I first watched Moonlight when it came out, and a lot of people were talking about it. The movie is famous for showing a story about growing up and figuring out who you are, especially when it comes to your identity, like your sexuality and how that fits with being a guy. It left a strong impression on me when I was a teenager. In the movie, Moonlight is like a symbol for your deepest self, where you discover who you really are and what you really want, especially when everything is quiet under the magical blue moonlight.
In Moonlight, there’s a tough choice for the main character, Chiron, about his feelings and who he is. When his friend Kevin asks him to go to a private place on the beach, it makes things really complicated. Chiron must decide if he should do what people expect or if he should be true to himself.
Now, considering the 7 moral positions outlined by Chaffee:
1. Moral Relativism – Views might vary based on cultural or personal perspectives.
2. Utilitarianism – Weighing the happiness or well-being of Chiron against societal norms.
3. Kantianism – Emphasizing duty and universal principles, possibly advocating for authenticity.
4. Social Contract Theory – Balancing personal desires with societal expectations for harmony.
5. Rights Ethics – Focusing on Chiron’s right to pursue his own happiness.
6. Care Ethics – Considering the impact of Chiron’s choices on himself and those around him.
7. Divine Command Theory – Interpreting based on religious beliefs
In this scenario, my decision would align more with moral relativism, acknowledging the diversity of perspectives on sexual identity. Chiron should have the freedom to explore his feelings without rigid societal expectations.
My decision is based on the moral value of individual autonomy and the principle that individuals have the right to define their own identity, which aligns with moral relativism.
Reflecting on my own moral compass, I recognize the importance of respecting individual autonomy and embracing diversity in personal choices. This aligns with a perspective that values understanding and empathy when faced with complex moral dilemmas.

Coincidentally, we chose the same movie to response to, and our thoughts coincide in that we both advocate for empathy, understanding, and authenticity when dealing with moral dilemmas.
