A Case of Disengagement

  • What do you think is the most demotivating part of Harper’s job?
  • If you were an HR manager meeting with Harper’s supervisor, David, what advice would you give to help them re-engage Harper?
  • What would be the downside of losing Harper as an employee?

After reviewing Harper’s situation, it seems warranted why she would feel as such. The workload that she was familiar with has been altered in such an immediate or unexpected fashion that she hasn’t fully adjusted/adapted. Not to mention that Jose’s presence doesn’t seem replaceable by David in any possibility.

Personally, if I was placed within a HR Manager position I would certainly desire to account for Harper’s difficulties adjusting; though I would have to keep in mind that David still has his set responsibilities (as well as managing a greater amount of individuals compared to Jose). I would likely seek that other employees under David could help out somewhat with Harper’s workload, if the option of hiring another person onto the staff is thrown out the window. It would be a major risk to lose Harper as an employee, seeing as there would be a larger amount of work that would have to be directed at other employees. This in turn could result in other employees deciding to leave said company due to the overabundance of work assigned onto their plate.

Week E: The Founder

  1. What makes Ray Kroc and the brothers different from each other?
  2. Do you think the McDonald’s brothers did the right thing by selling out to Ray Kroc? Did Ray Kroc give the brothers a good deal?
  3. How did the local store franchisees make money?
  4. How did Kroc make money? How was that different than the franchisees, running the local stores?
  5. Does this film change your view of McDonald’s?

A1. In terms of differences, Ray Kroc tends to give off a bitter, aggressive (for lack of a better term) than the McDonald brothers. Ray had a mind built for business, while the McDonald brothers were more so ethical in a sense.

A2. Somewhat. Considering that they were quickly put out of business and didn’t receive royalties (which the royalty amount should have been better negotiated as well) though the profit a standard restaurant can make over a year, especially at that time considering all deductions and costs, it was a semi good deal in the moment. Though looking back, that’s another story.

A3. Usually through the royalties earned from establishments

A4: After getting the loan for construction and saving money, He began to buy and build restaurants. When building/managing establishments, He often focused on the land aspect-in which would bring in profit via financing.

A5: It doesn’t exactly change my perception on the corporation itself, but rather gives more hindsight as to their background; which is certainly fascinating.

Ethics and Social Responsibility

The company I selected in which I interact with on a frequent basis would be Ebay. Ebay is known as one of the top selling retailer sites/companies within the world. It is a public corporation, and overall has had its fair share of ethical and non ethical moments, in which we will explore throughout this paper.

To kick things off, Ebay has been proven to be a platform that encourages purchasing from sellers who are associated with charity. In a simple search through their seller’s products, it will be noticeable that sellers (who choose to donate all or give a dividend) to charity will have a special indicator with information of said specific charity. An article posted to Ebay’s forum section declared them as one of the worlds most ethical companies, which would also add to their resume and award column. This would rule in the favor of Ebay being viewed as quite ethical when it comes to supporting such organizations that presumably set out to provide care in some way, shape, or form.

In terms of negatives, there isn’t much information to be dug up within politics. However in the recent years of Ebay’s operation, there have been various scamming’s that have occurred. Some of these scamming’s (which also bring into question paypal, usps but start with Ebay qualification overall) were either not addressed by Ebay to the best of their ability or were disregarded until a community of press/individuals released complaints into the media. Since then, Ebay has claimed to have innovated methods of verification and authentication, though time will tell.

To conclude this paper, Ebay has somewhat of a balance within its ethical behavior, though the social responsibility scale tends to lean more towards being supportive in Ebays case.
