I am interested in this theme because… I am interested in plants, because they are so amazing and unique, just like us or children. Plants play a very
important role in our lives. Plants bear fruits, vegetables, body spray, perfume and even vitamins. There are so many plants in the world and they are so important to our lives. There are several ways to explore plants, through a florist, gardener and one of my childhood favorites, The Botanical Garden, neighborhood gardens and books like the The great Kapoke Tree and others. Plants are just like humans, just like we need things to survive, so do the plants and trees around us. Plants have different parts like humans, for different functions, like the buds, flowers, leaves, fruits, stem and roots.Buds protect the leaves and baby flowers from being harmed from harmful elements, such as bugs, and insects. Flowers are the most beautiful part of a plant. They are usually very colorful and attractive, so attractive they attract bees and other insects to their beauty. Leaves are the most important part of a plant because it is through the leaves that the sunlight is absorbed and makes food and also releases oxygen. Fruit is a part of a plant that contains excessive food and seeds. Although not all fruit may be edible or sweet, it is still a fruit. Sometimes the fruits help plants disperse their seeds to create more plants.Stems acts as the pillar of the plant it holds the plant upright and carries water, food and minerals to the part of the plants from the root. Roots help to absorb the water and minerals for the soil and also acts as an anchor for the plants when it is being faced with harsh conditions . The roots make sure the plant stays firm in the soil, so amazing they are.
Through this theme curriculum, students will discover the different kinds of plants and what they provide for us, and how we depend on them to survive and help us with our day to day lives. For instance there are five kinds of plants I would like to teach you about. Trees, herbs, shrubs, bulbs and vinesTrees are perennial plants. Many trees live for many years, some varieties tens or hundreds of years, and some even longer than most other plants, and some trees grow really tall.Herb is any green or leafy part of a plant. Although herb is a plant, it is not a vegetable. Herbs are plants that
you can use for fragrant or aromatic reasons. They can be used to flavor food, as a seasoning, perfumes, and even in natural medicines. Shrubs are a woody plant that has several stems, that are non dominant, and usually less than 10 feet tall. Some shrubs can be considered to be small trees, but it would still be identified as a shrub.Bulbs are actually a complete plant within a small round package that contains future roots, stems, leaves and the flower. Another name for bulbs are storage lockers, because they store the nutrients and energy for the plant to grow and bloom in it.Vines are plants whose stem requires support and it usually climbs by tendrils, or twining or creeping along the ground.
The sub-themes will support students learning this big-picture topic by… How does the weather and seasons affect the plants and why?
