Summary

The fallacy I chose is appeal to emotion. An appeal to emotion is an effort to win an argument without facts, logic, or reason, but instead by manipulating the emotions of the audience. For example, a man named Tim was speeding on the highway and got pulled over by police. He then tries to talk himself out of getting a ticket by saying that he’s struggling financially and how it would be a burden if he paid the ticket. He then says that it will make his life more difficult and asks the police officer if he can be let off with a warning. The driver is attempting to get sympathy from the officer, which is an appeal to emotion. He's attempting to appeal to the officer's sympathy in an effort to protect himself from the fallout from their action. By making an emotional appeal, Tim hopes to distract attention from the offense (speeding) and place it on unrelated personal issues.
