Pitfalls to Cult Recovery an article I chose to read on Cult Recovery 101 In this article I have read about how to recover after being involved in a cult.I have learned that in order to successfully leave a cult you have to go through certain steps. One main step is reframing from the beliefs or rather the myths that come after leaving a cult. These myths tend to delay the recovery process and make a person question themselves. The article has taught me that when it comes to cults the way they lure their prey is by vulnerability. A cult will seek out people who are hurt, sad, angry and they will use that to feed on that negativity until you begin to question your sanity alone. In the beginning of the article it states how the trauma endured from cult involvement can be resolved or rather they can be healed. Counseling and understanding their trauma may help in the road to recovery.Having someone whether it be a person they confide in a therapist, a pastor or their parents someone who can relate to them is another helpful step to recovery. One interesting fact that I have learned in this article was that the longest aspect to recovery is the search for love, belonging and care that they received while in the cult. Lastly this article has taught me that the first step is “ floating” which means understanding those triggers that bring out the cult mentality whether it be something visual like a type of color, a certain symbol, a hand gesture. A verbal trigger like a voice, a laugh or a song, certain smells, certain taste, anything that may cause a trigger is called floating. The idea is to discover the triggers and deal with them. After which is understanding the trauma that led to the entering of the cult and what trauma the cult has caused before leaving.
