Mateo, a 12-year-old, has faced many struggles. Dealing with the deaths of his father and sister and his mother who battles a deep depression neglecting Mateo in the process. Esme is a loud eccentric young girl who is not afraid to be herself and take up space while battling her own family who tries to bring her down. These two are brought together by destiny, made to save each other and hold a friendship meant to last a lifetime.
Esme is part of a gypsy bandwagon that travels from village to village in the country of Mexico during the 1950s, trading entertainment for resources they need. One day the bandwagon shows up in the small village on a mountain where Mateo is staying with his family. Trading fortunes for things like food and baskets brings forth the truth behind what is to happen between these two individuals whose destiny is linked together from the moment they met. In the words of the gypsy fortune teller and Esma, “This boy, Teo, and I, Esma, Queen of Lightning, are on the path to being loyal friends for our long lives. . . . if our friendship lasts, we will save each other when no one else can. This is our destiny!”
The Lightning Queen by Laura Resau is an amazing book that talks about a friendship forming between two individuals from different backgrounds and facing obstacles while saving the friendship and saving each other no matter how many people look down on them. This book is a great way to teach the importance of friendship and how it can be found anywhere and in anyone, there is no limit to friendship.
