Details

This session emphasizes designing learning materials and activities that are engaging, inclusive, and accessible. We will explore strategies for incorporating higher‑order thinking, real‑world application, and varied content formats while maintaining accessibility standards. Special attention is given to the use of Open Educational Resources (OER), copyright and licensing clarity, and universal design practices such as alt text, captions, transcripts, and descriptive hyperlinks. We will examine how thoughtful content design supports equity and student success.

Session #4 of a 6-part series: BMCC’s Course Design Workshop Series supports faculty in the design, review, and continuous improvement of their courses across all modalities (in‑person, hybrid, or online). The series introduces the BMCC Course Rubric—a locally adapted framework based on the SUNY Online Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR)—as a shared resource to guide quality, accessibility, and usability in course design. Each session features a guided “think‑aloud” review of a faculty partner’s Brightspace course site, offering authentic, real‑time examples that promote reflective practice and actionable feedback.

Designed as a collaborative experience, the series is open to faculty across ranks, disciplines, and teaching modalities who are interested in refreshing or enhancing the online components of their courses. Faculty are welcome to attend individual sessions or the entire series; those who participate in all six sessions will receive a certificate of completion.
