Stephen Exantus Repressive State Apparatus

1. A Repressive State Apparatus is something like the police, military, or courts that use force or the threat of force to make people follow the rules. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it can control people through punishment or fear. For example, if someone breaks the law, the police can arrest them.

2. Ideological State Apparatuses are things like schools, churches, families, and the media that teach people certain beliefs and behaviors. They work more by influencing how people think instead of using force. For example, school teaches students what is considered normal and how they should act in society.

3. The main difference is that Repressive State Apparatuses use force or punishment, while Ideological State Apparatuses influence people through ideas and beliefs. One controls more directly, while the other works more through what people learn and believe.

4. An example of ideology would be a church teaching people what is right and wrong. This would be an Ideological State Apparatus because it influences how people think and behave through beliefs instead of using force.

Ideology 3.2

1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”?

A Repressive State Apparatus is basically the part of the government or state that uses force or the threat of force to make people follow the rules. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it can use punishment or physical force when people do not follow the laws. Some examples would be the police, courts, prisons, and the military.

2. What are Ideological State Apparatuses? How do they seem to work?

Ideological State Apparatuses are different because they usually don’t use physical force to make people follow rules. Instead, they influence people through ideas, beliefs, values, and social expectations. Althusser includes institutions such as schools, families, religion, the media, and other organizations that help teach people how they are expected to behave in society.

3. How are Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different?

The main difference is how they get people to follow the rules. Repressive State Apparatuses rely mainly on force, punishment, or the threat of force, while Ideological State Apparatuses work mainly through ideas, beliefs, values, and socialization.

For example, the police are a Repressive State Apparatus because they can arrest someone if they break the law. The person follows the law partly because they know there can be consequences if they don’t. A school is an example of an Ideological State Apparatus because it teaches students certain behaviors and values. Students usually follow school rules because they have learned that those rules are normal and expected, rather than because someone is physically forcing them to follow every rule.

Another way I would remember the difference for the exam is: Repressive = force or punishment. Ideological = ideas and beliefs. They can also work together. For example, schools can teach people to follow laws and respect authority, while the police can enforce those laws when someone refuses to follow them.

4. Example of ideology

One example I would use is school. I think school is a good example of an Ideological State Apparatus because it teaches students more than just subjects like math, science, or history. It also teaches students how to behave in society, follow rules, respect authority, be responsible, and meet certain expectations.

For example, students are expected to come to class on time, complete assignments, listen to teachers, and follow school rules. After doing this for years, these behaviors can start to feel completely normal. We don’t necessarily think about why we are doing them anymore. This connects to Althusser’s idea that ideology can influence people by shaping how they understand their role in society.

I think this is a good example because nobody has to physically force every student to sit in a classroom and do their work. Instead, students have learned that these are the normal expectations of being a student. That is why I would classify school as an Ideological State Apparatus.

Natalia Hincapie Alzate – D3.2

1.What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example.

Repressive State Apparatus are institutions like police, military or courts that keep social order through physical force. and I think it’s repressive because its violent also mentally. like for example when law allows a police officer to stop a protest.

    2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

Ideological State Apparatuses are institutions like schools or political parties that through values or ethics, or ideas keep the order as the current law orders it. and I think it’s repressive too because it is not teaching its instead persuading in my opinion people who is usually not well educated or with not enough freedom.

    3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

primarily on physical force, violence and the other one, the ideological Apparatus with , beliefs that are from my point of view based in theories or not well informed.

    4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start us of off by giving an example.

A school where girls are separated from boys, read the Bible, and are taught sewing instead of robotics. This is an example of Ideological State Apparatuses, where tradition rather than physical force, guiding individuals to adopt specific gender roles and societal norms as natural or expected.

Repressive state apparatus utilizes tools such as violence, threats, institutionalization, or force to show dominance in a matter or situation regarding an individual or social class. The reason for this is to maintain power over a social class, person, or situation. This directly affects the behaviors of how people behave. An example is in some states, if someone was to take another human beings life, they would be given the death penalty. This is to avoid society thinking its okay to act on such a heinous crime.

According to Althusser, its called repressive because it utilizes force, violence and institutionalization for control over people, as opposed to persuasion.

Ideological state Apparatus utilizes tools such as persuasion, behavioral habits, and social/cultural norms to gain control over people. In example, churches create behavioral habits such as to praise a higher power, abide by these commandments which in turn are very similar to laws and to be a self righteous human being. when you do well in school, you get rewarded from your teacher or maybe your parents which is a form of persuasion combined with cultural norms to condition you to be a better person for society. This tactic works because it is based on persuasion rather than force, allowing the person to make the choice for themselves and if they choose to do so, creating structure for society. When people feel like they are forced or have no choice, they choose to rebel or do the opposite of what “society wants.”

Both repressive and ideological apparatuses are different because repressive apparatus is geared towards using brute force or the law with punitive punishments to gain control over a situation as opposed to ideological apparatus which uses persuasion and forms of rewards to gain control over a situation. Both are common because both are used to create structure in society, but the implementations of them are completely different.

Below is an example of ideological apparatus.

Kailey Hurtado Morales- Understanding Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses

A Repressive State Apparatus is an institution that maintains order and enforces the rules of society through authority, punishment, or the threat of force. I understand why Althusser uses the word “repressive” because these institutions have the ability to make people comply even when they do not willingly agree. Examples include the police, courts, prisons, and the military. If someone breaks a law, for example, the police can arrest them and the court can impose a punishment. In this situation, compliance is not based on convincing the person that the law is right; there are actual consequences for refusing to follow it.

Ideological State Apparatuses work differently because they influence people mainly through ideas, beliefs, values, and everyday practices rather than physical force or punishment. Examples can include schools, families, religion, and media. These institutions can shape what people consider normal, appropriate, successful, or even possible without people necessarily realizing that they are being influenced. School is a good example because students learn academic subjects, but they also learn to follow schedules, respect authority, meet deadlines, compete for grades, and behave according to certain expectations. Over time, those behaviors can begin to feel completely normal rather than something we were taught to accept.

The main difference I see between the two is how they get people to follow the expectations of society. Repressive State Apparatuses rely mainly on enforcement, punishment, and the possibility of force, while Ideological State Apparatuses rely mainly on beliefs and socialization. One makes people comply through consequences, while the other can influence people to willingly participate because certain behaviors and beliefs have come to feel normal. I think the ideological form can actually be harder to recognize because there does not necessarily have to be someone directly forcing you to do something. You may believe you are simply doing what is normal without questioning how you learned that definition of “normal” in the first place.

For my example, I would use a military recruitment advertisement. These advertisements often connect military service with ideas such as honor, patriotism, strength, opportunity, and serving your country. Rather than forcing someone to enlist, the advertisement can influence how a person views military service and what becoming a service member represents.

I would classify this primarily as an Ideological State Apparatus at work because the advertisement is attempting to influence people’s beliefs and values rather than using force to make them join. A person can still decide not to enlist, but the message can shape how they think about military service. I think this is a good example of Althusser’s argument because ideology can work by making certain ideas and roles seem desirable or natural without requiring direct punishment or force.

    Althusser Ideology

    1. Althusser definition of ideology includes repressive state apparatus. That is the state institutions that are used to maintain the social order by keeping the desire for change contained or limited. It is the primary purpose this apparatus to control through fear which is implemented through violence. The law enforcement institutions which include the prison system are there to put those who go against the ideology back into in line with the ideology.

    2. Ideological state apparatus is when institutions in society are used to dampen the masses desire for change which may lead to rebellion. The elite do not want the people to be on the street in a rebellious contentious uproar demanding change. Rather the elite prefer that the masses use a state approved channel for demands of change. The institutions that make up this apparatus are political parties, the education system, the welfare system, and even the private sector.

    3. Repressive apparatus are for correction of the people that go against state approved ideology. They use fear and even violence as they deem necessary. An example of this is the FBI. Ideological state apparatus is focused on distraction or watering down the foaming of the desire among the masses for change. This is done by giving the people enough help, welfare system, or distractions, sports and entertainment, or false choices, political parties. The most important is the education system which begins in grade school. It has the most important function of indoctrination of these impressionable minds.

    4. This is part of the ideological state apparatus as it advertises the idea that college will lead to monetary prosperity.

Anchelina Carranza – Repressive and Ideological

    1. Repressive state apparatus is the public institution using the threat of violence against people to control. I think he calls it repressive because of the actual word meaning “holding down” so it could mean they want to feel entitled in a way so the people can obey in certain situations.
    2. ideological state apparatus is the part of society wanting you to think a certain way. Including how things work in a society

    3. The repressive and ideological state apparatus are different from each other because one of them is involved with physical activity and the other one is how something makes you think.

    4. An example can be the movie “the matrix” it shows it can be an ideological apparatus because they’re in a reality that’s fake. They don’t want the people to realize or fight back so they use a simulation. It also shows how they make it a way of them not wanting others to get the reality.

    Steven Chavez – Ideology

    1) A Repressive State Apparatus is the use of threat of violence to create fear. This fear is used to control people’s behavior. Althusser calls it “repressive” because this apparatus is used to keep people in line. If a person behaves in a way that is not acceptable, then action is taken to stop them from behaving that way. For example, a person is robbing a bank is sentenced to prison. By sending them to prison, they are unable to rob a bank.

    2) An Ideological State Apparatus is an institution, such as a school, used to teach people how to behave in society. It also influences how you identify yourself as well as your beliefs. Politics and the mass media are two other examples of Ideological State Apparatuses. These do most of the work.

    3) A Repressive State Apparatus uses threat of violence and fear to control people. On the other hand, Ideological State Apparatuses rely on the institutions Althusser mentioned rather than the threat of violence. People learn what is normal behavior in society and maintain the status quo. Repressive State Apparatuses are only use when Ideological State Apparatuses don’t work.

    4) This picture of a person being sentenced to prison is an example of a Repressive State Apparatus.

    Toni Slay – State Apparatuses

    1. I would say a repressive state apparatus is a system that controls people by utilizing the threat of punishment or violence. This can include police, courts, and prisons. These systems make sure people follow the rules and are held accountable if they don’t. Althusser calls it “Repressive” because this state apparatus uses force or punishment to pressures people to follows rules through institutions. Repressive means to control others by force in order to make them submit.
    2. An ideological state apparatus is a system that shapes peoples ways of thinking and strives to maintain the status quo by influencing how people perceive and behave. It can prevent change by teaching others certain values and beliefs for instance within, schools, family and mass media.
    3. Repressive state apparatus controls people through force which can even be physical. While an ideological state apparatus controls people through beliefs and ideas. For example repressive state apparatus is applied when someone is getting arrested by the police for breaking a law. As for Ideological state apparatus, that could be applied when students ideas are changed due to being exposed to religious beliefs in school.
    4. This is an example of ideological state apparatus because the advertisement is trying to influence the way people think about Burger Kings fries. By saying they have 40% less fat and 30% fewer calories, the ad makes people believe burger kings fries are the healthier and better choice than other fast food options. Its advertising to influence peoples beliefs and choices without exactly using force but, persuasion.
