We will explore how clear course orientation, welcome materials, and transparent expectations reduce cognitive load and improve student readiness. This includes getting students started successfully through well‑organized “Welcome” content, syllabus design, course navigation, instructor presence, and access to institutional support resources. We will review guidelines for making course structure, modality, objectives, and contact information easy to find and understand.

Session #1 of a 6-part series: BMCC’s Course Design Workshop Series supports faculty in the design, review, and continuous improvement of their courses across all modalities (in‑person, hybrid, or online). The series introduces the BMCC Course Rubric—a locally adapted framework based on the SUNY Online Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR)—as a shared resource to guide quality, accessibility, and usability in course design. Each session features a guided “think‑aloud” review of a faculty partner’s Brightspace course site, offering authentic, real‑time examples that promote reflective practice and actionable feedback.

Designed as a collaborative experience, the series is open to faculty across ranks, disciplines, and teaching modalities who are interested in refreshing or enhancing the online components of their courses. Faculty are welcome to attend individual sessions or the entire series; those who participate in all six sessions will receive a certificate of completion.
