Community Project
I was a volunteer for Soundview Park in the South Bronx, in partnership with New York Cares and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to beautify, groom and take care of the community park. There were three volunteer members besides myself and our team leader, Maisie, doing this project. Our job was to take out the weeds and remove foreign plants from the garden area of the park by the entrance. Maisie has been working to keep the garden area at the park in good condition and as well as a load of other places as well. As a volunteer, I learned that by serving the community, meeting the people and learning about the people there is important. Serving others is great but in this experience I met people as I worked and talked to people who lived in the area.

Learnig 4 – To learn about their lives and the things that effect them and the environmental aspect that can help them was crucial to this experience. Although I was only taking weeds out, replanting plants, removing plants that were not native to the area, and talking to others, I was also understanding the social impact and importance that an environment creates for a community not necessarily the optics but the impact on the people and how sometimes places like this can taken for granted.
