There are many advantages to choosing a host-country national. By choosing host-country nationals, the staff will have no problem with understanding language and culture. It will also benefit the company since there will be fewer costs for hiring. Moreover, country host nationals will be familiar with economic, political, and legal environment and also business practices in the host country. Also, HCN provides opportunities for advancement and promotion to local nationals and increases their commitment and motivation to work.

In the U.S the average salary of a restaurant manager with 3-4 years of experience is somewhere between $40k-50k. In the U.K, the compensation plan for a restaurant manager includes an average salary which is between 25-30k in pounds, which is around $40,000. In addition, the benefits include bonus payments if they reach teh target set by their head office. Other benefits may include free meals on shift, staff discounts, and private medical insurance. Some of the fringe benefits for full-time managers include paid vacations. The amount of time for vacation is determined by one’s amount of time with the company. There are also compensation laws in the U.K. One is the NMW. This means that the minimum wage depends on the employee’s age. The country also has a mandatory requirement for employees to work 48 hours a week.

On the other hand, the other country that the restaurant Fish to go will be entered is Mexico. The minimum wage in the country is 102-176 pesos, which is 5-9 in USD. The average restaurant manager’s compensation is 49,500 pesos which are equivalent to $24,000. As can be seen, there’s a huge difference in currencies of the two countries. The USD rate is much higher than the Mexican currency. So in that case, it’s better to hire someone from that same country. The restaurant manager’s salary varies according to location, experience, skills, and gender. Same as the U.K, Mexico too has similar benefits for the employees including vacation, medical insurance, and free meals. To hire a host-country national, they need to have training. This includes having management training, leadership behavior, team building and being a motivational coach etc.

Business Ethics

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take the class so I am not aware of what were the points made in the live discussion. The debate was whether students should resume in person learning or should they continue remote. I was assigned the position that students should all be remote. For some reasons, it’s reasonable that students should continue remote learning, because it’s better to stay at home and work since Covid-19 is rising again. Also it provides flexibility to work from anywhere and for parents. According to an article LearnSafe “Distance learning forces a student to understand the best ways they learn and implement those ways at the best times.” However in my personal opinion, I don’t agree with the statement that students should do remote learning. I personally liked in person learning because I feel it was much easier for students to understand. Remote learning has made it a little difficult to understand some things. In person, we could go to the professor and ask questions  and any other things we don’t understand in class. Also face to face interaction provides more networking opportunities for students that’s why I like in person learning.

risk management

The biggest risk that companies are facing in 2020 is the Coronavirus. It has affected many businesses and the economy to go down. This is important to focus on because it has risks for the employees and the customers and the companies have to think about their reputation, and profits. Also with the pandemic continuing to peak in markets and overall, it’s now more important to focus on the ways to prevent it and take precautions for the safety of employees and the customers. Moreover, in the midst of this uncertainty, the steps for reopening and reinvention of organization or companies remain unchanged, but they now must consider how the pandemic’s recurrence is impacting their recovery strategies. Organizations can prevent these risks by creating some guidelines for the employees and customers to follow. This can include not being in close contact with someone and keeping your distance from others. If companies don’t do anything beneficial for their employees in this kind of situation, then it can affect the reputation in employees’ view. These threats affect my comfort because since this pandemic, we are advised to work remotely. I wasn’t very comfortable at first but with time, I got used to it. Sometimes it doesn’t feel right to be working from home because there’s so much distraction. But also, we can’t go to the workplace or schools since it’s a big risk to take as the Covid cases keep increasing.

Benefit

Almost every company and organization offers employee benefits, but some go beyond the expectations. Google is one of those companies that provide its employees with incredible benefits. The company offers free lunch and dinner for its employees with a variety of different options. Google also offers onsite physicians, nurses, medical services and health care coverage to keep its employees healthy and happy. Moreover, google employees can travel without any worries. They are “covered with travel insurance and emergency assistance on both personal and work related vacations” (Investopedia). In addition, according to cnbc, “google encourages employees to spend 20% of their time pursuing innovative ideas about which they are passionate about.” To attract and retain employees, google have added some non traditional benefits which includes fitness centers, massages and paid leave for new fathers. Some of these benefits are very appealing to me because I don’t think I have ever heard of these that other companies offer. Benefits such as receiving travel insurance and encouraging employees to think what they are passionate about in their work time are very useful and rare that this company has to offer. I would consider taking a lower rate of pay to gain the benefits, because If I am working somewhere I want to feel happy and motivated to keep doing my job; and not just getting paid but not liking the job I am doing. All these benefits are paying off in the long run for companies because of all the benefits, less employees quit and they are more motivated to do their best.

  • What do you think is the most demotivating part of Harper’s job?

The most demotivating part of Harper’s job is that her new boss doesn’t appreciate her enough for the work she does. Ever since her previous boss left, Harper’s job responsibility increased with more work load. Her previous boss Jose used to manage her and another colleague, so he was able to give attention to her and recognize the hard work that she did. But Harper’s new boss has to manage the whole group, so he doesn’t have time to go to everyone and check on them. That’s why he is not available if Harper needs help and doesn’t recognize her for her hard work.

  • If you were an HR manager meeting with Harper’s supervisor, David, what advice would you give to help them re-engage Harper?

If I was an HR manager, I would advise David to hold a monthly meeting for the employees and acknowledge them for their hard work. I think the manager should also do the employee of the month. That way the employees will be motivated to perform their best and will be appreciated.

  • What would be the downside of losing Harper as an employee?

Losing Harper as an employee would be a downside because she is an amazing employee and very hard working. She has done more work than she could do but she wasn’t appreciated for it, and that’s why Harper decided to leave the company.

Personality test assingment

Unit 5 Assignment

According to a 16personalities assessment, my personality is an adventurer person (ISFP) whose traits are Introverted, observant, feeling and prospecting. These are somewhat true but not entirely. Yes it’s true that I am an introvert. I am a quiet and shy kind of person but not observant and prospecting. As can be seen, the result wasn’t very accurate so I don’t agree with what it suggested about my personality. Moreover, there’s also some of the strengths and weaknesses determined by the test.

The strengths of this personality type are passionate, sensitive to others, and imaginative. I agree with these because as of being sensitive to others, I can easily relate to others emotions, helping them and minimize conflict. It’s also true that I am very passionate about things whether it’s my work or something else. I don’t stick to one passion, if I pursue something for a period of time and then find something more interesting and exciting; my focus will eventually shift to that. All these traits are my strengths which I use in my personal and professional life. No matter what career or job we choose, being passionate about your goals and connecting to other people is very important. It helps with creativity and builds focus. On the other hand, the weaknesses include easily stressed. This is quite true but not a 100 percent. I get stressed out in situations like when I have to talk in front of a group of people; that’s why I am not really good at public speaking. Other weaknesses are being unpredictable and being fiercely independent. I don’t believe that I face these weaknesses in my work or personal life.

I believe that personality tests are not effective to determine whether a candidate is right for a role or not. These tests can give an overview of how a person’s personality could be, but it is not entirely true. Just like mine some of the things were accurate but at the same time, other things weren’t. It’s just so that a person (employer) can get an idea of what he’s expecting a candidate to be. Employers who use personality tests to select candidates, can result in not choosing qualified candidates. It may exclude talented candidates who think outside of the box. In addition, it can’t be reliable. Candidates can answer questions by choosing answers they believe employers want to hear.  This can make tests results difficult to intrepet or invalid, since the candidate is not being truthful.

LinkedIn assignment

I am glad that I got to learn about LinkedIn from Annie and Tiffany. Anne helped me understand what techniques we can use to make our LinkedIn standout from others. She also explained how a resume and LinkedIn account are different. I got to learn that we should not over write about our self, but write about necessary things such as what kind of jobs we are interested in or what kind of audience we are trying to attract. I also learned that we should include key words/ skills in our summary which are related to the job we are looking for. This way, it can be easier to find jobs that are suitable for you. Moreover, Tiffany also gave some useful tips which we should know. They include not providing extra information about yourself, and some ways that can help us prepare for interviews and what to expect from the employer.

I created LinkedIn last semester but I never got the opportunity to learn more about it. I am glad that I got this opportunity to make my account better.
