Hi Holly: This thematic unit reflects our class discussions and I see that you have made some additional changes, as well. It looks really good at this point. It is interesting and developmentally appropriate. Each sub-topic has great depth and could be explored over a week or two.

    A few thoughts and comments:

    1. Don’t forget to include to title of your thematic unit (Food) on your planning sheet.

    2. I think the organization of the sub-topics has a good flow, starting from the children’s lived experience and building upon it. The first sub-topic (what we eat/what people around the world eat) has lots of possibilities for books and activities.

    3. In sub-topic 3, I think the focus on healthy and unhealthy foods is excellent. It would be better in your final topic question to use the term health, rather than medicine, e.g., How can foods help us to stay healthy and help our bodies heal. The definition of medicine is too specific.

    4. Sub-topic 4 on food waste/decomposition is a really interesting direction for this thematic unit, and leads very naturally into the final sub-topic on activism (how to help people who are hungry). Depending upon where you are teaching, it is very possible that there might be families/children in your class/school who do not have enough to eat. How will you address that?
