Journal Entry (Optional)

The following journal entry prompts are suggestions. Professors may come up with different ones for their individual course sections.

Prompt 1

Watch the documentary/interview on Stan Brakhage or Robert Breer on Kanopy. After watching the film, summarize the approach of the artist you chose to the craft of filmmaking. Why do you think they were considered important in their time? How were they considered innovative?

Prompt 2

Review the trailer for “Fantastic Planet”. How would you describe the style of drawing and movement? Think of this film in the context of the other work we looked at this week, particularly the works aimed at a youth audience, like Ralph Bakshi’s work and “Yellow Submarine”.

The movie that I will be focusing on is: The Sea Beast (2022)

The animated film is about a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, turning his life upside down as they venture into uncharted waters. I am drawn to it because I enjoy the character design, the animation style used in the film, and the themes shown including the “humans are the real monsters” trope. I will be research the movie’s animation style and artwork, production, and if whether or not it was successful.

My long paper will consist of an animation film called Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. This film was released in Japan in the year 2013. This film was the first film to be a theatrical released in 17 years. Dragon Ball Z has a whole TV series franchise that I grew up watching since I was 7 years old  I have grown to love this film because of the character name Goku who is the earth hero saiyan and became the strongest saiyan in his kind. Goku has taught me valuable lessons that to never give up and always be strong and get stronger. I grew to love the film but I also loved the fighting scenes, the power beams, and the different races. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods I will be researching the making of this film, the story, animation techniques, and the color used, and I will analyze the film by comparing and contrasting previous TV series releases.

Atlas Rodriguez Week 11(long paper outline)

For this long paper, I will be using Spiderman: Into the spider-verse

This film is about an afro-Latino boy named Mile Morales, he is bit by a glitched radioactive spider, and when trying to figure out his new abilities he is met with other versions of spiderman from different universes. He and the rest of the spider people try to stop Kingpin from causing a catastrophe, while also trying to get the rest of the spider people back to their universe. This film is very interesting to me because of the different animation styles, and techniques used throughout the movie. It shows the struggle of how great expectations could affect someone’s actions and mindset, and this really speaks to me as someone who also deals with that personally.

During this long paper, I will focus on the types of animation techniques used, and what inspired them to create the film using those style types. How did they impact people after the film, and why was it such a success?

I will be using the readings from the lessons to compare the film and what animation techniques could have inspired the directors to add to the film.

The movie that I will be focusing on is: Inside Out.

This movie about the inner emotions that has been drawn inside of a young girl named Riley who moved from Minnesota to San Francisco with her parents. And also, there are five emotions that showcase their own personalities which is: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust.

I am drawn to this movie, because of its story and it discusses about the character’s struggle with the emotions and her new lifestyle changes.

I will be researching about the animation style, production style, box office, and cinematography style.

The movie I will be focusing on: WALL-E (2008)

WALL-E is a movie about a robot with the same name that has been cleaning the abandoned, polluted, and uninhabitable Earth for 700 years. WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class) is the last robot left on Earth. WALL-E comes across another robot named Eve, sent to scan the Earth for any evidence of life. WALL-E and Eve become friends and when Eve is taken away, WALL-E travels to space to rescue Eve.

I am drawn to this movie because of its story and also because it discusses important topics such as waste management, human environmental impact, human dependency on technology, and many more.

I will be researching the movie’s animation and drawing style, production, distribution, box office, and how it was received by the audience.

Jay Williams (LP Outline)

My show or ova is Fooly Cooly by Gainax from 2000. I’m drawn to it because I used to watch it at around age 6 or 7 on Adult swim ( it’s not that my parents weren’t watching me. I was allowed to watch it because I did not swear as a child) and was in awe of it all. I spent years after that listening to its iconic soundtrack, watching Animated music videos based on it, even tried to write similar stories. FLCL is to this day celebrated for its soundtrack, animation that was just phenomenal, and to a degree its story which has been analised over and over again. I want to cover its artwork, cult following, and soundtrack.
