Im, Parlakian & Sanchez (2007)
1.Summarize the main idea, key details, and what you learned from the reading in 4-6 sentences in your own words. Use key terms and vocabulary from the text. Both of these reading is giving us information about accepting other culture backgrounds, beliefs and traditions that families practice. Both of these readings explains how, before being able to accept others cultural backgrounds, we must first take a look into ourselves as teachers/caregivers and understand our own culture beliefs, values and traditions. After doing this we can then better understand and support families of different cultural backgrounds. In addition, we as teachers/caregivers must make an effort to learn other cultural backgrounds in order to support, appreciate and celebrate the culture of our children. Lastly, teacher/caregivers need to explore and to be open to accepting different ways of caring, solving problems and teaching for children, when this happens children and families feel welcome and better relationships are built with teachers/caregivers and families.
2.What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why? Before we as teachers can address the needs of every young children, we must first become more aware of our own cultural beliefs and practices” (Parlakian, 2007, pg8). I think this quote is important because we as individuals don’t do this enough. Looking into your own beliefs and values can help us accept and the values and beliefs of others.
3.How do these readings relate to your personal experience? These readings relate to my personal life because it’s ultimately how I would like to be treated as a parent. Having my children’s teachers and caregivers accept my family beliefs and values shows me they care and makes me feel like I can trust them. Also, coming up with ways to work through problems when I disagree with the way something is done is just as important to me, and my daughter’s teachers are good with asking me the right questions and accepting my ideas to solve problems concerning my child.
4.Why is self-knowledge (In, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Self-knowledge is important because it requires us to look in our own cultural roots to understand our own beliefs and practices and by taking a look at our own relationship’s experiences, we can recognize the influence that these factors have on our role as teachers and caregivers.
5.Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Culturally informed teaching is important because it gives us the information, we need to create a learning environment that welcomes children from diverse cultures. Culturally informed teaching strategies help us individualize learning experiences for each child and their needs.
6.Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? I think the most important question to ask is question number 8 – Have I attempted to fully understand the family’s rationale for its practices, the complexity of the issues, and other factors that contribute to the practices? I think this question allows teachers and caregivers to asset the situation before action upon, to really stop and take a look as to why these families have these practices.
7.Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? Reflective thinking is important because it allows individual with the opportunity to step back and think about how they will solve problems first. It also increasing self-awareness and promotes creative thinking. Teachers/Caregivers and families can come together and use reflective thinking to support children and their needs.
8.How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? After reading these articles I now have the understanding of why it’s important to learn other cultural backgrounds. Through self-reflection I can become more aware and understanding of other family’s beliefs, values and traditions. In addition, I also learned how to support families by asking the proper questions that make them feel welcome and to show that I am accepting and respecting their cultural backgrounds
9.Did you test your ability to access the movie Babies from BMCC’s library video database (Steps to Access the movie Babies Movie)? How did it work? Yes I have access
I agree Erica, as a parent myself as well, I would want to be cultural beliefs and views to be acknowledged and respected.
I agree how you feel that you would want to be treated that way as a parent because thats what would make you feel good about your culture.
Erica, I agree your your quote, I chose the same one. It is important to understand and be aware of other family’s background
Erica, I agree with your quote, it is best to accept our own beliefs be fore we are able to truly start to accept others.
Hey Erica, I agree with everything you said. I actually like the quote you picked too
Erica, I like the quote that you chose. I agree with what you said in your summery. Respecting other’s culture is very important. Us teachers should be open to other’s culture and specially the families and babies we work with.
Hey Erica, I like the quote you picked and I also like how much though and details you put into all of your answers.
Both articles discussed values, beliefs, and assumptions. Caregivers should recognize and acknowledge other point of views and coming to shared solutions. Interaction between teachers and colleagues are cultural exchanges. Cultural beliefs will reflect in the way we approach conflicts. Variations in caregivers styles are expected. Caregivers should be sensitive to other cultures. Ultimately do what’s best for the child.
What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why? “Of course, in a case of obvious harm to the child that fits the legal definition of child abuse, it is the caregiver’s responsibility to report to authorities.” page 33 Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri (2000). I always ask myself where do I draw the line of doing everything a parent wants me to do when caring for their children. Child abuse is something I don’t agree with and I appreciate that there are laws to protect against this regardless of cultural differences.
How do these readings relate to your personal experience? The readings relate to my own personal experience because I can see how sometimes conflict can arise when two people have different cultures. In my own culture not kissing elders on the cheek when you see them can be looked at as disrespect where as in other cultures they may look at that as too invasive.
Why is self-knowledge (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? So caregivers wont take their own personal views and put them on families who have different cultural views.
Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Learning about different cultures will hep caregivers with individualizing care for the specific families they will be dealing with.
Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? What are some creative resolutions that address both the parents’ concerns and my own? Can create solutions for both family and program to come to common ground, but ultimately the family has the last say so.
Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? It allows caregivers to have open communication and caregivers can give their insights to family.
How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? This reading will help me become a better infant teacher because I plan to take other families cultural differences into consideration. I plan to treat families based on their individual needs and not my own.
Did you test your ability to access the movie Babies from BMCC’s library video database (Steps to Access the movie Babies Movie)? How did it work? Yes. I can access library some days and some days it says my barcode is invalid. Strange.
Deborah, I found your quote to be very interesting. We have the same views about some of the questions
i agree with your quote no matter cultural differences child abuse it wrong ! right is right and wrong is wrong
Deb, open communication is important with families we work with in future. I like how to describes self-knowledge and why it is important. Recognizing our beliefs and putting them with other’s is the right thing to do!
Hi Deb, I like how you mentioned the importance of getting to know families in order to have a better understanding of their cultural backgrounds. I also think that quite important for us future educators.
1. Summarize- Both reading explains how caregivers should recognize and acknowledge different points of views. The readings also go into depth on understanding cultures and beliefs and acknowledging them. Everyone has a different cultural background and belief and this will also effect the way each person responds, approaches and understand a problem or situation.
2. Quotes- ” … We must first become aware of our own cultural beliefs and practices” (Parlakin 2007, pg.8) This quote was very interesting to me because a lot of people never really take the time to find themselves and their beliefs and what is important to them.
3.Personal Experience- The article relates to my personal experience because someone’s cultural background and upbringing can be very different from the next person’s. For example in my culture it is considered disrespectful to call your parent by name, and I have a friend who was raised calling her mother by her first name.
4. Self knowledge is important because it requires us to look deep within ourselves to understand and value or needs, beliefs and cultural background as well.
5. Culturally informed teaching is important because you are given and provided with much needed information and different cultures so you know how to properly teach a Child as well as to be able to not disrespect anyones cultural background or beliefs.
6. Have I attempted to fully understand the family’s rationale for its practices, the complexity of the issues, and other factors that contribute to the practices? This makes caregivers question if they are attempting to understand the family’s practices and putting themselves in the family’s shoes.
7. It allows caregivers the opportunity to be able to open up to the families and share their insights as well as create bonds
8. This reading will help me become a better Infant-toddler professional because I now understand the importance of the different cultural backgrounds and how important it is to have knowledge of it and be mindful of others.
I agree with what you said, by knowing our own culture we are able to understand other cultures that are different from ours.
Hey Aalyah, I like your responses. I agree with all of your responses and the way you responded to question number one, your summary is well explained.
Yes Deb, I agree with how these readings can help us take other families cultures into consideration and treat each family based on their individual needs.
Summarize the main idea, key details, and what you learned from the reading in 4-6 sentences in your own words. Use key terms and vocabulary from the text.
The articles are about the importance of culture accepting other people’s cultures is important because it’s important for teachers to adapt to the baby’s culture. Caregivers should be sensitive to other cultures.
What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why?
’’Talking with families about their cultural practices, traditions, and beliefs provides the message that they are valued’’(Sanchez, 2) . I love this quote because it really refers to how important culture is. It can change someone’s life and make them feel special about their culture and that they matter.
How do these readings relate to your personal experience? As a parent i would want my culture to be valued because it will help my kid understand how important i am as an individual and even if we may come from different cultures that it doesn’t matter.
Why is self-knowledge (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families?
Self knowledge is important because you learn about yourself and learn to value yourself and value other people’s culture.such as respecting other people’s culture.
Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? We get to learn about one another and learn different cultures and maybe we can learn something from another culture that we didn’t know is good to expand our knowledge of many different cultures.
Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? I think the most important questions would be #10 because it involves the parents so that they would have a say and they will feel that their say matters.
Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? Through reflective thinking I get to learn different cultures and values and to learn to accept different cultures and also know which questions to ask .
How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? This will help me to become a better professional because I understand the importance of culture and how much it means to the early childhood world to understand one another’s background.
Did you test your ability to access the movie Babies from BMCC’s library video database (Steps to Access the movie Babies Movie)? How did it work? I requested access
Hey Sarah, I like that you mention learning from our own cultures can help us learn from others cultures. Through our own childhood experiences we can learn to respect other families values and beliefs.
Agree! to become better infant-toddler professional we must learn about the different cultures and how we can work with their families.
Hey Sarah, I enjoyed your responses. I like the quote that you picked and I defiantly agree with your response. Respecting someones background shows respect and makes them feel welcomed and that they matter.
Hey Sarah Good Job!
Hey Sarah, I agree with you culture is so important and as a teacher if we acknowledge our family cultures that will make them feel special.
1. In the article Im, Parlakain-Sanchez (2007), talked about how our cultural beliefs and practices can influence how we would care the young children. Teachers must be willing to accept the cultures different from what they are used to and understand that every family has their way of raising their child. In the article Gonzalez Mena-Bhavnagri (2000), talked about how our cultural differences can affect how we react to certain situations that can happen in programs. Also, how we can learn to solve differences with techniques and to give the trust to the families to let us in on why they do things a certain way.
2. Some quotes that were meaningful can be seen in the first article Im, Parlakain-Sanchez (2007) on page 2 when it states, “Talking with families about their cultural practices, traditions, and beliefs provides the message that they are valued. However, just talking with families may not be enough. Teachers need to be open to and accepting of different ways of caring and teaching and thoughtfully explore the many ways to help children and families feel welcome.” This quote shows that teachers must accept differences and not be biased by what seems normal to them. In Gonzalez Mena-Bhavnagri (2000) a quote that struck out to me was when it states ” When sensitive caregivers meet individual needs, they also may be meeting cultural needs” shows the importance of meeting each child’s individual needs.
3. These readings relate to my personal experience in a way that I was not in daycare but I remember seeing these cultural differences when my mother babysit other families’ children. I remember that the children she took care of were playing and having fun but always left a mess. My mother would tell them to clean up their mess but they would look at my mom and then at each other and that is when my mother realize that probably their mother would clean up after them and sure enough their mother confirmed what my mother thought.
4. Self-knowledge is important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families because if we are not aware of our own beliefs we criticize the families and their beliefs. And once we understand our own beliefs we can learn to understand other families POV on what is their culture.
5. Culturally informed teaching is important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families because it helps the teachers to be able to handle situations where there is a cultural difference.
6. I believe all the questions are very important because each question affects the next question and all of them involve in the POV of the teacher and parent.
7. Reflective thinking is important for professionals working with infants and their families because it helps professionals think about their actions and how this can affect the children and this helps the professional to be able to work with children of different backgrounds.
8. Yes the movie works for me
Summarize the main idea, key details, and what you learned from the reading in 4-6 sentences in your own words. Use key terms and vocabulary from the text. The articles talk about how important it is to accept different cultures and for teachers to be able to learn and figure out these cultures for the young children, be more sensitive towards it and do what they can that best benefits the child.
What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why? “Talking with families about their cultural practices, traditions, and beliefs provides the message that they are valued.”(Parlakian & Sanchez) (page 2). I felt this was important because as a mother when I get to talk about my culture and beliefs, I actually start to feel more appreciated by the person i am talking to and is more understanding and interested in what I believe in. (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri) “She tells Akemi how clumsy and stupid her son is. She goes on to point out all the things he cannot do.” (Page 2) This quote really got to me because when i was a young girl my own mother and done the same thing to me, though she had never called me “stupid” I can tell by her facial expressions and whenever she would say “your so…” but would never finish. Though she still has her moments like that to this day, i believe that no matter what parents should build up their children not bring them down and if you feel like they can’t do something, tell them in a gentle soothing tone.
How do these readings relate to your personal experience? They relate to my personal experience because I can see when people of two different cultures will either get along and talk about their own beliefs and why they hold it dear to them or argue and fight on why their culture and beliefs are more important.
Why is self-knowledge (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? It helps us to better understand ourselves and value other people’s culture and beliefs.
Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? We get to learn more about each of our students culture and beliefs and learn from it and make sure that our students respect one another.
Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? I chose question #8 because its good to see if the family feels and knows that you have a better understanding of them so it would be easier to work with them when it comes to the child.
Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? Have a better understand of the children’s culture and beliefs and have a better understanding on how i can work with these children.
How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? Make sure i ask questions to the families on how they prefer their child to be taken care of at the children program and come up with ways to try to work with them.
Hi Tiana, I really liked the way you talked about reflective thinking and they way it helps us as educators. When we are able to have a deeper knowledge of the child, we are able to connect his behavior, his personality with his cultural background and this helps us understand him better, and then meet his needs in a better way.
1). Summarize the main idea, key details, and what you learned from the reading in 4-6 sentences in your own words. Use key terms and vocabulary from the text. The main idea of both articles is about accepting everyone’s culture and their backgrounds. Also they explain the importance of respecting everyone’s different point of views. We all have different beliefs and points of views and so it is very important to respect everyone especially as a caregiver.
2). What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why? The quote that was most meaningful to me was “ Teachers need to be open to and accepting of different ways of caring and teaching, and thoughtfully explore the many ways to help children and families feel welcome (page 2, Parlakian- Sanchez 2007).” This quote stood out to me because it is truly important to make parents feel as comfortable and as welcomed as possible. When working with different parents from different backgrounds we have to understand that they might each have different ways of preferences about watching their children, and so it is important as a teacher to have an open mind and respect everyone’s opinion.
3). How do these readings relate to your personal experience? These readings relate to my personal life because I myself come from another country and different culture, beliefs so when I went to school in this country my background was respected from my teachers and so when I have my own children in the future, I would want the teacher of my children to also respect my children’s background.
4). Why is self-knowledge (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Self knowledge is very important when working with infants, toddlers, and families because it explains our needs and where we come from it basically defines us.
5). Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Culturally informed teaching is important because it allows us as future educators the information we need to fully fulfill the child needs and make a better and more comfortable environment where children are free to learn and and questions as well as feel comfortable bringing up their point of views and growing together.
6). Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? I believe the most important questions to ask are number 8 and number 10 because it is very important to come to an agreement but also understand where the other person might be coming from with what they believe.
7). Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? Reflective thinking is important because it allows us to expect everyone’s different opinions and beliefs and have an open mind.
8). How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? This reading helps me become a better infant- toddler professional because it has taught me the importance of accepting everyone and ways to do so. Working with children and each of them having different opinions and cultural beliefs/ backgrounds it is very important for us to install what we have learned from these readings into our future careers.
9). Did you test your ability to access the movie Babies from BMCC’s library video database (Steps to Access the movie Babies Movie)? How did it work? I have requested access.
Hey Edisa, I liked your responses and I agree with you answer to number 7
1.Summarize the main idea, key details, and what you learned from the reading in 4-6 sentences in your own words. Use key terms and vocabulary from the text. In the reading “Im,Parlakian & Sanchez (2007) and Gonzalez-Mena &Bhavnagri (2000), they both spoke about accepting kids culture. Another thing both article spoke about is Self Knowledge which is when caregivers acknowledge the child and try to take their time to understand the child and the child’s culture. The article “Gonzalez-Mena& Bhavnagri (2000) spoke about When the caregiver meets child needs then they are also meeting the childs culture. It also spoke about responding to differences.
2.What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why? The quote that meant the most to me was the quote from the reading “Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri (2000) the quote said “When sensitive caregivers meet individual needs, they also may be meeting cultural needs”(P32). This quote meant the most to me because I feel like when you work in a child care center when you are meeting kids needs respectfully you are also meeting their culture needs.
3.How do these readings relate to your personal experience? Both readings can relate to my personal experience because growing up my teachers always treated me with respect.
4.Why is self-knowledge (In, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Self-knowledge is important for professionals working with infant, toddlers and families because it gives us a chance to understand a culture better and also give teachers ideas to be more diverse.
5.5.Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? Culturally teaching is important because it gives children the opportunity to be themselves and also an environment where children needs are met correctly.
6.Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? I think number 10 is most important to ask I say this because families will feel ore involved.
7.Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? Reflective thinking is important because it allows teacher to understand their own ideas and also understand the families idea.
8.How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? This will help me become a better infant-toddler professional because it gave me more ideas on what to do and how to also meet children needs
1. Summarize the main idea, key details, and what you learned from the reading in 4-6 sentences in your own words. Use key terms and vocabulary from the text. – Both the reading talks about different values, beliefs, and assumptions that people hold. Everyone has different thoughts of raising and teaching a child through their own values, beliefs and cultural practices, it tells a lot about one’s personality and their caregiving practices.
2. What quote(s) from the readings were meaningful for you? (identify the authors, year & page number) Why? – The quote that was most meaningful to me was from the reading by Im-Parlakian-Sanchez (2007). “Recognizing and acknowledging another person’s point of view and coming to a shared solution is critical in providing high-quality care to infants and toddlers”. When we individuals respect another individual’s opinion and support their view, children see that and learn from it. Making babies feel that respecting and being open to other’s thoughts is important, it helps them in learning the same and would thus make them do the same with others in future. There should never be a situation portrayed to a baby that two individuals are in doubt about their different view points and thus finding it hard to resolve an issue.
3. How do these readings relate to your personal experience? – These readings connect to my personal experience because I was always told to go by what was my cultural belief and my family’s. Even now, my family holds a different value and belief than other people but that never really impacted my upbringing and how my parents and teachers raised me. Yes, the teaching pattern for me was different than most students here in New York, but I never considered it to be a drop point and a disadvantage for me. I always considered myself as important and as grateful like other kids out there.
4. Why is self-knowledge (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? – Self- knowledge is important because it helps us think about what we have been taught about our own culture, beliefs and views. It is important to get to know more about ourselves and what we believe in as an individual.
5. Why is culturally informed teaching (Im, Parlakian, & Sanchez, 2007) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families? – Culturally informed teaching is important because it helps caregivers to think about one’s culture and work accordingly with the baby and their family, not going against the families belief, culture and the way the raise their baby.
6. Which of the questions is most important to ask when families and program staff disagree about a policy or practice (Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri, 2000)? Why? – Have I attempted to fully understand the family’s rationale for its practices, the complexity of the issues, and other factors that contribute to the practices?
7. Why is reflective thinking (Gonzalez-Bhavnagri, 2000) important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families from various cultural backgrounds? – Reflecting thinking is important because it helps them build a bond with one another. It also helps them reflect on the other’s viewpoint and discuss between one another what is best for the baby. It helps them with open discussions and make themselves comfortable with one another.
8. How will these readings help you become a better infant-toddler professional? – These readings will help me become a better professional as these readings taught me that it is okay to have different views, belief and assumptions about caregiving practices but what is important is coming to a shared solution and acknowledge and respect other’s cultural belief as well.
9. Did you test your ability to access the movie Babies from BMCC’s library video database (Steps to Access the movie Babies Movie)? How did it work? – I tried it, and it worked fine for me. Thank you!
-In the reading “Im,Parlakian & Sanchez (2007) and Gonzalez-Mena & Bhavnagri (2000) both articles speak about respecting and accepting a child’s culture and their background. Both articles also speak about the importance of the different point of views. It shows that everyone has different aspects and opinions and as a caregiver all of those should be respected.
-A quote that was meaningful to me was, “Talking with families about their cultural practices, traditions, and beliefs provides the message that they are valued. However, just talking with families may not be enough. Teachers need to be open to and accepting of different ways of caring and teaching and thoughtfully explore the many ways to help children and families feel welcome.” This quote was meaningful to me because it shows that as a caregiver they have to get used to things they aren’t usually used to. It’s important to take the time out to really get to know and understand each child and their families.
-These readings relate to my personal experience because when I was in elementary school my teacher used to have something called monday check ins. We would all sit around in a circle and we would have to say what we did over the weekend just so the teacher can see what we did and we can all communicate with each other in some sort of way.
-Self-knowledge is important for professionals working with infants, toddlers, and families because it defines us as an individual.
Culturally informed teaching is important because it allows children to feel as comfortable as possible and it also allows them to be themselves 100 percent of the time.
-I chose question #8. I feel like it’s the most important question to ask because it actually allows me to express if I am actually retaining any important information that is needed.
-Reflective thinking is important because it allows the individual to actually comprehend the information that was given to them. It also gives them a chance to think before they speak or actually do anything.
-This reading helps me become a better infant- toddler professional because it helped me realize that everyone is different in their own ways.
-I have requested access.
1. Summary: I believe that both readings focus on having a better understanding or a better perception of different cultures, beliefs and values It is essential to understand that every person comes from a different cultural background, have different ways to understand the world and this is the reason why people respond and face situations in a different way.
2.“a thorough understanding of one’s own cultural roots and group affiliations” (Haberman & Post 1998) from Im, Parlakian & Sanchez (2007) (P1) I like the way they have defined the concept of “self-knowledge” making a emphasis on the relevance on our cultural roots and our affiliations within our group.
3. These readings relate to my personal experience as when I have babysitted for families that their culture is way different from mine. I have asked children to clean up after them and I have dealt with reactions from the children and also the same parents where they stare at me clueless. They expect somebody else to o that job for them. After adressing the sitation in a chat with the parents they have told me straight forward that if I am present I’m supposed to always clean after the kids play. and when its not me, then the parents would have to it.
