Discussion Board 3.1 Mackenzie Santiago

  1. I understand ideology as a structured system of ideas, beliefs, values and assumptions through which people interpret the world. It is not just a set of political opinions it is a deeper understanding that shapes how we see reality, what we view as “normal” what we believe is fair or just how society should be organized. Ideology works it’s magic it’s not always noticed but it does influence how we interpret events, institutions or people. For example the idea of the “American Dream” reflects an ideology that emphasizes individual effort and hard work. Within this framework success is often understood as the result of a personal task while failure may be seen as an individual shortcoming. I also understand ideology as something that feels natural to those who hold onto it. People assume their beliefs are simply common sense when ideology is powerful and it shapes not only political views but defines freedom, family, success, gender roles, success and happiness.
  2. In U.S. politics, conservative and liberal ideologies represent two broad ideas but different ways of understanding government, society or individual rights. Conservative ideology’s generally emphasize the ideas of individual responsibility, limited government, free markets, traditional values and law and order. Compared to Liberals they believe in social equality, government intervention to promote fairness, civil rights, social justice and protection of marginalized groups. The dividing line often centers on the role of government, Conservatives tend to see government as something that should be limited because too much intervention threatens economic growth/individual freedom while Liberals tend to see government as a necessary tool to correct inequality and protect populations. An example is healthcare policies, Conservatives often support market-based solutions and argue that competition improves efficiency and protects freedom of choice, While liberals are more likely to support government-funded health care programs and healthcare is a right and the government ensure equal access to all.

Some Key Concepts:

  • Freedom(Conservative view): Often means freedom from government interference.
  • Freedom(Liberal View): Means the ability to live fully and eqully which requires government support.
  • Equality: Liberals often stress equality of outcome and opportunity while conservatives often stress equality.
  • Tradition: Conservatives tend to value established institutions or practices while liberals are more open to social change.

3. The Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser offers a more structural and theoretical understanding of ideology. Althusser argues that ideology is not just a set of ideas in our brain it’s a system of representations and practices that shape how individuals relate to the social world. He described ideology as representing the imaginary does not necessarily describe the reality correctly instead it shapes how we all perceive things differently. He argues that ideology works through schools, churches, Media and family. For example in school students are taught not only math or history but also punctuality, obedience to authority and respect of rules. These lessons prepare individuals to function in society. Overall, I understand ideology as a deep framework of beliefs that shape how we manage and interpret the world we live in.

keilany rivera- ideology

1. To start off, I personally think ideology is basically a set of beliefs and values that can shape how people think society should work and what role the government should play, but it also can help people decide what policies they support in order to understand political issues , for example someone who values freedom may support limited government while those who value equality may support more government involvement to help others.

2. I think the main difference between conservatives and liberals is how they individually view the government. For example, the conservatives believe liberty is the most important political value while the liberals believe the government should be the kne to play a big and active role in society basically how they emphasize equality and support government actions more Such as like regulations and social programs in order to soft, social and economic problems.

3. From what I was able to understand Althusser argues that he thinks audiology shapes how people see the world without them, always realizing it, and that could usually be passed on through intuitions like schools, family, and media for example, examples schools usually teach not only academics boss behaviors like following rules and the importance of respecting authority and that I think is what helps society values.

Brittney Coard – Understanding Ideology

1) My definition of ideology are the structures of reasoning and faith that people use to understand the world. It affects the way we see what is “normal,” “right,” and perfect for society.Ideology also impacts the way we speak on situations like unemployment, inequalities, and crime as well as how we judge the choices of others.

2)Regarding the role of government and what makes an equal society, right and liberal ideologies in the USA differ most. Liberals put more value on justice, fair opportunity, and the idea that the state can help in fixing social issues, but the Republicans typically stress freedom of choice, smaller government, and personal accountability.

3 ) According to my understanding of Althusser, ideology is a system that affects the way people view themselves and their place in society, rather than a set of personal opinions. For making specific standards, rules, and needs look normal and natural, ideology lets people function without constant questioning.

By teaching people how to conduct themselves as employees, students, or citizens by everyday settings like the media and schools, ideology “accepts” people into society, as an example students have the ability to to adapt into adulthood and employment by learning in school, for such as to respect authority, follow rules, and get good grades.

1. Ideology is a set of ideas and beliefs about society, politics, and how things should work. It shapes how we see the world and how we judge what is right or wrong, and fair or unfair. It also influences our opinions about government, laws, schools, the economy, and social issues. Ideology also affects how we think about our identity and our role in society. It’s something we learn from family, school, media, and culture. We grow up learning certain values like obedience, competition, or equality. It shapes how we think without us always noticing it. One example of ideology is how people think about success and money. Some people believe that anyone who works hard will become successful and rich. This belief can be part of an ideology that supports the idea that the system is fair. However, others may believe that the system gives more opportunities to some groups than others, and that success is not only about hard work, but also depends on social and economic conditions. These different beliefs demonstrate different ideologies about society and the opportunities available.

2. The difference between conservative and liberal ideology in U.S. politics is about how they see the role of government. Conservatives usually believe the government should be small and that individuals and businesses should have more freedom to make their own decisions. They trust personal responsibility more, and they prefer lower taxes and fewer rules on businesses. On the other hand, Liberals believe the government should play a bigger role in helping people and fixing social and economic problems. They focus more on equality and support programs that help lower-income groups and protect the environment and workers. For example, in healthcare, a conservative may prefer private healthcare based on the market, while a liberal may support government healthcare programs so everyone can afford treatment. For example, in education, conservatives may support more private schools and freedom of school choice, saying that competition improves quality. While liberals may support more public school funding and equal opportunities in education, arguing that education should be supported by the government so that everyone has the same opportunity.

3. Althusser describes ideology as a system that shapes how people think and act so that society continues in the same way. It encourages people to accept rules, authority, and their position in society as normal and natural. He says society controls behavior in two main ways. One is through force, such as police, courts, and prisons, which he calls the repressive state apparatus. The other is more subtle and works through everyday institutions like schools, media, and family, which he calls ideological state apparatuses. These usually do not use violence but instead teach habits like discipline and respect for authority. For example, in school, we learn subjects like math and reading, but we also learn to follow schedules, listen to authority, ask permission to speak, and accept being evaluated. This is ideological training, not just academic learning. It prepares people to fit into the system and not question it much. In this way, ideology works quietly in daily life and makes the system seem normal and natural, even if it is unfair.

Jonathan Kennedy – Understanding Ideology

  1. An ideology helps shape a person’s worldview, or what they think society should be like, by providing a system of beliefs and values. It affects a person’s perception of a society’s governance, structure, and organization, and also how people think about other issues, such as how people should be free and treated equally, often without people realizing it. For example, think about the differences between liberals and conservatives regarding ideology and the role of government. Conservatives believe that a smaller government will protect individual liberty. On the other hand, liberals would believe that a more active and aggressive government is needed to promote equality and keep the people from harm. I believe that the best way to describe ideology is that it is a framework that guides how people interpret social issues and make their political decisions. I believe this is partly learned from the family, partly from education norms, and partly from the media, and it is hard to recognize this system of principles as values that should be used, so it is often taken for granted.
  2. I recognize the difference between conservative and liberal ideology mainly in the forms of liberty versus equality, as well as the extent of governmental power. Conservatism embraces limited governmental interference, personal accountability, and individual autonomy, especially in economic matters. On the other hand, liberals advocate for social and economic intervention to enhance equality as well as protect people from social and economic challenges. A good example of this is the healthcare system. Generally, conservatives embrace the free-market system in which individuals have the liberty to make their own choices concerning their healthcare. On the other hand, liberals are in favor of government intervention in order to ensure healthcare access for all, which may require more control and increased taxation. This example is indicative of the conservative emphasis on liberty and the liberal focus on equality.
  3. Althusser defines ideology as the set of beliefs and ideas that shape a person’s conception of themselves and the world, originating not from individual choice but from the surrounding society. These beliefs seem self-evident, and as though they originate from nature, but are in fact constructed by social institutions, which can be identified as schools, the media, religion, and the family. Thus, ideology helps people to accept and reproduce the existing order of society, through the stifling of true social thought and social action, believing that their ideas and actions are free, when in fact they are the product of social conditioning and social control. One of the clearest illustrations of this in schools is patriotism. Students in primary and secondary school learn to stand up for the national anthem and venerate their country as if it were the best, learn to verbalize pride for their country, and learn narratives about national heroes. All of this teaches them a great deal more than just historical facts. It teaches them to think about themselves and the society in which they live as loyal, and thus “normal”, members of the state. By doing this, social institutions introduce and perpetuate an ideology that normalizes obedience to the state and the acceptance of the relative status quo.

Diamond Broadhead Discussion 3.1

  1. Ideology is a set of beliefs and ideas that shape how people see the world and how society should function. It influences a person’s beliefs with how people think about things like politics, social norms and justice. Ideology operates on our daily life even when we are not aware influencing our opinions, reactions and behaviors. For example, the belief that Schools provide equal opportunities for all students is part of common ideology and beliefs in certain people in the United States. This idea supports the belief that students who are academically successful are so because they worked hard while those who struggle are doing so due to the lack of effort. Overall, from all the information I gathered from watching the videos in reading the passages I understand that ideology is something that is learning through institutions comic from an early age that effect your daily life like family, school, religion, social media, and even the government.

2. The main difference between conservative and liberal ideology In US politics is mainly how much government involvement they think is necessary. Liberals usually support the government be more active in today’s society, and wanting more support in social and economic and inequalities which can be things like healthcare, school systems and racial discrimination, while conservatives Tend to believe in less government interaction. An example of this can be seen in the healthcare system. Liberals tend to support and want more government involvement regarding things like insurance and medical care while, conservatives argued that healthcare should be handled more by private companies and too much involvement can lead to hire a cost. This example shows how ideologies influence personal views with how they grew up in their society.

3. Althusser believes ideology is how people are taught to see the world and understand their place in it. Instead of it be something we chose to believe is more of the experience we go through and the institutions we interact with everyday like schools, families, hospitals, and the media. These institution’s shaped how we think without even noticing it for example political messages often encourages people to believe that voting is one of the main ways we can create change in today’s society, This idea can make people feel like they’ve done their part even when there are deeper social economic problems still remaining . This shows a clear example of how a political system shapes how people understand their roles as citizens and how added ideology works in everyday life.

Chelsea Ferreiras-Ideology in politics

  1. Ideology is a set of beliefs about how the government and society should work.It shapes how people think about rules, freedom and what is fair. These beliefs influence what people think the government should do and how people should behave. Most people pick up their Ideology from their family, school, and the media without even realizing it. An example of Ideology is how people feel about the government’s help. Some people think the government should help others by offering assistance with healthcare or helping people who are poor. Other people think the government should stay small and that people should take care of themselves. These different opinions come from different Ideologies. I think Ideology is something that shapes a lot of decisions in the American government. It helps explain why people support different political parties and different laws. Ideology also affects how people vote and how they talk about political issues. When we understand Ideology, it’s easier to see why people disagree, and it helps us think more about our own beliefs too.
  2. Liberals think the government should solve the problems. They support programs that help people, like help for families who really need it. They also support more rules for big businesses and higher taxes for rich people and big companies. While conservatives think the government should stay smaller. They believe too much government can take away freedom. They support lower taxes, fewer rules for businesses, and a free market. They also support a strong military and traditional values. Overall Liberals believe the government should do more to help people, and conservatives believe the government should do less and let people handle things on their own.
  3. Althusser’s explains Ideology as the way society teaches people how to think and act, without them always realizing it. He believes Ideology is not just ideas in our heads but something we live through everyday. It shows up in different things like school, religion, the media and even family life. A example is school, in school students learn things like showing up on time, following rules, and listening to authority. This in a way prepares people for the real world and also future jobs, where they are expected to follow certain rules. School is one way Ideology teaches people how to fit into society.

Ideology-Kayla Chisholm

1. Ideology is a set of beliefs and values that shape how people understand the world and how society should work. It affects how we think when it comes to the government, money, laws, and social problems. Majority of the time we don’t notice our ideology because it feels like “common sense,” but it influences our opinions about what is fair, what freedom means, and who deserves help. For example, two people can look at poverty and explain it in totally different ways. A person with a conservative ideology might say poor people just need to work harder, depend on themselves and just stop laying around. A person with a liberal ideology would say poverty happens because wages are too low and opportunities are unequal. Given here situation is the same, but ideology changes how each person explains it. I understand ideology as something we learn from school, family, social media, and the news. It teaches us what to see as normal and what to see as wrong. Ideology is not neutral, it usually supports certain groups more than others. Ideology has real power in shaping how society is organized and who benefits from it.

    2. The main difference between conservatives and liberals in U.S. politics is how they view government and equality. Conservatives believe the most important value is individual liberty. Which means they think that the government should be small and that people should rely on themselves instead of government programs. Liberals believe that equality and fairness are more important and that government should be active in helping people and fixing social problems. Conservatives focus on ideas such as property rights, and free markets. The reading says conservatives believe poor people are often poor because they are lazy or make bad choices, not because the economic system is actually unfair. Liberals focus more on things such as education, the environment and protecting workers. They support things like minimum wage laws, health care programs, and unemployment assistance. An example could be health care. A conservative would argue that private companies should run health care and that government involvement limits freedom. A liberal would argue that the government should guarantee health care because everyone deserves equal access. This is an example of diving line, showing that conservatives prioritize freedom from government and liberals prioritize equality and protection for ordinary people.

    3. Althusser defines ideology as the way society shapes people’s thinking so they accept the system they live in. He believes ideology is not just ideas in our heads, it spreads through schools, social media, religions, etc. These institutions teach us how to act and what to believe without us even realizing it. In my own words, Althusser is saying ideology makes the existing social order feel “natural”. People follow the rules given and accept inequality because they have been taught that this is just how life is supposed to be. We rarely question it because ideology is everywhere around us. For example, in school students are taught to follow the rules, complete work for grades, and be prepare for future jobs. This trains young people to fit into the workplace and accept bosses and hierarchies. Althusser would say this shows how ideology trains people to fit into society without challenging how it works.

Stephanie Cesar – Thinking About Ideology

    1. Ideology is an individuals inner beliefs. It delves into ones morals, what they believe is right or wrong. Shaping how people interact with and think of society and the government. It’s subjective, as it differs from person to person. But, ideologies can be shared. Everyone has their individual reasons for aligning under an ideology. Political socialization is the way people develop their own ideologies, the main factors in this being family, social groups and economic standing. An example of an ideology would be conservatism. Conservatives stand for a government that isn’t too hands on with their people because it allows them freedom. They value keeping the church intertwined with the state, a ‘traditional’ family, free markets and a strong military. Since conservatives place heavy emphasis on family, someone is prone to align under this ideology if their parents are conservative.

      2. Conservative and liberal ideology have major differences in US politics. Conservatives value freedom, a restricted government, and tradition. Liberals value equality, government involvement and social progression. A key difference would be their stances on government involvement. Conservatives strive for a government that has limited engagement with their people. Since there’s less involvement, people wouldn’t have to pay as many taxes because government funded programs wouldn’t exist. On the other hand, liberals believe that government involvement is a necessity. To liberals, government involvement would make sure social programs like retirement funds, public education and Medicare are able to exist, and help the lives of many different people.

      3. Althusser sees ideology as something that is taught to better benefit a capitalist society, not the people. Ideology is something that gets people to act against their best interests. He believes that ideology isn’t something that people are born with, that instead, it’s a kind of conditioning people go through. Althusser describes two apparatus that enforces these conditions so people can better serve a capitalist society, repressive and ideological apparatus. The repressive apparatus is the threat of jail time for falling out of line. While ideological apparatus serves as the main motivator behind Althusser’s theory. It includes schools, politics and mass media as a means of control. For an example, the way school and the education system is set up. In school, discipline is taught. It teaches people to be obedient. If you show up late, skip a class, or go against a school schedule, you get presented with detention or you’re seen as a delinquent. This ties into Althusser’s belief, that if you don’t fall into the order that was made up, you’ll be punished.

Shanveer Singh – Discussion Board 3.1

      1. a) In my own words, ideology is a system of beliefs and values that one goes by and uses them as a moral code on how to go on in their lives. It’s how we look at the world and think about which political sides, social groups, religious, groups we resonate with and belong to as well. Our ideology is usually what we think is best and the “right” way to go about things. Now whether or not it is truly right depends on who you are asking. I see ideology like the camera someone will process things through. b) an example of this would be Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait, to his best knowledge (his ideology) he had invaded Kuwait to keep and preserve the honor of Iraq. He did not see the fact that it might have been offensive to the western world he acted on his impulse which was to defend the honor of his country. By doing so he acted on his ideology and his belief of Iraqi nationalism. Or another example that’s more basic is the idea of the American dream which we think with effort and hard work, any one who comes here will prosper. c) Ideology further extends to how we approach the idea of authority and freedom. In this case of the video we watched, it’s the idea of not acting in your own best interest because there is something else beyond it that is stopping you from doing so. Though I do believe someone’s best interest thru their ideology may not always be the most beneficial for society therefore we need aspect like repressive state apparatus.
      2. American politics though Washington never intended this to be our politics, we do have two divided parties. The democrats and the republicans, in other words Liberals and Conservatives. Conservatives tend to think about religion a lot, and tradition as well. They follow their Christian beliefs and if they honestly could, they would reduce the idea of separation of church and state. They believe in a limited government, where everything is free market and whoever can leap either can leap further. They don’t like regulations since it takes away their freedoms according to them. They also like the idea of individuality, they focus that one is responsible for their well being. Now liberals on the other hand, like reforms and change, things like equality, fixing injustices. They like active governments that intervene and regulate everything as well. High taxes but also things like free healthcare come with the same taxes. Simply put the idea of the divided line is that conservatives are pushing traditional ways while the liberals try to push for reform
