  1. 1) In my family there is myself, My Daughter, My Mother, My Father, My Step dad, and Step Mother.
    2) I think family is considered to be people who you love and care for it doesn’t have have to necessarily be some one your blood related to.
3)My teachers didn’t have a relationship with my family . They only contacted my parents when something was wrong or if it was a parent teacher conference to discuss my grades. At the time it didn’t bother me but looking back i can see how a better relationship between my family and teachers would have benefited me.
    4) Taking online classes has taught me that I need to work on my time management. Online classes gives you a lot of freedom and I need to work on making a schedule for myself.

    1. Brittney — Thanks for your post in this activity. Family is who we bring into our lives who are close to us. I wonder, how would your education have been different if your family had a close relationship with your teachers?

  2. 1) I consider my family to be my mom, dad, uncle, my godmothers and godsisters, my aunts, and my cousins.
    2) For me, I think that family is people that are always there for you regardless if they are biologically or extended or just friends.
    3) The staff in my school didn’t really do anything to build relationships with anyone other than my mother and uncle because my mother is my primary caregiver and my uncle would all come to all the school events. This kind of impact on me because it made me determined to stay on top of my grades and not get in situations that could cause me to get in trouble.
    4) The strategies that I identified in Module 1 have been going well. I have to manage my time efficiently. I have been able to get all of my work done before the due date. However, I need to learn how to not overwhelm myself. I need to learn how to focus one assignment at a time.

    1. Diamunique — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Family is who we bring into our lives to be close to us. I wonder, how would your education have been different if your family had a close relationship with your teachers? What time management strategies are you thinking about trying?

  3. 1. Who is in your family? My mother, my father, my grandmothers, my uncles, my aunts, and my cousins.
    2. How do you define family? I believe that family is the people you love and will always be there for you.
    3. What did the staff in the schools you attended (pre-K through high school) do to build relationships with all members of your family — not just your parents/ guardians? How did that impact you? How did it impact your family’s connection to your teachers/ school? My school staff did not have a relationship with my family members, the only contact they had was for report cards or if something was wrong.
    4. How are the strategies you identified in Module 1 working? What is going well? What may need to be changed? What have you learned about yourself as a student in an online class? The strategies I identified in Module 1 are working well. I have been able to post my work on time and focus on my class work. I have learned about myself as a student in an online class that I can manage my time very well.

    1. Daniela — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Permanency is a key element of family. I wonder, how would your education have been different if your family had a close relationship with your teachers? Can you share what strategies are working well — others might appreciate hearing what works!

  4. 1.In my family it is My mom, stepdad, 3 young brother’s, 2 sister’s
2.I define family as people I care for and have been there for me always through thick and thin always encouraging me.
3.As I remember about my pre-k to high school school staff they really didn’t communicate as much with my parents to build a relationship, only one teacher Mr.G he would be concerned when I look a bit upset and he would ask a lot of questions and call my mom to make sure everything was okay home.So I’m guessing the way Mr.G would connect with my parents would be to observe the children expressions and feelings be relatable.
4.What I learned as an online student is that you have a lot of time in your hands but you have to be able to manage it correctly which is difficult at times because of work schedule’s and another responsibilities.

    1. Lesly — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Family is people who stand by you. I wonder, how would your education have been different if all your teachers were like Mr. G and had a close relationship with your family? Juggling all of your responsibilities while taking classes online is tough.

  5. 1. My family is my father, my mother, my sisters, my brothers, my husband, and kids.
    2. I define family as love, safety, and acceptance.
    3. My teachers and my family never had any communications. The only time they communicate is if I am doing bad in school.
    4. Online classes have their cons and pros, to me personally I learned to be organized, to not procrastinate, and to motivate myself. The thing I need to work on is time management. I also want to work on not getting sidetracked when I am doing my work.

    1. Elizabeth — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Having love and feeling safe and accepted by your family is important! I wonder, how would your education have been different if your family had a close relationship with your teachers? It is easy to get distracted while working from home.

  6. 1.-Who is in your family?
I have a big family, my father, my mother, my two sisters and my older brother. My brother and I live in USA, and the rest of my family lives in Ecuador. I got married 4 years ago and my new family is my husband, we do not have kids yet.

    2.-How do you define family?
Family is a group of people related to each other, who love and care for each other. In most of the cases they live together in the same household. However, there are families who live separate because of different situations.

3.- What did the staff in the schools you attended (pre-K through high school) do to build relationships with all members of your family — not just your parents/ guardians? How did that impact you? How did it impact your family’s connection to your teachers/ school?
Back in Ecuador, when I attended pre-K through high school, building relationships was not a priority for the staff in my school. My school was huge the biggest of the city, there were like 4o students in each classroom. Parents only saw the teachers at the end of every trimester in order to keep the parents updated with our work in school, or in special occasions such as Christmas or Children’s day.

4.-How are the strategies you identified in Module 1 working? What is going well? What may need to be changed? What have you learned about yourself as a student in an online class?
I think some of the strategies have been working well. I am still working on my plan in order to balance all my courses as well as doing my homework on time. My strategy about engaging deeply with the courses are doing well. At the beginning was very hard for me because it was my first time using Open Lab. However, the syllabus, contain a wealth of information in order to support my success in ECE 209, I feel very happy with the progress I had made. Finally, I have been using a big board, in which I write down the assignments and the due dates.

    1. Marcela — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Family can be people who live together or far apart. I wonder, how would your education have been different if your family had a close relationship with your teachers? I look forward to hearing about your experiences in Ecuador. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns with OpenLab.

  7. 1) The people that are in my family are my mom, dad, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

    2) I define family as people that are going to be there to support you and do anything they can to make life a little bit easier. They will have your back, no matter what happens.

3)The staff at the schools I attended made a relationship with my family by having curriculum night, events life science fairs, art shows, sporting events, parents night, gala’s, fund raisers, keeping in touch with parents through emails. This impacted me because my parents were really close with most of my teachers. They all worked together like my team to try and talk about anything that I was having trouble with, at home and or in school to try and “fix” so that I would be able to do my best in school and in life. I think it impacted my parent’s connection to the school by making them feel included with everything that I was doing in school. It made them feel like they were a part of my education as well.

    4) I think some of the strategies are working and others aren’t. I’m doing the best that I can to maintain motivation to do my school work. I have learned that classes online aren’t for me. I need to be a student that is in the actual classroom. I get too distracted at home and am unmotivated to work. When I’m in a classroom I feel like I’m more productive at being a student and learning in general.

      1. Hi Zoe,

I definitely agree with you on your family definition because, just like Shemella said “someone can be blood related to you and not have your best interests at heart.” But I also think that family can be anyone, they can be friends you live with or even a cousin, aunt, foster mom etc.. depending on the relationship status of your parents .

    1. Zoe — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Support from our family helps us to be successful in life! It sounds like your family was very involved in your education and school events; I wonder, is there a difference between families having a relationship with school staff and being involved in school events? Working from home is distracting. I wonder, what specific time management strategies are working and not working?

  8. 1. My family consist of myself, mother, father, three older bothers, one younger sisters, along with my nieces, nephews, and grandparents.
    2. A family is the people who genuine love, care, support and have your best interest at heart. Don’t have to be blood related, can also be a pet too.
    3. The staff in the schools I’ve attended, had open school night /day where the parents and teachers can meet. PTA meetings where the parents have in put on certain things within the programs. The programs I was didn’t do much to include other family members other than parents or guardians. In a way it impacted me a little negatively because it was easier to get way with things.
    4. The strategies I’ve identified in Module 1 has been working thus far. I still have a little problem with procrastinating. As a online student I’ve learnt the importance of sticking to and managing time.

    1. Mel — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Pets can be part of our family — we love them and they love us! It sounds like your schools had different events for families; I wonder, how did those events foster relationships between your teachers and family?

    2. Mel — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Pets can be part of our family — we love them and they love us back! It sounds like your schools had different events for families; I wonder, how did those events foster relationships between your teachers and family?

  9. 1-Who is in your family?
The people who are in my family are my mom, my sister, my brother, my boyfriend, his mom, dad and both of his brothers also my dog.

    2-How do you define family?
I define family as people who will be there to protect you, love you, and support you in life. Family is people who care about you.

3-What did the staff in the schools you attended (pre-K through high school) do to build relationships with all members of your family — not just your parents/ guardians? How did that impact you? How did it impact your family’s connection to your teachers/ school?
The schools I’ve attended in pre-k would tell my parents good things about me but throughout elementary and high school they did not try to build a relationship. This did not impact me at all because I would tell my mom what i did in school and she would tell me to keep on going and do better in school. It impacted my family’s connection with my teachers because they wouldn’t tell her anything about me only on parent teacher conference.

4-How are the strategies you identified in Module 1 working? What is going well? What may need to be changed? What have you learned about yourself as a student in an online class?
The strategies I identified in Module is sort of working. I still tend to procrastinate a lot, taking online classes has taught me that i need to manage time to do homework.

    1. Madelin — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Families offer us protection. I appreciate your insights about your teachers “telling” your family information but not forming a relationship with your family. A relationship requires a give & take on both parties.

  10. 1.Who is in your family?
In my family, it’s myself, my parents and my 3 brothers. My aunts, uncles, my cousins, my nieces and nephews, my close friends and also my dog.
    2.How do you define family?
Family is knowing your love ones are there for you and love you unconditionally. Does not have to be blood related.
    3. What did the staff in the schools you attended (pre-K through high school) do to build relationships with all members of your family — not just your parents/ guardians? How did that impact you? How did it impact your family’s connection to your teachers/ school?
The staff that worked at the school I have attended would talk to my parents when it was parent teacher conference or when we had shows for music or dance class. My middle school and high school teachers would tell my friends to tell me that I had to make up homework or show up for class so I would be able to pass. My parents would be in contact with my guidance counselor so they could be updated with my grades and they would be inform if I attended class or not. I think it impacted me in a positive way because when they would tell me I had to do my assignments and catch up I realized if I kept doing the things I was doing I would not have been able to graduate. My parents and teachers had a good relationship because they would talk about my improvements.
    4. How are the strategies you identified in Module 1 working? What is going well? What may need to be changed? What have you learned about yourself as a student in an online class?
The strategies I identified in Module 1 is working so far, I got myself a planner and printed out the course guide to keep myself on track. I still procrastinate but I have managed to sneak in some more time into my schedule. I need to set a timer when it’s time to do homework at home because I get distracted with Netflix. I learned that online classes are not for me because I get distracted easily and being in a classroom is better because it helps me grasp onto things and being able to ask the professor questions right there and having them answered instead of waiting 2-3 days to get a reply back(expect for you Professor).

    1. Brenda — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Unconditional love is an important component of families. Your describe the school staff telling your family info; I wonder, did you family share ideas with the school staff? What type of planner did you get?

  11. 1.Who is in your family? In my family I have my parents, My mom and my Dad and my dog Luna

2.How do you define family? In my opinion I think family is defined as the people you live with or grow up with to love, support and be your caregiver.

3.What did the staff in the schools you attended (pre-K through high school) do to build relationships with all members of your family — not just your parents/ guardians? How did that impact you? How did it impact your family’s connection to your teachers/ school? When I attended my years of schooling the staff helped family and students unite in group projects, events, school trips, counseling, and Parent teacher conferences. As I got to high school I made a lot of wrong decisions with the group of friends I used to have and started lacking in my school work so I ended up not getting help from any teachers because of it. Two of my teachers constantly reminded me how eventually, before I knew it I will be 25 and that it was important for me to finish school. This impacted me because I pushed myself to complete my high school years despite what others thought about me and if it wasn’t for the only two teachers who I adore dearly I wouldn’t be where I am so I thank them for pushing me when others wouldn’t. This impacted my family’s connection when they found out how much I improved in my school work.

4.How are the strategies you identified in Module 1 working? What is going well? What may need to be changed? What have you learned about yourself as a student in an online class? The strategies in Module 1 are working very well. I have a planner and a file cabinet to remind/ store all my assignments so I can look back at. I do have days where I procrastinate but then I push myself to open up my Laptop and start working on my assignments. I have learned that I do like online classes but I think that in-person classes would suit me better because I do procrastinate a lot at home and feel that I would get work done in school before I get home. I would also have access to all faculty on campus to discuss any personal matters in person.

    1. Selanie — Thanks for your comment in this activity. Families grow together. It sounds like your family attended your school events & you had teachers that had an impact on your life; I wonder, how would your education have been different if your teachers and family were in close communication?

  12. 1) In my family there is myself, My brothers, My Mother, My Father.
    2) I think family is considered to be people who you love and care for, it doesn’t have to necessarily be someone your blood is related to.
    3) My teachers didn’t have a relationship with my family only during parent teacher conference. They would have definitely had a better relationship with them.
    4) Taking online classes has taught me that I need to work on my time management. Online classes give you a lot of freedom and I need to work on making a schedule for myself.

    1. Julissa — Thanks for your comment in this activity. I wonder, what do you mean when you say, “they would have definitely had a better relationship with them”; can you explain what you mean in more detail? How would the relationships have been better? Online classes do offer freedom for students — which can be a benefit for some people and a challenge for others.
