LGBTQIA+ Consortium Projects

Building an Oral History:

We are looking, over the course of a few years, to build an oral history of LGBTQIA+/queer experiences at BMCC, and we will not only be looking to record experiences of students and alumni but also experiences of faculty, staff, and retirees.

Integrating Queer Pedagogy and Disrupting Heteronormativity in the Classroom and Curriculum Workshops:

Spring 2025: We held the first ever SafeZone 201 workshop. SafeZone 201 is designed to complement SafeZone 101 training and allow faculty to become change agents in their respective departments. Change agents actively question, trouble, and disrupt spaces and practices, both in and out of the classrooms. The participants will determine ways to make their spaces more welcoming and inviting for LGBTQIA+ individuals and consider ways to create new experiences and practices to support the ever-evolving needs of queer students, staff and faculty.

Fall 2025 and Spring 2026: We will continue to build on the success of the inaugural SafeZone 201 workshop series by hosting another one with new faculty members. In Spring, we will hold the first SafeZone 301 workshop series, designed to help faculty members to center queerness.

Fall 2023: We are looking for 15 faculty members to participate in a three-session focus group on their experiences integrating queer pedagogy and/or disrupting or troubling heteronormativity in the curriculum and classroom: Successes, difficulties/challenges, concerns, thoughts. There is a $100 stipend for participants.

Spring 2024: We will also host workshops in the spring ($100 stipends) for up to 15 participants to help faculty learn how to integrate queer pedagogy and/or to disrupt/trouble heteronormativity in the curriculum and classroom.
