The message/theme that beyonce expresses through her song and video is that she is not ashamed of who she is and where she comes from nor the color of her skin. Initially my reaction was her embracing and speaking out for women empowerment but Matsoukas way of helping her convey her message was deeper. The message Matsoukas helped her convey is that she is more than what other see her she is a strong, beautiful and black independent women and that slavery does not define her. She will not be victimized nor would she be broken. Her message spoke volumes in her song she used positive emotive language the way she spoke abou ther hair and what she offers. Evaluative language showing how important where she comes from and what made her who she is today is allowing others to believe in themselves and resonated with her message. In my opinion I feel the reason why this song as well as the video became so controversial is because black women today fight every day to prove there worth and who they are and that no matter what they are strong, capable and willing and that they are not alone.

Hello Natacha, I love how your perspective changed due to gaining a deeper understanding. I also did not know how strategic Melina Matsoukas was when she helped bring Beyonce’s vision to life. This gave me a better understanding of her message as well. I also appreciated how you highlighted the strength of black women. As a black woman it is often overlooked at how strong we must be with everything we endure from society.
