Althusser Ideology

1. Althusser definition of ideology includes repressive state apparatus. That is the state institutions that are used to maintain the social order by keeping the desire for change contained or limited. It is the primary purpose this apparatus to control through fear which is implemented through violence. The law enforcement institutions which include the prison system are there to put those who go against the ideology back into in line with the ideology.

2. Ideological state apparatus is when institutions in society are used to dampen the masses desire for change which may lead to rebellion. The elite do not want the people to be on the street in a rebellious contentious uproar demanding change. Rather the elite prefer that the masses use a state approved channel for demands of change. The institutions that make up this apparatus are political parties, the education system, the welfare system, and even the private sector.

3. Repressive apparatus are for correction of the people that go against state approved ideology. They use fear and even violence as they deem necessary. An example of this is the FBI. Ideological state apparatus is focused on distraction or watering down the foaming of the desire among the masses for change. This is done by giving the people enough help, welfare system, or distractions, sports and entertainment, or false choices, political parties. The most important is the education system which begins in grade school. It has the most important function of indoctrination of these impressionable minds.

4. This is part of the ideological state apparatus as it advertises the idea that college will lead to monetary prosperity.

Daniela Ortega – Discussion 3.2

Repressive State Apparatus is being able to control something through the threat of violence. A reason why Althusser could call it repressive is because reprieve is power. It is someone being able to control what others are doing and it is usually by force. An example would be the police. We are able to understand his words since usually police have power to be able to do as they please since most people are scared of them or know they don’t have much of a say since there is a power dynamic.

Ideological State Apparatuses is when police, court, and prison only step in when something fails to put people in their place. It prevents change to status quo. It seems to work by ideology. Their society is based on beliefs and values.

Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses are different from each other because Repressive State Apparatuses is force with punishment or violence and Ideological State Apparatuses is society exist naturally by status quo. The difference between them is Ideological State Apparatuses shapes beliefs for status quo and the other enforces undergoing commands.

Repressive Apparatuses at work

Journi McEachern- Discussion Board 3.2

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? A repressive state apparatus is Althusser’s term for the parts of the state that maintain control through force, such as the police, military, courts, prisons, and government. He calls it “repressive” because these institutions do not ask for your agreement; they make you comply. If you break a law, they can arrest you, take you to court, put you in prison, or use physical force. The word “repress” means to hold something down by force, which is exactly what these institutions do. They are not trying to convince you that the law is right; they make sure you follow it, whether you agree or not, backed by the state’s power to punish. For example, during a protest, if people are mostly accepting of the system, they may follow the rules without anyone having to force them. But if a protest breaks out because people are angry about something and refuse to disperse, that is when the repressive state apparatus becomes more visible. Police may move in, people may get arrested, and force may be used.
  2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, and how do they seem to work? An ideological state apparatus is a public or private institution that shapes people’s values and beliefs to maintain social order and capitalist rule without resorting to physical force. Althusser’s point is that society keeps people in line not only through force but also by shaping what they believe. Examples include schools, media, family, churches, and similar institutions. Unlike the repressive state apparatus, these institutions do not arrest you or throw you in jail if you step out of line. Instead, they get inside your head early and often until certain ideas feel like common sense rather than something you were taught to believe. The way they work is subtle. For example, school is not just teaching you math and reading; it is also quietly training you to show up on time, follow authority, sit still, wait your turn, and accept grades and rankings as a normal way of measuring your worth. Nobody is directly forcing you to believe any of that, but by the time you are an adult, it can feel totally natural to accept hierarchy, deadlines, and authority without questioning them. The same applies to media. It is not “forcing” you to think a certain way, but the more you are exposed to certain images, stories, and assumptions, the more those ideas start to feel like just “how the world is.”
  3. How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two? The main difference between the Repressive State Apparatus and the Ideological State Apparatuses lies in how each gets people to comply. The repressive state apparatus, such as the police, military, courts, and prisons, works through actual force. It does not care if you agree with the rules; it makes sure you follow them, using punishment as the backup if you do not. Repressive is obvious and unified. You know exactly what it is when a police officer shows up or when you are standing in a courtroom. Ideological state apparatuses, such as schools, the media, families, and churches, operate in the opposite way. They do not force you to comply; instead, they shape what you believe until following the rules feels normal. As a result, you go along with the system because you think it is right, not simply because you are afraid of being arrested. Ideological state apparatuses are more scattered and subtle. They are spread across many separate institutions that do not always look connected to state power, which is part of why they are so effective.

Gabriel Maurice – Ideology in Politics

1) A Repressive State Apparatus is an institution that secures obedience through force, coercion, or punishment. For example, the police are a Repressive State Apparatus, and if a person commits a crime, they have the right to use force to arrest that individual. As with the police, Althusser calls it “repressive” because these institutions have the authority to legally compel people to follow society’s norms. Other examples of Repressive State Apparatuses include the military, government, and administrative bodies.

2) An Ideological State Apparatus is an institution that shapes people’s beliefs and values. Althusser’s examples include schools, families, churches, and political institutions. Rather than forcing people to comply with society’s rules, these institutions teach and reinforce what society deems appropriate and successful.

3) The main difference between Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses is that Repressive uses force to control people, while Ideological teaches individuals what’s considered normal.

4) This image of a police officer arresting an individual is an example of the Repressive State Apparatus.

Discussion Board 3.2

Okay, let ‘s go to the questions, consider the following:

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example.

2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start us of off by giving an example.
