Summary

The message Beyonce is trying to convey in her song, is women empowerment, specifically in Black women. This song talks about black women being differently in their own ways, but are still powerful and special. she shows how hard work does indeed pay off. she also shows a form of women being Dominant, like how she talks about taking men out to eat. She points out how her power can give others power as well, like when she says, "I might get your song played on the radio station." The message in the song can be similar to my initial reaction because I know this sing prior to this assignment, and analyzed the lyrics while learning the song. Matsoukas helped Beyonce create these messages visually, by making the environment in the music video during the time period black women weren't appreciated enough, the environment shows the suburbs, also by the choreography in the video being mostly African American. An example of an emotive language in the song is when Beyonce says "I like my baby heir with baby hair and afros." This plays a big role in the song because it shows how African Americans can look however, and should still be loved regardless. An example of a rhetorical device, (hyperbole) is when she says, "I got a hot sauce in my bag". This is a hyperbole because obviously she didn't have a hot sauce in her bag, lol. But, this also plays a big role because it was kind of used as a "inside joke" within the black community because prior to this line, she says "but they never take the country out me." This song might have became controversial because this song portrays "anti-police" as well as "Black lives matter" , which is not something that people agree with, specifically white people.
