Week 4 – Emergent Literacy – Nusret Ullah
1.How does oral storytelling support emergent literacy in a culturally responsive curriculum? Be specific. Explain how storytelling supports (a) understanding of words, (b) symbolic representation, and (c) pretend play.
- Oral storytelling supports emergent literacy in a culturally responsive curriculum because educator you are able to use both together. Which mean you can have a book that explains a lot of different things that goes with your curriculum. For example, if your curriculum is about different black history month, and you find a book about the history of black history month.
2.Describe two strategies you would use to incorporate oral storytelling into your classroom.
- Two strategies I would use to incorporate oral story telling into my classroom would be first, I would give short breaks during lessons where students can tell each other stories in groups as I listen. Secondly, I would lead by example by telling them my stories too and dedicating some lessons to pure storytelling.
3.Describe two components of an effective language arts program and explain how you would incorporate these strategies into your classroom.
- The two components in the affected langue arts program I would use read-aloud that are a part of our lessons and activities. Also, use diverse reading so every child that comes into my classroom will always feel safe and welcomed. Also, help everyone share a part of their culture.
I am Poem – Nusret Ullah
I am from Harlem Manhattan, where at day time, music is around ever corner of street. You will see graffiti on walls but I see art. When it become night time the lights of building lit up like sparkle stars. The police sirens goes off and ambulances race time to save someone life.
I am also from the roaring and dangerous Bronx. Everyday you will see a police officers stopping an innocence person from their day assuming their are up to no good. I am from the Bronx, where you cant tell you hear fireworks or a gun shoot outside your window.
I am from religious, and conservative family. Where my voice doesnt really matter as much, and the only thing I can do Is listen to everything my oldest say. I am from where my life isnt really my life that my parent plan everything out for me. The only thing I can do is rebel against them.
Family Heritage – Nusret Ullah

The family artifacts I chose was my grandfather’s watch which is special in my family because this is the only thing we have that belong to him after he passed away. My grandfather was many things, a father, a grandfather, and a teacher. He was an amazing person. We got this watch right after most of his belong was put away in a storage in Bangladesh. He lived till he was 78, and he was also a college professor as well. We had this watch for almost 20 years, but my grandfather had this watch for all his life.
What is Culturally Responsive Teaching ?
Culturally Responsive Teaching is acknowledging as an educator that students are not blank slates. Children have been learning since in the womb, they have been socializing with their families and environments , and have been adopting to their culture. By knowing this an educator will strive to be inclusive for all students and they will understand that there is no right or wrong way of doing things but there is a culture’s way of doing things.
Self Portrait – Nusret Ullah

I try to make a portrait of me. If you can see I wear glasses and I have birth mark on the bottom of my lips and the side of my side of my face. I use color pencils, so I have blue shirt on with a necklace I got from my dad. It say Tesha which is my nickname, and he got it from Bangladesh. Someone ask me once what’s my favorite feature about myself and I said my hair so that something you know about me.
What is Curriculum ? – Nusret Ullah
A curriculum is an organizing program that is made by the teacher heneforce on what they are planning to teach the kids. Also it plans how the learning is going to be and making sure the kids get the best education.
Teachers need to consider when designing curriculum is making sure they are different activities that go with the plan, and making sure it’s safe for the kids. Involving different styles based on different cultures and the world. Not every kid is the same and they have to make sure the plan fits with the kids.
Curriculum can be designed to support the children different learning modalities by learning different style that would be best fit for the child. For example if a child best learn by pictures then we do an activity that has to do with pictures.
The elements of curriculum I notice in the All About Me thematic curriculum unit are different cultures and backgrounds. Each sub theme supports the essential question of the curriculum in , “ What makes Me Me” because to understand their background and transition.
