The movie that I will be focusing on is: The Sea Beast (2022)

The animated film is about a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, turning his life upside down as they venture into uncharted waters. I am drawn to it because I enjoy the character design, the animation style used in the film, and the themes shown including the “humans are the real monsters” trope. I will be research the movie’s animation style and artwork, production, and if whether or not it was successful.

Prompt 1:

Some examples of product placement in animation productions today are in animated films such as Zootopia(2016), and Ralph Breaks The Internet (2018), both had references to popular brands and companies in order to promote them beneficially. Other examples of this can be seen in animated tv shows such as American Dad and Rick and Morty.

The animation “Rooty toot toot” uses a very simple color palette and simple drawings. Throughout the short, you see that the animation goes along with the music. The patterns shown in the background to give off various textures had a very abstract look to them. What I liked about this film was how colors and abstract patterns were used to portray specific emotions and gives a personality to the characters.

Prompt 2:

By giving the characters silly voices, and movements, Private Snafu conveys his message through humor, while also educating the troops about the consequences of not following orders.

Seeing Mel Blanc voice the main character gave them a familiarity with him as he is known for voicing many funny cartoon characters, giving them a sense that it was the typical Warner Bros. cartoon, but more educational.

The movie I will be focusing on is: The Silly Symphony Series

I chose this because I have been a fan of this series ever since I was little as the Three Little Pigs short film was one of my favorites growing up. I enjoy most of these shorts for their aesthetics and techniques. It also shows similarities to other cartoons that I have watched as a kid including various cartoons owned by Warner Bros.

The elements I will be focusing on are the process of creating the films, the impact they had on the animation industry and the world, as well as going more into depth about the animation style and analyzing each film.

Tyla Baxter W3 – Prompt 1

After watching McCay’s “Gertie the Dinosaur” and Cohl’s Fantasmagorie, I’ve noticed that they are both black and white silent animated shorts. A few differences I took note of is that Cohl’s Fantasmagorie seems to have a constant flow of movement with no pauses whatsoever. However, “Gertie the Dinosaur”, is more slow-paced and is focused more on the character interacting with the artist. You can see this concept a lot in earlier animation as well as referenced in today’s animation.

Prompt 3

If I were to watch one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797, I feel that I would be absolutely amazed when seeing the ghosts appear. I normally feel a little anxious when it comes to ghosts but I have always been fascinated by visual effects used in shows and rides. In modern times, I usually feel the same way when it comes to amusement park attractions, specifically haunted houses. An example of this could be The Haunted Mansion at Disney World because it uses similar effects to portray the visual of ghosts but in a way that is more technologically advanced.

Tyla Baxter – Week 1

One of my favorite animated films that I like is Suits animated by Aupa Studio and directed by Carlos Baena. It was released in 2019 as a part of Love Death + Robot’s first volume on Netflix. I feel like the reason why I love this short film is that through such a short period of time we get a glimpse of each character’s personality and background. Watching it for the first time, you can tell that they took their time giving as much detail to the characters as possible. Another thing that I liked is that you can see that some scenes have different frame rates.
