Seminar Project: Mark Making
For young children, art begins with making marks on paper. Mark making involves both sign making and meaning making. In this seminar project, you are going to engage in your own mark making.
Watch this video:
Now, take a look at these examples of the many ways that children can engage in mark making. Notice that these activities use a wide range of materials and media (drawing, painting, collage) and remember that there are many other possible examples.
Now you are ready to engage in your own mark making.
Using materials at home, please make three separate artworks that show different kinds of mark making. These are all about exploring tools and materials, so do not make pictures, just work abstractly:
- One artwork should be a collage, using whatever materials you have available.
- One artwork should be a painting, using watercolors, tempera paints, finger paints–whatever is available.
- One artwork can be a different painting, using a different type of mark-making, or you can use crayons or markers.
Take a photo of each artwork and place it into a Google Slide or PowerPoint presentation. Then, explain what you did to make the marks. Upload the presentation here.
