Weekly Assignments and Seminar Projects
It has been disheartening, week after week to review the weekly assignments and seminar projects and note how few members of our class community are completing all the required work.
We are now entering the 5th week of a 14-week semester. This week, only one student completed the seminar project (Storytelling) and only two students completed the curriculum web assignment. Three students have not yet submitted the draft of the thematic curriculum plan, which was due two weeks ago on September 12. Without my feedback on that draft plan, you cannot complete any of the follow-up curriculum web assignments.
That is unacceptable. Weekly assignments and seminar projects are due each week. These assignments are meant to be shared each week with the class community. Each time you do not complete an assignment, you lose points. It may not seem like much at the time, but it will add up. As of now, there is no one in the class who has completed all the assignments to date.
Please note that your final grade will reflect the work that you have done throughout the semester. I will not accept a slew of assignments and seminar projects completed in a rush at the end of the semester.
Each seminar project, and many of the weekly assignments are designed to help you complete the Curriculum Web and Activity Plan assignment. If you do not complete this work during the semester, it will be reflected in the quality and the grade of that final project.

Understanding Creativity

This week we will explore the central question “What is creativity ?”
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Define creativity in multiple ways.
- Explain the link between creativity and learning.
- Design a dance/creative movement activity related to your curriculum.
Seminar Project: Cloud Collage
Read: Introducing Collage to Young Children
Watch:
Now it’s time to create.
Materials:
- Collage materials: Collect any materials from around your house that can be used to collage
- Paint (optional). Watercolor or tempera.
- Background paper: You can create collage on any surface. It can be a white sheet of paper, colored construction paper, cardboard, wood…
- Glue or tape
- Scissors (optional). You can also tear if you prefer.
Create
- Look up at the sky and take some time to notice the clouds.
- Make a list of descriptive words to describe the clouds.
- Make a collage of sky and clouds.
Take a picture of your art work and post it here. Write a brief paragraph describing how you would “spark” students’ learning for this activity.
Articulating Learning Goals, Objectives and Assessments
Observing and documenting children’s learning and growth is the primary way that teachers evaluate their students’ understanding. Through these ongoing assessments teachers learn how to plan lessons to meet students’ needs and support their growth.
This week, you will continue working on your Activity Plan, revising and refining your essential questions, objectives, learning goals and standards, and assessment strategies.
Use the New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards to select benchmarks (standards that can be measured) for the Standards/Goals section of your Activity Plan. You need to plan learning activities that will guide students to achieve the standards. Remember, all children learn and grow at their own pace, so the learning activities should include differentiated strategies to scaffold children at different stages of development.
Read:
- Goals, Objectives and Assessment powerpoint
- Jablon, et al (2011) Powerful Interactions: A Bridge Between Teaching and Assessment
- Basics of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, pp. 47-55
- Nurturing Creativity, Chapter 8
Take notes on how to frame your learning activity through the essential questions, goals and objectives. Think about the different strategies you can use to document children’s learning.
