  1. The primary differences in the role of citizens in government among federal, confederation, and unitary systems are based on how power is distributed. In a federal system, citizens participate at both the national and state levels by voting for different leaders and influencing laws in both governments. In a confederation system, most power is held by the states, so citizens have more influence in their local or state governments and less at the national level. In a unitary system, power is centralized in one national government, so citizens mainly interact with and are influenced by that central authority.
  2. The system of division of power means that government authority is shared between different levels, usually national and state governments. Each level has its own responsibilities, and some powers are shared. This system prevents one level of government from having too much control and allows each level to handle issues that affect them most.
  3. The federal government shaped the actions of New York State and local governments during the COVID-19 pandemic in several ways. It provided funding and emergency relief, which helped support hospitals, businesses, and individuals. Federal agencies gave guidelines on safety measures like masks and social distancing, which New York used to create its own policies. The federal government also helped with vaccine distribution, influencing how New York organized and carried out its vaccination programs. Overall, the federal government influenced state and local actions through funding, guidance, and resources.

HAMZA TAZOUTI – Understanding Ideology and Political Beliefs in Society

How do I understand ideology?

Beliefs and specific values define how human beings view the global environment and community structures. Ideology impacts the way individuals contemplate governmental affairs, financial resources, favorable outcomes, and communal challenges. It has been observed that ideology is followed by people without awareness because household units and educational institutions teach these concepts. Ideology is absorbed through communication channels and spiritual systems by children while they grow within a specific culture. Many people believe that diligent labor leads to the attainment of favorable outcomes for the individual. Harder efforts are encouraged by this concept, even though some individuals fail to notice that initial advantages are not shared by everyone. The reality of unequal beginnings is often ignored by those who focus only on personal drive because of the strength of this belief. Ideology remains the primary reason why social disparities are sometimes overlooked by the public. Human conduct and personal viewpoints are formed by ideology during daily life. Concerns regarding individuals with low income, medical professional services, educational institutions, and fairness are viewed through the lens of ideology. Experts claim that ideology causes various groups to interpret the same communal problems in opposing ways. Certain perspectives are made to seem ordinary because the community surrounds individuals with these specific views from birth. Ideology creates a framework that makes specific thoughts feel natural to the human mind.

2-Difference between conservative and liberal ideology in U.S. politics

Many people believe that the primary variation between conservatives and liberals exists in the authority that the state administration holds over social life and financial systems. Individuals who identify as conservatives advocate for a limited state administration and reduced fiscal charges while promoting personal accountability and increased liberty for commercial enterprises and separate persons. It has been observed that conservatives emphasize that human beings must maintain self-sufficiency instead of looking for assistance from the state administration. Liberals suggest that social and financial difficulties are solved by the government through specific interventions. Experts claim that support is given by liberals to initiatives providing medical assistance, educational institutions, and aid for monetary hardships. Regulation of commercial enterprises is encouraged by liberals because the protection of laborers and the natural surroundings is necessary. Opposition to increasing fiscal charges is common among conservatives since conservatives argue that individuals should retain their own wealth.

3-My understanding of Althusser’s definition of ideology

I understand Althusser’s idea of ideology as the way society teaches people how to think and behave without using force. He believed institutions like schools, media, religion, and family shape people’s beliefs and make the system feel normal. According to Althusser, people often accept society the way it is because ideology teaches them to see it as natural. Even when the system is unfair, people continue following the rules because they were taught to think that way. For example, schools do not only teach subjects like math and history. Schools also teach discipline, obedience, punctuality, and respect for authority. These lessons prepare students to follow rules later in jobs and society. I think Althusser’s idea shows how powerful ideology is because people usually do not notice how much society influences the way they think and act.

Discussion Board 3.1 – Alina Priada

1. How I understand ideology

In my understanding, ideology is a set of beliefs and ideas that influence how people see the world and understand society. It shapes how individuals think about politics, the economy, and social issues. Often, people follow an ideology without realizing it because it feels “normal” or natural to them.

For example, capitalism is an ideology that promotes individual success, competition, and private property. Many people believe that hard work always leads to success, which shows how ideology shapes the way we think about success and failure.

Overall, ideology helps explain why people have different opinions about how society should work and what role the government should play.

2. Conservative vs. liberal ideology in the U.S.

The main difference between conservative and liberal ideology in the U.S. is their view of government and social change. Conservatives usually support limited government, personal responsibility, and traditional values. Liberals tend to support government action to reduce inequality and protect individual rights.

For example, conservatives often prefer lower taxes and fewer regulations, while liberals believe government programs can help create more equal opportunities for people.

3. Althusser’s idea of ideology

According to Louis Althusser, ideology shapes how people see themselves in society. He believed ideology works through institutions like schools, family, and media. These institutions teach social rules and values that help maintain the existing system.

For example, schools teach not only subjects but also discipline and obedience, preparing students to fit into society.

Melanie Cen-Understanding Ideology in Everyday life

    • a) Describe what ideology is in a brief paragraph (in your own words).
      • Ideology is a system of ideas that is agreed upon by a group of people. The ideas can be beliefs or values that serve the purpose of explaining, evaluating, orientating or prescribing. Ideologies are used to explain social events and conditions and also give people a place in society by providing them a sense of identity.
    • b) Give an example illustrating what you wrote in (a).
      • America is a capitalist country where it is understood that people can own assets and produce goods and services with the intention of generating profits in a free market. The set of ideas/beliefs that people are inherently selfish and that free markets are the most efficient generator of wealth are what drive capitalism.
    • c) Write another paragraph (or two), explaining to your reader with additional details, how you understand ideology.
      • I understand ideologies as road maps that people who share common beliefs can decide to follow in society that aid in determining what they should do with their beliefs based on commonality in their ideas. A great example of this are the 2 major political parties of America in Democratic and Republican parties.
    • I understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideology in US politics. Both based on the role of government and freedom. Liberals generally believe the government should take an article role for solving social problems and economic problems, for instance privately, health care access and discrimination. The opposite of conservative are believe government should be limited and individuals and free markets are more capable of effectively addressing these issues.
    • Key words of ideologies include freedom, equality, and tradition. Liberals may require government support due to conservatives freedom from government interference. Liberals are usually more willing to accept social change while conservatives tend to value tradition and stability. For example is health care: Liberals frequently support government involvement to make sure everyone has health care insurance but conservatives are willing to accept private, market based solutions.
  1. .
    • Althusser’s definition of ideology is the means to answer the question of how to get people to act against their own self interests – Accepting beliefs that you believe without consciously knowing that you believe them so that you feel you belong in society. Ideology makes you feel like you have a choice and responsibility in the society that you live in and leads you away from considering inequalities or acting against them.

Vanessa Peralta- Ideology

  1. Ideology is what a particular group or a set of people believe in. The group of people share these beliefs, value or ideas and believe that life should be run this way. Everything starts with an idea. One person has an idea, they share it amongst the crowd and everyone begins to believe in the same idea which leads to ideology. For example: one person thought that we should all have freedom of speech, they shared the idea to a friend or a neighbor. Each person passed the idea around, an idea that now they are believing to be the right way to live and now the group of people are liberals.
    •           Ideology factors in both nature and nurture. Usually what you believe in is highly influenced by your race, gender, religion or ethnicity. For example everyone could assume that women in general would learn toward being a feminist who believe that women can do it all, women can rule, women can do just as much as men but the way someone was raised can alter there beliefs and values. The women might believe in equality in women but not be a feminist. The women might not be a feminist at all and believe the opposite. Who we are, the people around us and our culture shape our ideas and where we stand in society.

2. The difference between conservative and liberal ideology in US politics is that conservatives believe a large government posses a threat to our liberty while liberals believe in equality. One of the big arguments would be on taxes. Conservatives want to lower taxes but liberal want to higher the taxes on the rich who so happens to usually be the class that majority conservative. Another one would about the military. Conservatives are patriotic and believe in a high defense but liberals believe that the government should cut military money and spend it on other things.

3. According to Althusser, ideology is the way people experience and make sense of their relationship to society, especially the social structures they are in like school. So basically our life experiences feed our ideas in what’s good or bad. For example the structure of school teaches us how to obey, therefore it continues the cycle of ideology because we are internalizing it. Althusser became curious in knowing what makes people act against there interest and discovers that its fear.

Annie Rong 3.1

  1. a. Ideology is a set of ideas and beliefs that shape how people understand the world around them. It influences what we think of is normal, fair, or possible.
    b. An example of ideology is the idea of the U.S democracy being described as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” This idea encourages people to believe that the government truly represents everyone and works in the public’s best interest, even when power and influence are not evenly shared.
    c. Ideology is learned through school, the media, family, and culture, so it becomes something we rarely question because we are so exposed to it. The sense of familiarity makes it feel like common sense, and it doesn’t feel forced.
  2. The key difference is how much responsibility should fall on individuals versus the government, and how much change is seen as necessary or beneficial. Conservative ideology often emphasizes tradition, limited government, and personal responsibility. For example, conservatives often argue that government programs should be limited because people should rely more on themselves rather than the state. Liberal ideology tends to focus on equality, social justice, and the idea that government should play a role in helping people who are disadvantaged. For example, liberals often support policies such as universal healthcare because they believe access to basic needs should not depend on income.
  3. Althusser’s definition of ideology is that it shapes how individuals see themselves and their place in society. He argues that ideology makes people feel like they are freely choosing their actions, even though those choices are shaped by social systems and institutions. Instead of using force, ideology encourages people to accept the system as normal. For example, school teaches students to follow rules, respect authority, and accept certain social roles. It shapes how people behave and what they expect from society without relying on direct force.

DEVIKA AGASEN- My understanding on ideology.

  1. a) To me ideology is the set of ideas, beliefs and values that shape how people see the world and understand how society should work. It’s not just about politics. It influences how we think about fairness, sucess, responsibilities, freedom and even what feels normal to us. Most of the time, we don’t even realise we are following an ideology because it feels natural, like this is just how things are.

b) For example, if someone believes that people who work have will always suceed, the belief comes from an ideology that values individual responsibility and effort. This way of thinking can shape how they feel about things like welfare or government assistance. They might believe people should rely on themselves instead of help from the government.

c) I understand ideology as something that quietly guides our thinking without us questioning it much. It helps explain why people can look at the same situation like poverty, education, or healthcare and come to completely different conclusions. Ideology acts like a lens, it doesn’t change the facts, but it changes how we interpret them. What’s interesting is that ideology isn’t just taught in schools or discussed in politics, it’s also passed on through family, media, religion, and culture. Over time, these ideas become so familiar that they feel obvious, even though someone else with a different ideology might strongly disagree.

2.) The difference between conservative and liberal ideology in U.S. politics comes down to how much power and responsibility the government should have, and what values should be prioritized. Conservatives tend to emphasize liberty, limited government, and individual responsibility, while liberals focus more on equality, government involvement, and social support.

Conservatives generally believe that too much government control threatens individual freedom. They often argue that people should succeed or fail based on their own choices, and that lower taxes and less regulation allow the economy and individuals to thrive. For example, a conservative might oppose high taxes because they believe people should keep the money they earn and decide for themselves how to use it.

Liberals, on the other hand, believe that the government should play an active role in fixing social and economic problems. They tend to focus on equality and fairness, especially for people who are disadvantaged. A liberal might support higher taxes on the wealthy to fund public education, healthcare, or social programs, because they believe government action can help level the playing field.

So, it comes down to this, conservatives prioritize freedom from government interference, while liberals prioritize equality and fairness, even if that means more government involvement.

3.) Based on the video, Althusser defines ideology as something much deeper than just political opinions. I understand his definition to mean that ideology is the way people experience their relationship to society and power, even if that experience isn’t completely accurate. Ideology doesn’t just exist in our thoughts, it exists in institutions like schools, churches, media, and families, which constantly teach us how to behave and what roles we are expected to play.

Althusser argues that ideology interpellates individuals, meaning it calls out to us and shapes us into certain kinds of people or subjects. We don’t just choose ideology, ideology shapes us before we’re even aware of it.

For example, in school, students learn more than just math or history. They learn to raise their hand, follow schedules, respect authority, and accept rules. According to Althusser, this isn’t neutral, it’s ideology at work, preparing people to function in society in specific ways. Even though it feels normal, it’s actually shaping how we see ourselves and our place in the world.

I understand Althusser’s idea of ideology as something unavoidable and deeply embedded in everyday life. It’s not just about what we believe, but how society subtly trains us to see the world and ourselves in certain ways, often without us realizing it.

Atara Jones- Ideology

(a) From my understanding, ideology is a social construct that shapes people of different races, classes and ethnicities understand how society is supposed to function. It influences how people think, behave, and make sense of their position in the world. Ideology often mirrors the interests of those with the most power by justifying existing social arrangements and making them seem fair. To me, ideology gives meaning and justification to social rules and inequalities in ways that makes sense to whoever the ideas benefit.
(b) An example of this is the belief that society is fair and that people end up exactly where they deserve solely based on their own effort. Many people are taught if they work hard enough and “follow the rules”, they will succeed and that if they struggle, its at no one’s fault but their own. This belief ignores factors like unequal access to education, low wages and class difference. This ideology benefits those with power because it makes inequality seem justified and discouraged people from questioning a failing system.

(c) Ideology originally developed as a Marxist idea that explained how beliefs were formed and maintained in feudal societies, influencing everyone from peasants to kings and priests. Ideology mirrors the interest of the highest class and justified the rulings that kept them in power. The lower class did not challenge the ruling because ideology made the system seem natural and normal, limiting the awareness that any other alternatives were possible. In the twentieth century, ideology took a similar meaning, even without feudalism, because people still believe they are supposed to act, think and behave in a certain manner within society. Instead of the churches providing the “rules and guidelines” to follow, institutions such as elementary and secondary schools now play a huge role in shaping beliefs, values, and behaviors. Because of this, I understand ideology as not just a set of ideas, but an ongoing process that shapes how people see themselves, their choices, and what they believe is possible within society.

2. In American Politics, conservatives are generally on the right side of the spectrum, while liberals are on the left. The main difference and dividing line between the two has to do with the amount of government involvement and individual responsibility. Conservatives believe that the larger the government becomes, the more it poses a threat to individual freedom. Because of this, they prefer limited government involvement in order to maximize individual freedom and personal responsibility. American liberals believe that a larger government can help solve more social and economic problems. Liberals believe the government should intervene in the economy, especially to help minorities and others who are at disadvantage. Lastly, liberals are more focused on how the government can step in to protect people and reduce inequality.

3. Althusser defines ideology as something that causes people to act against their own interest while believing what they are doing is normal or fair. He argues that ideology is important for social critique because it helps explain why people accept systems that do not benefit them. Althusser believes that there are two types of apparatuses that control behavior, repressive state apparatus and ideological state apparatus. Repressive state apparatus control people through fear or threat of violence, such as police, courts and prisons. The other apparatus controls how people think rather than through direct force, ideological state apparatus. Ideological apparatus make people believe that they are supposed to act a certain way in order to be accepted by society. This encourages people to stay in line without the need of punishment. When ideological apparatus state fails and people defy or rebel, repressive is used to discipline them.

Althusser describes schools as the most important ideological state apparatus. He argues that no other institutions demands as much consistent attention for as long as eight hours a day, five days a week. Students behave in school because they believe that is what they are supposed to do, but those who do not follow the rules are punished through detention, suspension, or expulsion. Althusser states the purpose of schools is not only to teach subjects like math, science and history, but most importantly to teach discipline and obedience. Schools produce non-confrontational, submissive, and obedient workers that can function within a capitalist system.

Emma Guagliardo Discussion 3.1

1.

(A) To me ideology is basically how people view the world and society from the perspective of themselves through beliefs about the economy, government, politics and social issues. whether that be for or against us. Ideology also shapes how people decide what is wrong or right and what policies are a core value to each and every individual whether fair or not. everyone believes in a form of ideology even if they do not even notice it.

(B) An example of ideology is how everyone feels differently about the government. half of people think that because they believe that the government should be smaller that people should be able to take care of themselves more. This means less reliability on the government for education, healthcare and housing. Others on the other hand believe that the government should help provide healthcare, housing and education for everyone.

(C) To me I feel like a lot of the time people think their beliefs are just common knowledge but it really comes from the ideology they learned over time whether that be from family, school ,religion, news and social media. What we don’t think makes an impact on your day to day actually does even the way you view your parents has an impact.

2.

(A) I understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideology in U.S politics by understanding that the difference really comes down to how each side view the government and what we think is most important within a society. Liberals feel like on one hand that the government should play a big role in society in a way that makes it fair and equal. They also feel as if intervention from the government is necessary to help people who are struggling and to fix economic and social issues. On the other hand conservatives tend to believe government should be limited and focus mainly on individual liberty and economic freedom. They feel if the government gets too big. it will take away individual liberty and economic freedom.

(B) the dividing line falls into liberty vs equality conservatives worry about shielding individual freedom even if that could lead to inequality. whereas liberals are more concerned about reducing inequality even if that means more government control. For example conservatives argue that raising the minimum wage can eventually hurt businesses which can lead to mass job loss whereas liberals feel more as if everyone should get paid a livable wage.

3.

(A) Althussers definition of ideology is as something that forms the way that people sees the world and their roll in society. He believes that ideology is not only about political opinions but also something that falls into an every day interactions. Althusser makes the point that certain ideas feel normal, and people tend to grow up accepting these ideas and not questioning the ideas. His idea that success only comes from hard work and getting a job. This is taught throughout family, schools and the media, and that if they fail that it is their fault. ideology shapes how people think and act in everyday routines without even being aware of it to begin with

Jada Vanderhorst – What is Ideology?

  1. Ideology refers to the ideas and beliefs about how society works or should work. Ideology helps people make decisions and structure their lives in a particular way. Ideology puts people in positions to views on society differently. It influences laws and shapes humans’ identity. It helps people interpret how they want to live their lives based on the social norms that are created.       The way I see ideology is that we are taught things from birth to think it’s the “normal” way to live. We never really understand the true definition of right and wrong because we have so many different influences. The way they organized the economy puts people in groups. We understand relationships based on what we are taught throughout our lives

2. The difference between conservative and liberal ideology in the US government is that one believes in freedom and the other believes in equality. Conservative is more for people who feel that the less government, the more independent people will be. Rather than liberals feel that the more government, the better the society will be. It will help with equality and social support.

3. Althusser defined ideology as a system that shapes people’s beliefs and reality. He believed this taught people that the social norms were normal, and that was the reality of it. He felt that this guided people’s behaviors and shaped their personalities.

Shumaila Shafin- Ideology In Everyday Life

1.In my opinion an ideology is a group of ideas and attitudes that influence how we perceive the world around us and where we fit into it. AN ideology teaches people what is acceptable and right and what success is often without them realizing it. It easily influences people because it feels natural.

For instance many Americans grow up believing that if they work hard they are going to succeed in life. This idea keeps encouraging them to work harder even though the system is unfair and is often against their favor. It makes their poverty seem like a personal failure rather than social injustice.

Most of the time ideology does not tell us what is right or wrong for us or what we should do. It shapes how we see schools, jobs, money and authority as normal or right. Ideology shapes how we view need for long hours at work, student debt , how we deal with the issues of equality etc. All under the disguise of “that’s just the way life is.”It creates the illusion of freedom while limiting people’s options. For example we can choose whatever career we want but we still need to work or sometimes overwork to survive. Ideology creates a sense of control over the masses by creating certain behaviors and expectations within individuals.

2.Conservatives believe that a government should be small as small as possible and their roles in the peoples lives should be limited. they believe that a large government poses threat to individual liberty. They that the countries defense should be strong hence they spend more in this sector. And they leave the discretionary spendings to private sectors and individuals. And because of the low spendings people have to pay lower taxes. They tend to give more importance to traditional American values like family faith and religion so we don’t see much support from them for lgbtq and abortion rights.

On the other hand liberals believes in relatively larger government. They believe bigger government can solve bigger problems. Their goals and services are more people oriented. Liberals have higher rates especially on wealthy and big corporations due to their programs and support for the struggling citizens. They believe in providing better healthcare, higher wages, better education. Liberals also believe in personal freedom so they strongly support lgbtq rights and abortion.

Conservatives focuses more on individual effort and smaller government while liberals supports collective support and equality, The key difference is where the burden of responsibility lies with the individual or the society as a whole.

3.Althusser describes ideology as a way to shape people from the inside out. Ideology causes individuals to become subjects, people begin to accept the roles assigned to them in society, and do not question their assigned roles.
Althusser identifies two forms of societal control:1. Repressive State Apparatus- Police, Courts, Prisons (force/control through punishment)
2. Ideological State Apparatus- Schools, Media, Religion, Family (force/control through belief/ideology)

In terms of ideological control, Althusser describes schools as the primary ideological instrument of our current society. Children spend almost all of their waking hours in school learning the value of discipline, obedience, punctuality and respect for authority. In essence, schools provide children with the skills necessary to be productive, obidient members of society and the tools to understand the social hierarchy of society.

Ideology is a more effective mechanism of control than violence alone. People are willing to adapt to the norms of society because they believe that authority figures have legitimate authority and that working long hours without complaint is the norm and that inequality is a inevitable aspect of society.

he also illustrate that schools function in the same manner as churches in past societies which is educating citizens on what to believe and how to act.As adults these values and norms become natural to us.

Therefore, Althusser’s central argument is that Ideology provides the social structure with the support it needs to continue functioning by shaping the thought process of society and thereby legitimizing existing structures of power and control over people, in lieu of relying solely on punishment
