4. Michelle Alexander’s argument about segregation…

b) Respond to two other students’ comments.

Respond to the following questions in the “Comment” box below:

  1. What concept that we have already discussed does “faction” remind you of?
  2. According to Federalist #10 (written by James Madison), what is the source of wealth (private property)? What factor explains why some people get to possess wealth by owning private property, and others don’t (thus remaining poor)? This is a key question, because it shows how the authors of the Constitution thought about the difference between different classes of Americans! HINT: focus on the passage that begins: “The diversity in the faculties (WHAT DOES FACULTIES mean or refer to?) of men, from which the rights of property originate, is not les….”
  3. Do you agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty?
  4. What is the core mission (“first object”) of the US government? Does this surprise you, does it sound different from what our society today seems to suggest the core mission of the government is? Explain.
  5. Given the discussion in questions 1-4, are you surprised that Federalist #10 is not in favor of democracy, and supports a Republican (representative) form of government? Why would d the author dislike a (pure) democratic form of government? Hint: think about how this question connects with the social classes…

  1. 1- Faction means a small orginized group within a large one. This reminds me of capitalist and the working class. The small organised group would be the working class which all work for the large one . capitalist own majority of property and they then have people work for them for a certain about a hour.
2- the source of wealth comes form inheriting wealth and power , that way wealth stays in the wealthy class leaving the poor class poor without any way of moving up.
3- I do agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty. During that time that’s exactly how people would become wealthy by owning property or inheriting property from families. Now things have changed but not as much. Famous people children inherit wealth even in the government children’s of those who where important get power given to them because of their social status. People are now able to become wealthy but In most cases those who are wealthy where born into it.
    4. The core mission of the US government is the protection of the faculties. This does not surprise me because it has always been their mission to protect this. Its their mission to make sure the power stays in the small group itself. This sounds different from what the government is trying to do today. Now the gavermenet is suggesting we voice our vote and help equalise the garverment for the people.
    5. I am not surprised the federalist 10 is not in favour of democracy and supports republican because democracy is what is suppose to make a change and equalise the social classes while republicans only care about the future of the government and their wealth. The other would dislike a pure form of democracy because they would then have to share with the poor class and they won’t be able to make the choices based off a small group and instead based off every individual.

    1. hey, I did not understand this article and your answers to the questions helped me understand what the article was refering too. You get right to the point with your statements and use a lot of your own thoughts!

    2. Q1: excellent summary!

Q2: difference in wealth comes from how intelligent someone is by birth (“naturally”, as they say). This is a classic racist and elitist answer, which I will discuss in details in my summary video for the Module.

Good ideas throughout Q3 and 4, yes, the core mission of the government has been a) to protect itself from challengers, and b) to protect the wealth of the capitalists class, from any dangers from the poor, working class.

  2. 1) Faction reminds me of how we covered the different social classes just like capitalists (the owners) and the working class (the laborers).
    2) The main source of wealth comes from inherited, passed down family wealth such as money, businesses or even just power. So the wealthy families keep their families wealthy, keeping the money and power only to themselves whereas the poor families have no handouts and are starting with nothing, passing down nothing to their next generations.
    3) I do agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty because a lot of people fail to realize that poverty is very much systematic no matter how hard a poor person works, you can not just climb out of poverty easily where a wealthy person usually comes from a background of wealth.
    4) The core mission of the US government is the protection of the faculties which better translates to “protect our income”. This doesn’t surprise me whatsoever because America is such a money hungry and greedy country, they will stop at nothing to make sure income continues to flow in by any means necessary. This relates to relate to todays society, a lot of states were reopening to send people back to work I the middle of the pandemic way before things were a little under control.
    5) I am not surprised at all that the federalist 10 is in favor of republicans as opposed to democracy because democracy had the power to cause change in the ways things were and make the government obligated to be equal to everyone. The author would dislike a form of government because it means that things will not always be in their favor and they will have to have the needs of the less fortunate met as well as not just their own.

    1. Hey! great job explaining your answers because i quite did not understand lol. I agree with your answer to number #3, i like how you said ” poverty is systematic” just like being wealthy is systematic.

    2. i agree! with your anser to number 4 american is definently money hungry and its sad because this is the world i live in and we live and becoming adults its crazy to experience how they really dont care about us .

    3. On Q1: Yes! Social classes are indeed an example of a faction, and the writers of the Constitution were definitely thinking in terms of class ,when the designed the system of government.

Q4: well-put on this emphasis on the protection of the accumulation of wealth by the government: and it is even more narrow than that, the goal of the government, according to Federalist #10, is to indeed protect the wealth privately owned by the wealthy class of American capitalists. We see that class’ influence in our everyday politics.

  3. Honestly…. I did not quite understand this article while I was reading it but answered the questions the best way I understood :/

    1) Faction reminds me of the the different kinds of social class (upper and lower) and capitalist and labor.
    2) The source of wealth comes from inherenting power, the article stated ” from which the rights of property originate.” wealth and power stays within each other, you have to inherent wealth and power.
    3) Yes I agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty because thats how you became wealthy and had power because you were born into it.
    4) The protection of these faculties is the first object of government. This does not surprise me because this still happens in todays society. The faculties are the ones bringing in the money and the ones with the power.
    5) I am not surprised the federalist 10 is in favor of the republicans because democratics want equal rights as republicans want things their way. Democratics are supposely “working/lower class” and upper class can not benefit from us.

  4. 1. The concept of faction reminds me of social classes and how we are divided as citizens due to our different interests.
    2. The source of private wealth comes from a group that form the same interest. Some are able to keep their wealth and others stay poor because the government isn’t focused on the lower class they want to protect the wealth.
    3. I agree with the explanation because it shows us why we have so much division and why wealthy people have the control.
    4. The first object of the government is to protect the facilities which are the social classes so that they can ensure there is always a class system for wealthy to stay on top and the poor to remain lower. In today’s society the government seems to focus more on rights and protection rather than wealth.
    5. I’m not surprised because the discussion was about being an individual in society and only worrying about your own wealth, this didn’t apply to people of the lower class because they do not own private wealth. The author dislikes democratic ideas because with this idea things will not be in favor of the wealthy. To be wealthy you must preserve what you have and grow more but with a democratic government this is harder to do.

    1. Q2: indeed, that seems to be the same practice today as well, we’re again hearing that CUNY might be short on money, this time because of the pandemic – again, the university attended by mostly non-wealthy New Yorkers, is targeted for cuts, a contemporary example of class politics.

  5. 1. Faction reminds me of social classes and how they were organized.

    2. The main source of wealth comes from inherited power. Social inequality is a factor that explains why some people can’t possess wealth and remain poor.

    3. I agree with the explanation of wealth and poverty because it shows us how and why wealthy people have control.

    4. The core mission of the US government is the protection of facilities.

    5. No I am not surprised the federalist number 10 is not in favor of democracy because it has the power to give equal rights to everyone and they wouldn’t have as much power as they do.

  6. 1. The term “faction” is a small group that comprise of a larger group. Example of faction is the Republician, Conservatives and Democrats parties.

    2. According to James Madison the source of wealth is obtained from inherited power. Income inequality is a factor that can explain the source of wealth.

    3. I do agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty because it depicts how the rich and poor are divided. It also shows how the system was created to keep working class people working and poor while sustaining the rich and keeping them rich.

    4. The core mission of the object US government is to protect the facilities of social class by protecting the rich and keep the working class poor.

    5. This does not surprise me at all, the federalist number 10 supported the republicans as opposed to democracy.

    1. Yes, on Q4: the goal is the protection of the wealth of the wealthy class, and in that sense, we’ll see how this goal hasn’t changed much in our day – and lots of politics happens around this very goal.

Q5: good point, those who supported a democratic government (whereby all members of society would participate in – well, minus the enslaved people- were in the minority of the writers of the Constitution. The Bill of Rights was their big achievement, but everything else was the work of the conservatives of the day (who weren’t Republicans in terms of the political party, but were republicans, in terms of their political ideology.

  7. 1. Faction is a small group that represents smaller groups. One could be social classes because they are all organized into smaller groups like upper , middle and lower classes.

2.The source of wealth is inherited wealth. One factor that explains why some people get to posses wealth by owning private property etc is because this wealth was passed down to them.

3.I do agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty because it demonstrates how the poor and rich are divided. It also shows how it is a cycle how they try to keep it the same way they try to protect the rich and keep the lower class working and in poverty.

4.The core mission of the US government is that they protect their facilities. This means that they protect their social classes to keep the upper class wealthy and the lower in poverty.

5.The author would dislike a democratic form of government because they would be afraid of having to pay many taxes. I am not surprised that that the federalist papers #10 are supported by the republicans because it opposes democracy , they also oppose equal rights for all.

  8. 1) The term faction best reminds me of a larger notion amongst the structure of the work industry. In refraining from the typical view that is likely to envision managers and employees, the concept is aligned with capitalists and workers. Faction is the idea of a small group within a larger one. So although it is the managers beneath them that have the responsibility to hire those workers, it is capitalists that enforce unfair utilization, and managers are just another employee.

    2) According to Federalist #10, written by James Madison, the source of wealth in private property is focused on what was inherited. The generalized thinking acquired by this thought is how a head start is normally gifted to a small group, while leaving the rest to fend for themselves. Yet, because of this head start, the possibilities could be endless. Thus, in itself it is an enlightenment why the majority are forced to experience what it is like to struggle.

    3) I absolutely agree with the explanation given of wealth and poverty. This concept supports my beliefs of how it occurs to this day and will always continue to do so. In reality, it is quite inevitable. Therefore, as long as one’s wealth remains profitable, their prosperous future will be handed down to the next generation to keep it all intact

    4) The “first object” of the United States government is the protection of facilities. Being that it is within the idea of social class, the “first object” is translated to the first or main objective in my eyes. Following this, it can be viewed in the manner to remain the divided aspects of wealth or even race, In “protecting” what is believed is rightfully just to keep in order. Countless citizens have proven how selfish this nation has become so it is highly unlikely for it to be of shock value any more.

    5) I am not surprised at all by the effects that may result from not favoring democracy. This country has entitled itself to ignore the habits that are most definitely harmful to a society as a whole, but in reality favors devastation for a particular group only. So many emotions or words are not seen or heard until the idea of forcible action is viewed as ideal. Yet even then it will support their contradiction amongst it’s outlook of stereotypes.

  9. 1. The word Faction reminds me of the breakdown on how the social classes are set up, organized and functions. Small groups which is the working class that works for the large groups which are the capitalist who owns the properties.

    2. The source of wealth comes from the inherited which is passed from families, business or power overall.

    3. I agree to the full explanation of wealth and poverty because when in a working class no matter what there is no escape from it, no way to avoid poverty It will come to you in many ways and don’t even try to use the amount of hours you work as an excuse in a way to get away from poverty. it will find a way to put you in checkmate.

    4. America has one main desire and we all know what it is. Money is there desire. America will not sleep until money is in there hands and then once money is given that’s when income comes into play.

    5. The country we live in today will always avoid the harm that’s affecting society until some type of action would make this country open its eyes and see the reality of what is right and wrong

  10. 1. In my understanding, faction reminds me of how social classes were split up. That’s why there are many different social classes depending on your financial status.

    2. The source of wealth comes from gaining power and control. From power and control there comes wealth.

3.I agree of the explanation of wealth and poverty because its representing now how the wealthy people are having more power over poverty.

    4. The core mission of the U.S government is that they want us to believe that they are protecting the American people instead their wealth are more important to them.

    5. I am not surprised because this shows of what type of country we are living in

  11. Faction reminds me of when we talked a out the capitalists and the working class and hoo they depend on us to run their businesses while they wait to see pofit. The working class is the smaller group working for the bigger one and we just get paid certain wages a hour for our “work”. They pay us bare minimum for us to work in their space .
2 Wealth comes from inheriting. i say this because People are born into it if your parents were wealthy you will most likely be wealthy as well and it keep passing on it also dosent give the lower class any chance to move up since it is inherited.
3-I agree with the way wealth and property is portrayed because it is inherite and if you own property your set . Things may have changed but not as much. Celebreties for example they network like now a days it not about what you know always its about who you know that can get you into the game .Like most of these stars dont have degrees or diplomas but their rich because of the talent they had and someone knew someone who introduced them.
4-The mision of the US governemt is to ofcourse make sure they are in good hands at all times by sugar coating and making it seem that american people are priority which we are not their wealth is more of a priority versus us as american people .
5-I am not suprised that fedilist 10 is in favour of the republicans because they have the power to make everyone equal but if that happens then they wouldnt have the same poer anymore .

  12. 1.What concept that we have already discussed does “faction” remind you of?

Faction reminds me of conflict theory. People who are conflicting usually take sides, which are known as factions. For instance, there could be a faction that wants democracy while the other is against it.

2.According to Federalist #10 (written by James Madison), what is the source of wealth (private property)? What factor explains why some people get to possess wealth by owning private property, and others don’t (thus remaining poor)? This is a key question, because it shows how the authors of the Constitution thought about the difference between different classes of Americans! HINT: focus on the passage that begins: “The diversity in the faculties (WHAT DOES FACULTIES mean or refer to?) of men, from which the rights of property originate, is not les….”

According to Madison, the source of wealth is different and unequal faculties of acquiring property. The factors that explain why some people own wealth and others do not is that those with faculties for getting richer make those who lack the faculty poor in that process. The faculties refer to the talents of getting rich. Madison wants the government to protect those with faculties so they are not adversely affected in any way by those who they might impoverish in the process.

3.Do you agree with this explanation of wealth and poverty?

I do not agree with that explanation of wealth and poverty. That is because it is quite challenging to rise from poverty and become wealthy. Only a few people in every generation can achieve that. Most wealthy people were born that way.

4.What is the core mission (“first object”) of the US government? Does this surprise you, does it sound different from what our society today seems to suggest the core mission of the government is? Explain.

The core mission of the US government should be to protect the rights and property of every individual without special consideration of the wealthy. However, that is not surprising because the government seems to protect the wealthy more than the poor. For instance, during the global recession, the government bailed out banks and other institutions, while very little was done to the working class who suffered greatly due to the effects of the recession.

5.Given the discussion in questions 1-4, are you surprised that Federalist #10 is not in favor of democracy, and supports a Republican (representative) form of government? Why would the author dislike a (pure) democratic form of government? Hint: think about how this question connects with the social classes…

I am not surprised that Federalist #10 is not in favor of democracy and supports a republican form of government. The author would dislike a purely democratic form of government because he is from the wealthy capitalist class while most voters are in the working class. Therefore, the wealthy class fears that if the working class take over, they might install an egalitarian system that could see them lose their wealth.

  13. 1. Group helps me to remember how we secured the distinctive social classes simply like business people (the proprietors) and the average workers (the workers).

    2. The wellspring of riches originates from inheriting influence, the article expressed ” from which the privileges of property begin.” riches and influence remains inside one another, you need natural riches and influence.

    3. I concur with the clarification since it gives us why we have so much division and why rich individuals have the control.

    4. The central mission of the article US government is to ensure the offices of social class by securing the rich and keeping the common poor.

    5. I am not astonished at all by the impacts that may result from not preferring popular government. This nation has qualified itself for overlook the propensities that are without a doubt destructive to a general public all in all, however actually favors demolition for a specific gathering as it were. Endless feelings or words are not seen or heard until the possibility of coercive activity is seen as ideal. However and still, at the end of the day it will uphold their logical inconsistency among it’s viewpoint of generalizations.

    1. Q4: yes, that is the central point of the paper! Ensuring class divisions that are enforced, with the wealthy in leading positions in government. Why the wealthy, because they believed that the wealthy were “more intelligent”, thus their intelligent enabled them to become wealthy!! This circular logic has continued to serve as justification for why Americans should admire the wealthy, the “successful”, etc., it is a very influential ideas to this day.
