In Unit 13: Motivating Employees we will explore the psychology behind human behavior and motivation. We will identify the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and discuss the positives and limitations of each.
We will dig into what motivates employees to act ethically, to remain loyal to an organization, and to stay interested in their work. We will review the theories of motivation proposed by renowned psychologists such as Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the Hawthorne effect, the ERG theory, and other need-based theories of motivation to ultimately understand how organizations can work to motivate their most important asset: their people!
By the end of this unit, you should be able to:
- Be able identify the difference between direct and indirect turnover costs
- Describe some of the reasons why employees leave
- Explain the components of a retention plan
- Be able to discuss some of the theories on job satisfaction and dissatisfaction
- Understand how to motivate employees beyond direct compensation
