  1. A Repressive State Apparatus is a part of the government that maintains order through force or the threat of punishment. Althusser calls it repressive because it can control people through laws or punishment.
  1. Ideological State Apparatuses are institutions that influence the way people think and what they believe is normal. Examples include schools, religion, family, and the media.
  1. The difference between the two is Repressive State Apparatuses control people mainly through force and punishment and Ideological State Apparatuses influence people through ideas and beliefs.
  1. Platos allegory of the cave is example of an ideological apparatus. It shows how what people are exposed to can shape what they believe to be reality.

Quinton Rich- Repressive and ideology how are they different

1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Give an example.

A Repressive State Apparatus is parts of the government that keeps order by using force, punishment, or the threat of punishment. Althusser calls it “repressive” because these institutions can force people to follow laws and rules even if they dont agree with them. Some examples are the police, courts, prisons, and the military. For example, if someone breaks the law, the police can arrest them and the court can sentence them to jail. This shows how the state can use force and punishment to control certain behavior.

2. What are Ideological State Apparatuses? How do they work?

Ideological State Apparatuses are institutions that influence how people think and what they believe instead of mainly using force. Some examples are schools, churches, families, the media, and even entertainment. They work by teaching people certain values, beliefs, and ideas about what is considered normal or acceptable in society. For example, schools dont just teach math and English, they also teach students things like following rules, being on time, and respecting authority.

3. How are Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other?

The biggest difference is how they control or influence people. Repressive State Apparatuses mainly work through force, laws, and punishment, while Ideological State Apparatuses mainly work through ideas and beliefs. For example, the police can physically arrest someone for breaking the law, which would be repressive. A school or the media can influence how someone thinks about laws and society, which would be ideological. Both can help maintain order, but they do it in different ways.

4. Post an example of ideology and say whether it is repressive or ideological.

One example of ideology could be a military recruitment commercial. The commercial may show joining the military as honorable, brave, and a way to serve your country. I would consider this an example of an Ideological State Apparatus because the commercial is not forcing anyone to join. Instead, it is using images, messages, and certain values to influence how people think about military service. It can make people connect joining the military with things like pride, success, and patriotism.

Rhandol De La Cruz – State Apparatus

A repressive State Apparatus is part of the government that keeps order mainly through rules, Authority, laws, or force. Althusser calls it “repressive” because it can force people to follow rules instead of simply convincing them.

A good example would be the prison system. If someone breaks the law, the state can take away that persons freedom and place them in jail, this forces people to do good even though they may want to do things that breaks the rules.

An Ideological State Apparatus works in a different way. Instead of controlling people through punishment, it affects the way people learn values beliefs and expectations about life. Things like family, religion, TV and social media can all affect how someone sees the world, For example, social media can make people believe that popularity, money, or appearance are signs of being succesful.

To me, the main difference is that one uses direct power, while the other works more through ideas.

If a police officer arrest someone, that is direct power being used. But if a person grows up hearing certain messages from family, TV and social media, those messages can influence the way they think without anyone physically forcing them.

For my example, I would use an advertisement showing a person with an expensive car, designer clothes, and a large house. The advertisement sends the message that having expensive things means you have made it in life. I would call this an Ideological State because advertising influences how people define success without forcing them to believe it and even if they have different views that oppose each other. One person can think just being happy means you are successful while the other can think materialistic things is what makes success.

1. An RSA is the part of government that makes people follow rules by using force or punishment. Althusser calls it repressive because it holds people back or punishes them when they step out of line, instead of just guiding their thinking. For example: police, courts, prisons, the military. Like if people are blocking a highway during a protest, the police come and force them to move them.

2.ISAs are institutions that shape how we think and act, but without using force. They work through ideas, values, and beliefs, making certain behaviors feel normal. Because of this, we follow along on our own without anyone forcing us. For example: Schools, family, media, social media, religion.

3.RSA uses force, punishment, and law. ISA uses ideas, beliefs, and values. RSA is only public government institutions. ISA is a mix of public and private. RSA steps in after someone breaks a rule. ISA shapes how we think before we ever break a rule. Actually, RSA controls through fear, ISA controls through shaping what feels normal.

4.Example of ideology :A movie or show that always shows police as heroes and criminals as pure bad guys with no context about poverty or unfair systems. Apparatus is an Ideological State Apparatus media. It shapes how people think about crime and justice by making us support harsh punishment without questioning why crime happens in the first place, making the system feel fair and normal even when it isn’t.

  1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus? Why does Althusser call it “repressive”? Can we explain his choice of words here. Give an example.

An oppressive state apparatus is a direct form of discipline that punishes people for falling out of line such as the police, the military, and any other disciplinary institution. Repressive is defined as  “controlling people by force.” (The Britannica dictionary) which coincides with Althusser’s definition of repressive state apparatus.

2. Let’s do the same for the Ideological State Apparatuses. What are they, how do they seem to work?

Ideological state apparatus is a much more indirect method of keeping people in check. ideological state apparatus uses education, culture, and religion to make you believe and accept society’s rules.

3. Important: this question will appear on our exam: How are the Repressive and Ideological State Apparatuses different from each other? What is the difference between the two?

Ideological state apparatus and Repressive state apparatus are two very different forms of keeping people in line with society. Repressive uses a more forceful approach, while ideological uses a more persuasive and mental manipulative approach. ideological state apparatus is more obligatory because of the concept and ideas that are taught in school are forced upon us and if we don’t comply we learn from a young age that there will be consequences to not conforming

4. Post an example of ideology. This could be a piece of writing, an image, video, pdf document, visual art, or music, clip from a movie. Next to your example, specify if this is an example of repressive or ideological apparatuses at work. I’ll start us of off by giving an example

Jamison Jimenez – State Apparatus

What Is RSA ?

A repressive state apparatus is something the government uses to control people, usually through rules, punishment, or force.

Althusser calls it ” repressive” because it can make people follow the law even if they do not agree with it. Like police, courts, prisons, and the military.

For example, the police can arrest someone for breaking the law.

What is Isa ?

Ideological state apparatuses are things like school, families, churches, the media, and other organizations that influence the way people think and act. They work by teaching people certain beliefs, values, and ideas about how society should work. For example school teaches students rules and behaviors that are expected in society.

RSA vs ISA

The main difference is how they control people. Repressive state apparatuses mainly use laws, punishment, or force to make people follow rules. Ideological state apparatuses mainly use ideas, beliefs, and values to influence people. For example, the police can punish someone for breaking a law, while a school can teach students why following rules is important.

Example of ISA

This image symbolizes time and discipline meaning it requires students to attend classes on time and complete assignments, and to follow rules.

Shuqi Yu — State Apparatus

1. What is RSA?

  • A repressive state apparatus refers to the state institutions that maintain social order mainly through violence or punishment, such as the police, military and prison.
  • Althusser calls it “repressive” because these institutions can control or punish people when they don’t follow the rules.
  • EXAMPLE: When people protest against the government’s policies, the government can send in the police to disperse the crowds, arrest the protesters, and even impose penalties through the law.

2. What is ISA?

  • Ideology state apparatus refers to institutions like schools, families, churches and the media that can shape how people think and behave.
  • Althusser calls it “ideological” because they influence people by shaping their beliefs and values rather than mainly using force. It can change one’s thoughts unconsciously.
  • EXAMPLE: Social media and advertisements can influence what people think is fashionable or attractive by constantly promoting certain clothes, lifestyles, and beauty standards. people may start following these trends because they believe they are desirable.

3. RSA VS ISA

The main difference between RSA and ISA is how they make people follow the social system. RSA uses force, control, or punishment through institutions like the police, military, courts, and prisons, while ISA uses ideas and beliefs through institutions like schools, families, and the media. All in all, RSA makes people obey because they have to, while ISA makes people obey because they believe certain values and behaviors are normal.

4. Example of ISA

It’s a picture of ISA. The clock in the center of the image symbolizes the school’s demands for time and discipline, requiring students to attend classes on time, complete assignments, and follow rules. These daily educational practices influence students’ thinking and behavior gradually. It make students adapt to society’s rules and structures.

What is a Repressive State Apparatus?

A repressive state apparatus (RSA) is the state mechanisms that enforces social order, protects ruling class interests, and suppresses dissent through coercion, violence, or threats to personal wellbeing. Althusser uses the word repressive purposely, because this apparatus operates by physically containing, restraining and punishing individuals who violate established order. It doesn’t rely on convincing the individual to agree, it forces you to comply whether you agree or not. Examples include the police, military, court systems, and prisons.

What is an Ideological State Apparatus?

Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) are the institutions that maintain social order and reproduce the conditions being broadcast through ideology, cultural values and socialization. Whereas the RSAs are political in nature serving the government, ISAs serve in a more private or civil sphere. Some examples are education, religion, family dynamics and the media. ISAs function primarily on interpellation. They provide values and identities so that people internalize the rules voluntarily. Rather than being forced to comply, people are more obedient because they believe they are acting on free will, rather than coercion.

Differences between RSAs and ISAs

We can explore a few different criterias in order to identify the difference between the two apparatuses.

Primary Mechanism

-RSAs operate primarily by violence, force and legal coercion

-ISAs operate by ideology and consent. Physical coercion is present however it is not primary, and often does not come with violence as a punishment

Unity

-RSAs identify under a single unified often state controlled apparatus

-ISAs have multiple decentralized institutions spread across society

Enforcement Style

-RSAs rely on external compliance, forcing your body to comply through punitive consequences

-ISAs shape internal beliefs, forcing individuals to use their conscience to govern ourselves voluntarily.

Example of Ideology

This apparatus type is an ISA. It operates under the Cultural ISA. It calls upon patriotism to enlist into the Army, giving pride and sense of self to protect and serve the country.

Althusser and State Apparatus

1. What is a Repressive State Apparatus (RSA)?

A Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) is the part of the government that forces people to follow rules using laws, force, or punishment.

Althusser uses the word “repressive” because these groups work by holding people back, punishing them, or using physical force. When someone breaks the law or steps out of line, the RSA uses force to put things back in order.

  • Example: The police, military, courts, and prisons. For instance, if people are protesting on a highway without permission, the police show up to physically move or arrest them.

2. What are Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs)?

Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) are institutions that teach us how to think, behave, and fit into society. They don’t use physical force. Instead, they use ideas, values, and traditions.

ISAs work by getting us to accept the way things are naturally. They make everyday rules feel like regular “common sense” so we follow along on our own without anyone having to force us.

  • Examples: Schools, family, churches, social media, news, and movies.

3. Key Differences Between RSA and ISA

The main differences between the two come down to force vs. ideas:

Repressive State Apparatus (RSA)Ideological State Apparatus (ISA)
How it worksUses force, law, and punishment.Uses ideas, values, and beliefs.
Where it isStrictly public government institutions.Mix of public and private (family, schools, media).
When it actsSteps in after someone breaks a rule.Shapes how we think before we ever break a rule.

(Althusser mentions that RSAs use a little bit of ideology and ISAs use a little bit of discipline, but their main job is what sets them apart).

4. Example of Ideology

  • Example: An ad on social media showing a student staying up all night drinking coffee to study and work two jobs, with a caption saying “Keep grinding, no excuses.”
  • Apparatus: This is an Ideological State Apparatus (ISA) (media/culture). It spreads the idea that burnout is just part of working hard, making us blame ourselves instead of questioning why things are so stressful or expensive in the first place
