SafeZone 201 is designed to complement SafeZone 101 training and allow faculty to become change agents in their respective departments. Change agents actively question, trouble, and disrupt spaces and practices, both in and out of the classrooms. The participants will determine ways to make their spaces more welcoming and inviting for LGBTQIA+ individuals and consider ways to create new experiences and practices to support the ever-evolving needs of queer students, staff and faculty.
This six-hour training is open to 10 faculty members, with a selection of faculty coming from across departments. Participants will attend 2 two-hour online sessions via Zoom and one wrap-up session to share out ideas for practice.
A stipend of $250 will be granted to everyone who completes the training. Funding is provided by the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium, due to generous funding from the New York City Council Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual Caucus and the Office of the Mayor, and supported by The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives.
Participants will:
- Discuss methods and best practices to serve as change agents;
- Become motivated change agents (go-tos) in their respective departments to support LGBTQIA+ students and colleagues;
- Build and actively serve as members of a community of change for the wider BMCC community.
SafeZone 301 is designed to complement SafeZone 101 and 201 training, focusing on the power of pedagogy to foster resilience. Considering the obstacles and challenges LGBTQIA+/queer-identified students confront, this training looks at how faculty can build and employ practices of joy, love, and healing. Participants will actively work to create plans for integrating practices of joy, love, and teaching into the curriculum of a course they choose.
This 3-session training is open to 10 faculty members, with a selection of faculty coming from across departments. Participants will engage with shared readings, attend two 1.5-hour online sessions, via Zoom and one wrap-up session to share out ideas for practice.
A stipend of $250 will be granted to everyone who completes the training. Though open to everyone, per CUNY policy, to be eligible for the stipend, you must be on a faculty [teaching/non-teaching, full-time/part-time] or CLT line. Participants will also get a book that we will use for readings.
· Read scholarship about and discuss practices for promoting joy, love, healing, and resilience among LGBTQIA+ students;
· Evaluate and integrate practices into the curriculum of a course of their choosing;
· Become active and vocal proponents for embedding joy, love, healing, and resilience into the curriculum
