LinkedIn

My Take Away from the Expert Session with Annie and Tiffany

My biggest takeaways from the expert session with Annie and Tiffany is the importance of LinkedIn in the current times where everything is going digital and also some important pointers to apply during interviews.

This session has helped me understand that a LinkedIn profile is not like a common social media profile even though it looks like one. A LinkedIn profile should be professional as it helps to speak about your to potential clients or employers. The profile should have a nice photo of you noting that this should not necessarily be a serious photo, a smiling face is more attractive and it attracts people to view your profile. I have also learnt that my LinkedIn profile should be constantly updated with recent personal contacts and also with recent professional progress.

In regard to interviews, one of my greatest take away from this session was the importance of being honest to the interviewer because they do not expect you to be perfect or t know everything. I have learnt that when you are honest, you have confidence and you are able to answer any questions that the interviewers have. I have also learnt that it is always important never to rush for an interview, always take time to prepare for an interviewconsidering the perspective of the interviewer.  This means that you research on the organisation offering you a job and some of the expected interview questions for the position that you are applying for. When an individual is well prepared for an interview, they are confident and find it much easier to answer interview questions.

This expert session with Annie and Tiffany has really been educative for me and it will help me become a better in my profession.

LinkedIn Assignment

I learned quite a bit from Annie and Tiffany. One of the most important things that I learned was the importance of both having and constantly updating a LinkedIn page. I never thought of it as a necessity, but I learned that in these times, it is pertinent for not only job seekers, but also those looking to network. I learned that a lot of recruiting is done through LinkedIn as well. In terms of things that personally help me with my page, I learned that even though I strive to be an entrepreneur, it is still vital that I include that information in my summary because it can spark interest from potential partners and investors. I also learned that not everything should be super professional. I should let a little bit of my personality shine through on my page to give people an idea of what type of person I am rather than trying to make it a resume.

I am glad that I got to learn about LinkedIn from Annie and Tiffany. Anne helped me understand what techniques we can use to make our LinkedIn standout from others. She also explained how a resume and LinkedIn account are different. I got to learn that we should not over write about our self, but write about necessary things such as what kind of jobs we are interested in or what kind of audience we are trying to attract. I also learned that we should include key words/ skills in our summary which are related to the job we are looking for. This way, it can be easier to find jobs that are suitable for you. Moreover, Tiffany also gave some useful tips which we should know. They include not providing extra information about yourself, and some ways that can help us prepare for interviews and what to expect from the employer.

I created LinkedIn last semester but I never got the opportunity to learn more about it. I am glad that I got this opportunity to make my account better.

Unit 4 LinkedIn assignment

Thank you professor for introducing us to Annie and Tiffany and for allowing them to provide us with so much knowledge that we can use to further our career. Annie showed me the proper way to write in the “about yourself” category which I always struggled with. I never know if I am putting too little or too much information and she provided me with the knowledge I need to complete that section and feel secure about what I wrote. What I took from Tiffany was a little similar to what I learned from Annie which is not to provide unnecessary information. Tiffany told me that it is certain things that an employer can’t ask you and that we shouldn’t provide them with more information that they need to know. I’ve had my LinkedIn page for quite some time but I never went back to actually complete my profile and with all the great information that I received from the live session I felt confident in going back and actually completing my profile with the intent to use it.

Unit 4 – Planning, Recruiting & Selection

Expert Session: LinkedIn & Spotify

The expert session with Anne & Tiffany was much appreciated. It provided real-world feedback & advice. Following are some of my key takeaways from each speaker:

Anne S.-

Annie’s experience at LinkedIn and her slides were very informative and provided quick data snapshots about LinkedIn. First, LinkedIn is a Professional Social Media site consisting of 700m members, 30m companies, 20m Jobs, 36k skills, 90k schools 280b knowledge. Including a new 2020 stat, that LinkedIn is the largest professional News Hub online – there’s more traffic & news stories being posted on LinkedIn than anywhere on the web  -wow!

Annie helped to differentiate your LinkedIn profile versus your resume. Your LinkedIn profile is typically written to just about everybody, speaks to all potential employees & can include skills, projects to show your experience & can even contain your recommendations & endorsements. Where as your resume is written for the job you’re applying to.

Annie shared some other interesting stats from LinkedIn, on the other number one place that users look to on your profile, after your picture, is your headline-the little bit of text under your name.

Annie shared her profile & the five-sentence rule technique on writing a concise profile.

Tiffany S.-

Tiffany’s experience as a technical recruiter at Spotify was very helpful in her advice on how to prepare, plan, approach applying for a position and the interview process.

Tiffany’s advice on asking yourself the right questions was useful, for example:

What opportunities compliment your strengths – market yourself, Advocating for yourself.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced when interviewing.

Look at the company culture & ask yourself – is this company going to match me.

Understanding the importance of using the right buzz-words & having the right skillset.

Being prepared to indicate your Initiative- your ability to self manage and being Coachable – ready to learn & grow.

The session helped me in this unit to revisit my LinkedIn profile. Understand techniques on how to better plan & prepare when applying for a position and some insights on the recruitment process organization’s hiring managers look for, in attracting qualified people to form an applicant pool.

My biggest take away from the live session with Annie and Tiffany was, Annie’s tip about marketing your authentic self with Tiffany’s tip about having pictures that represent you as a person yet still keeping in mind that from am EEOC perspective, when you are interviewing you shouldn’t mention your kids. Also hiring managers shouldn’t ask if you have children or if you’re married. So be sure not to offer that information in your profile picture on LinkedIn. I appreciated the fact that Professor Buckler also added that hiring managers are not supposed to ask about your current salary either. This is due to the fact that many times employer will make biased assumptions against you based on the information applicants give prospective employers volunteering information to questions that the prospective employers wasn’t even allowed to ask. All of the information they provided was very valuable and besides what I mentioned above I was also very surprised to hear that we ought not limit ourselves to a one page resume. I left the live session very enthusiastic about my job search endeavors and will used the information provided constructively. Besides the information that Professor Buckler and her colleagues provided I also appreciated the transparency of many of our classmates who I felt asked questions and discussed topics that other people might have been afraid to talk about. That was a great session !

LinkedIn Unit 04 Assignment

The live session that Professor B. Buckler had initiated on the 23rd was very informative. For an individual that had a LinkedIn profile since the beginning of college, I’ve heard a lot of Dos and Donts gurus. Such as keeping your profile minimal as possible is good! Having keywords and attention getters makes your profile stands out! But, hearing from what our guest speakers and what they look for in an individual were mind-blowing. Ever since then, I’ve been making some slight adjustments to my profile. Making it stand out to an extent. However, what stood out to me during the live session was when Annie Stankevich spoke about the importance of the bio and how she mentions her waitress roles and how they intertwine with her corporate skills. I would like to interpret this idea into my profile, but find it quite difficult to do so due to transiting.

Thank you, Professor B. Buckler!

The biggest take away from our session with Annie and Tiffany was that all of us have the similar fears when it comes to promoting ourselves. Both Annie and Tiffany gave great tips to improving our LinkedIn profiles. I haven’t been very active with my Linkedin and through the session I realized how powerful and easy it is to take full advantage on. Its the perfect way to network, build relationships, and find others with the same interests.

Unit 4 LinkedIn

Just wanted to say thank you again Professor for making this live session possible and inviting Annie and Tiffany along. For someone who just made a LinkedIn account literally this month, I found this live session extremely helpful and important. Especially the slides from Annie! I cant quote Annie exactly but my biggest takeaway from this session is when Annie told us how recruiters search for specific keywords in your profile. This can be on your headline, job description and summary. Also another takeaway that I know others in the class can agree on is how to structure your Bio. I am still having a issue with this because I feel my Bio is not as strong as it should be.
