Discussion 6.2

1. The concept that “faction” reminds me of is social class. A faction is a group of people with shared interests or goals. Different social classes can have different interests, especially when it comes to money, property, and government.
2. According to Federalist No. 10, the source of wealth and private property comes from differences in people’s abilities, or “faculties.” Faculties means people’s different abilities, skills, and talents. Madison explains that people have different abilities and interests, which leads some people to own property and wealth while others do not. This creates differences between social classes.
3. I do not completely agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty. People can have different abilities, but wealth also depends on things like family wealth, opportunities, education, access to resources, and social conditions. Having different abilities alone does not explain why some people are wealthy while others are poor.
4. The “first object” of government is the protection of property. This surprises me because today we often hear that the government’s main purpose is to protect people, provide services, and maintain order. Federalist No. 10 places a strong focus on protecting property and the rights connected to it.
5. I am not surprised that Federalist No. 10 supports a Republican form of government instead of pure democracy. The wealthy class was concerned that if everyone had direct political power, poorer and working-class people could support laws that might affect the property and wealth of wealthy people. A representative government was seen as a way to control these conflicts between different groups and protect property.

Discussion 6.1

Based on Readings 6.1 and 6.2, the Constitution was mainly written by the wealthy and upper social class, especially wealthy landowners, merchants, and other people who had economic power. The working class and poor people were mostly excluded from the process and did not have the same political power. For example, the readings explain that many of the people involved in writing the Constitution were wealthy property owners, while workers and poorer people had much less influence.

I would say the social class structure of early United States society was similar to ours today in some ways, but it was also different. There were wealthy people who had more money, property, and political power, while working-class and poor people had fewer resources and less influence. Today, we also have differences between wealthy people and working-class people, although society and political rights have changed.

The people who wrote the Constitution were afraid of democracy because they worried that working-class and poorer people could gain enough political power to change the economic system. The wealthy class wanted to protect their property and wealth. They were concerned that if more people had political power, they could support laws that would take power or wealth away from the wealthy class.

Discussion 5.3

1)The statistic that made the biggest impression on me was that a small percentage of people in the United States own a very large amount of the country’s wealth, while many other people have much less. This stood out to me because it shows how unequal wealth can be between different groups of people.

2)One implication of having such a large wealth gap is that people with less money may have fewer opportunities for education, housing, healthcare, and better jobs. I do see this in everyday life. For example, some people can easily afford college, a nice home, or unexpected expenses because they have more financial support, while other people have to work many hours and still struggle to pay for basic needs. This can make it harder for people with less wealth to improve their situation.

Discussion

The means of production are the things people use to make products, like machines, tools, buildings, and land. For example a restaurant’s kitchen and cooking equipment are means of production. Labor is the work people do to make a product or provide a service. For example, a cook’s work in a restaurant is labor. Value means how much something is worth. Something can have value because people spend time and effort making it. Labor and value are connected because workers help create value through their work.

Labor is the actual work a person does. Labor power is a person’s ability to work. For example a person’s ability to work at a store is their labor power while the work they actually do at the store is their labor.

Surplus value is the extra value created by workers that is not given back to them as wages. For example a worker may help a business make more money than the amount the worker receives in pay. Surplus value is important because it helps us understand the relationship between workers and business owners.

Discussion 4.2 – Maria Rodriguez

  1. Owners and employees are different because they get their money in different ways. Owner’s make money from the work of other people and from things they own, like businesses, stocks, or property. For example, a person who owns a company can make money from the work of the employees in that company. Employees, on the other hand, work for someone else and get paid a wage or salary. For example, a cashier works for a store and gets paid for the hours they work. The reading also explains that workers create the value of products and services through their labor, while owners receive the profits. So, the main difference is that employees work to earn wages, while owners can make money from what they own and from the work of other people.

Discussion 4.1 – Maria Rodriguez

2) The subway station closest to where I live is 36 St in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I think the social class that is most common in my neighborhood is the working class and middle class. Sunset Park has people with different incomes, but many families are working and living in regular residential areas. According to Reading 4.1, income and education can affect how people see their social class. I think this is accurate for my neighborhood because I see many working families and people from different backgrounds.
