Upon my birth
my mother said
there is god in you
can you feel her dancing

Each poem written by rupi kaur is a journey itself. Each poem in her collection the sun and her flowers consists of grief, love, self-abandonment, roots, and empowerment all coming together in five sections of the book: “Wilting,” “Falling,” “Rooting,” “Rising,” and “Blooming.” The poems all bring forth some kind of emotion, each relatable in one way or the other for each person who reads them. Within these poems the reader is able to find one that speaks to them and find closure and comfort.

Rupi kaur’s the sun and her flowers follows a layout of sections full of poems. Each section pertains to certain events and emotions that the poems deliver: “Wilting” the part of the journey where one breaks down and becomes one with the soil again, and “Falling,” “Rooting,” “Rising” and “Blooming” all representing different parts in the journey the book follows, open for each reader’s own interpretation of the meaning behind the sections. The poems all cover different parts of life. The loss of someone and the loss of yourself. The life that comes with moving and finding a new journey. Becoming and connecting with a new person. All things people deal with on a daily basis.

The sun and her flowers by rupi kaur is a beautiful piece of art. Like her previous work, this book is just as filled with a journey told through each poem, all collectively coming together to tell a story of what rupi kaur and other people have gone and are currently going through. This book brings a comfort of knowing others go through the same thing and you will get through it and you will grow, blooming into the new person in the end.
