Details
This session focuses on fostering meaningful interaction and instructor presence. We will review guidelines for regular and substantive interaction, including instructor‑to‑student, student‑to‑student, and student‑to‑instructor communication. We will explore strategies for building trust and community through icebreakers, discussion design, collaborative activities, and structured opportunities for sharing diverse perspectives. The session reinforces how clear communication norms and consistent engagement support student motivation and retention.
Session #5 of a 6-part series: BMCC’s Course Design Workshop Series supports faculty in the design, review, and continuous improvement of their courses across all modalities (in‑person, hybrid, or online). The series introduces the BMCC Course Rubric—a locally adapted framework based on the SUNY Online Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR)—as a shared resource to guide quality, accessibility, and usability in course design. Each session features a guided “think‑aloud” review of a faculty partner’s Brightspace course site, offering authentic, real‑time examples that promote reflective practice and actionable feedback.
Designed as a collaborative experience, the series is open to faculty across ranks, disciplines, and teaching modalities who are interested in refreshing or enhancing the online components of their courses. Faculty are welcome to attend individual sessions or the entire series; those who participate in all six sessions will receive a certificate of completion.
