Dr. Richard Paul explained critical thinking as “The art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it.” The first speaker explained how we utilize our imagination to seek out connections when we think. This helps us understand how we and others see the world around us. He uses multiple analogies as well, comparing critical thinking to archeology, in that, we dig up the thought processes to unearth new discoveries. He also compares critical thinking to how art takes time and practice to strengthen the skill. The second Ted Talk speaks on how children desperately want to be involved in their learning, and how we should question what society deems right or wrong. This helps children gravitate away from the notion that there is “only one right answer.” He also touches on how to be adaptive and innovative to produce real problem-solving techniques. I agree that it is healthy to unlearn forced habits that prevent us from thinking deeply – While diving deeper into how our thinking strengthens our minds. Critical thinking also allows space for us to consider multiple perspectives rather than just our own. I feel that it would be extremely beneficial for the education system to promote critical thinking courses from early on, rather than only in college, so that children and teenagers can enhance these skills as they grow.
