a sustainable company, sustaining activities without adding problems to the environment, Zara created a program called “closing the loop”. This program consists of creating a life cycle for their products where resources are used so efficiently that no waste is created. In other words, it is to make sure that no textile items get dumped into landfill, which causes pollution and is bad for the environment. The process consists in collecting, reusing, and recycling old garments. This is when their customers drop off their pieces of old clothing or accessories to their stores and the company sends them to the recycling factories. The garments usually undergo a process called ‘repair, resale or recycle’. In addition, to show the public that its social responsibility is essential, and how dedicated they were to this program, ZARA collaborates with non-profit organizations, recycling companies, textile manufacturers and recycling technologists.

An organization being socially responsible, and sustainable leads to success, but at the same time ethical issues can lead to negative consequences. Zara, according to some websites’ evaluation, is acting unethically in many fields. For instance, their Code of Conduct for Manufacturers and Suppliers states that they follow the strict laws of “working hours are not extensive” and “wages are paid”. However, in 2017 some news was spread that young workers in Istanbul were being forced to work extensive hours without being paid their wages or compensated. Another ethical issue arose when a report by the Clean Clothes Campaign stated that ZARA sourced products from Chinese factories that sandblasted jeans, even though ZARA promised to end the practice. Also, Zara’s Animal Welfare Policy bans fur, and angora in their clothing products, but the company still uses wool, leather, and exotic animal hair. This caused ZARA to be questioned for their policies which also caused the change of the brand image in customers eyes. In fact, many people stopped buying their products as they felt deceived.

A company the more transparent it is the more successful, trusted and loved it is. Based on some research, I would recommend, in order to avoid unfavorable situations and critics, that the firm, Zara, should avoid ethical issues such as misleading customers, and be more socially responsible. Since the company’s products are highly demanded by its customers, they should introduce 100% eco fabrics components in their clothing and abandon polyester, cotton, and linen in order to reduce pollution. They definitely should act ethically and avoid violating the Code of Conduct by introducing new key management initiatives in order to not only succeed at any cost but to make employees feel comfortable and happy at the workplace. Rewarding employees based on their productivity could be beneficial for both the company and employees.

In conclusion, Zara being a very expanded organization reached major countries with its products. Ethical issues were recognized in the past years during the company’s operation. Unethical actions come to the surface having a negative impact on the firm. However, Zara created a program to protect the environment showing social responsibility. Is very hard to deal with so many things being a big company such as Zara, but it is very important to not ignore rules in order to succeed.
