ENG101: The Research Essay

ENG101: The Research Essay

“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” -Zora Neale Hurston

Assignment under construction. Students will have written two essays prior to this assignment (and potentially written a mid-term exam essay).

OBJECTIVES: Consider your narrative on family and identity, inspired/informed by the essays by Amy Tan and Jennine Capo Crucet. Or think about your argument about truth and illusion, knowledge and ignorance, or justice and injustice in response to Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and in Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (and potentially one more mid-term essay topic to be added here). Referring to the assigned readings and sources from your own research for a total of three sources minimum, you will write a research essay to deepen one of your essay assignments. This deeper dive could include images, video, audio, interviews….

PROCESS: Be sure to include a mix of sources from the assigned readings and your own research for a minimum of three sources to support your argument (and/or refute your counterargument) and to further analyze your topic.

YOU MUST ALSO REFER to at least ONE outside source from your research.
