Speech

OER @ BMCC & CUNY

  • Speech Analysis Paper Assignment
This assignment was created by Nancy Bandiera at La Guardia Community College. It “was used in a Public Speaking course where students learned to build a variety of public speeches. The assignment aims to enable students to make connections to experience, to reflect and self-asses their learning. In line with the integrative learning core competency, they are also encouraged to make connections between and among academic disciplines.”
  • Start Here, Speak Anywhere! Empowering Our Voices for a Global Audience
“This book was written by several faculty members, including a librarian, at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) with a purpose of ‘advancing equity and the intellectual and personal growth of students’ and strengthening ‘a culture of care inside and outside the classroom.’ (Mission Statement of BMCC)”

Open Books

  • Exploring Public Speaking: 4th Edition
“We believe this text addresses all the subjects that traditional publishers’ books would address in an appropriate writing style and with appropriate college-level learning theory in mind. The appendices address some additional topics that might be excluded from most texts, but that we believe add to the experience: learning theory, plagiarism, speaking online, speaking to diverse audiences, and humor in public speaking. In the third and fourth editions we have added ‘case study’ examples and some different outline samples.” Note that this edition “includes a set of test banks which are not available to the public. For access to these resources, please contact Dr. Barbara Tucker at btucker@daltonstate.edu.”
  • Speak Out, Call In: Public Speaking as Advocacy
This “interdisciplinary public speaking textbook […] fuses rhetoric, critical/cultural studies, and performance to offer an up-to-date resource for students. With a focus on advocacy, this textbook invites students to consider public speaking as a political, purposeful form of information-sharing.”
  • Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking
This textbook from University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing “features two key themes. First it focuses on helping students become more seasoned and polished public speakers, and second is its emphasis on ethics in communication.”
