Yiying Wu -law and Order

  1. Southern politicians choose “law and order” language for smart reasons. This gave them key advantages. The language sounded race-neutral. After the Civil Rights Act, politicians could not use openly racist language. “Law and order” helped reach more voters. Politicians could reframe civil rights protests as criminal acts. They said protesters broke the law. This made opponents look like they supported law enforcement, not racial hierarchy. The people could feel they stood for stability and safety without admitting racial motivations.
  2. The Southern Strategy still influenced American politics. It has evolved but remains powerful. Politicians still link social problems to individuals rather than structural issues. They emphasize punishment over rehabilitation while using coded racial appeals. Debates over drug policy and policing follow the same pattern from 1960s. People’s positions correlate with their racial views even when race is not mentioned. The Southern Strategy created a template for maintaining racial hierarchy through race-neutral language. This approach has proven durable across different issues like welfare policy and voting rights.

Diana Sadreeva Discussion 2.2

  1. Southern racist politicians chose to frame their defense of racial segregation through the language of “law and order” by trying to hide that their racist beliefs still existed heavily during the Civil Rights movement, by using this different type of language. While Civil Rights activists were protesting and fighting for their rights, southern governors claimed that their political rights were criminal. This was a way to prevent any movements from the activists and to keep segregation in place.
  2. I believe the Southern Strategy is still influential in America, as there are many examples of oppression in the political world. In the 2020 presidential election between Trump and Biden, President Trump employed the same Southern Strategy as President Nixon, utilizing the Republican Party to attract Democratic votes by giving racial fear-based messages. After the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests, Trump described activists as dangerous, violent, and said they commit acts of domestic terror. Not only is Trump and his administration targeting black people, but also to Mexican immigrants. He pushed for the border wall to be built and separated families in the process.

Ciara Acosta Responses to 2.2

  1. Southern racist politicians in the 1950s and 1960s chose to frame their defense of racial segregation using the language of “law and order” because it took away from the look of racial motives and made it look more acceptable and justified. By speaking about “law and order” they could look good to white voters without mentioning race. Since protests were seen as disruptive to “law and order” they were able to frame something that was peaceful as criminal activity; this allowed harsh responses without it looking like it had anything to do with race. All in all this helped them gain broader political support without loudly supporting white suppremacy.
  2. Yes I do belive that the Souther Strategy is still influencing American politics today. Race today in indirectly discussed. A modern example would be voter ID laws which creates voting restrictions.

Efuah Akhimien-Mhonan – Law and Order

  1. Southern racist politicians chose to frame their defense of racial segregation through the language of “law and order” to sound race neutral. This was a tactic to oppose the efforts of the Civil Rights movement, by abstaining the use of openly racist remarks. This technique gave these poltiiacnat s public supports as the fear-mongering from the media made the public more open to harsh policing and anti-Black policy. It also portrayed Civil Rights activists as savages and lawbreakers, which made the policing and crackdowns even more acceptable by the people.
  2. Yes, the Southern Strategy is still influencing American politics. Although the words may be different, the racial codes and undertones remain in politics. A great example of this is Donald Trump, he uses phrases such as “inner-city crime” or “law and order” in response to Black Lives Matter protests. He also loves to call immigrants “criminals”, this is all an attempt to stir the pot and cause an uproar fueled by racial resentment even though these phrases seem racially neutral. These tactics help to maintain the goal of the Southern Strategy.

Sara Ahmed – Discussion 2.2

  1. I think Southern racist politicians used the words “law and order” instead of directly defending segregation because it sounded better and less openly racist. Saying they wanted “law and order” made it seem like they were just trying to keep peace and protect people, not that they were trying to stop Black people from having equal rights. It gave them a way to hide their real motives behind something that sounded normal and reasonable. It also helped them gain support from people who might not agree with open racism, but still had fear or discomfort about the Civil Rights Movement.
  2. I do think the Southern Strategy is still influencing politics today. A good example is how some politicians today talk about crime or immigration in a way that targets certain racial groups, but without saying anything racist directly. They use terms like “illegal aliens,” “inner-city crime,” or “protect our borders” to get support from voters who are scared or angry about social changes. Just like before, these messages are often aimed at white voters who feel like they’re losing power, but the racism is hidden behind other language. It’s the same strategy, just updated.

Module 2.2 badr salah

  1. Why do think Southern racist politicians chose to frame their defense of racial segregation through the language of “law and order”? What special advantages was this choice of words going to give them?

Honestly they used law and order as a sneaky way to talk about race without actually saying it it made them sound like they just cared about keeping things peaceful but really it was about pushing back against civil rights movement it let them get support from people who didn’t like the idea of change but didn’t want to admit it was about race.

  1. Do you think the Southern Strategy is still influencing American politics? Give an example supporting your answer.

Yea I think it still shows up you will hear politicians talk about crime in the cities or protecting the border and its not always about safety sometimes it feels like a way to stir up fear or blame certain groups. It’s definitly not direct but what they are trying to say still stands.
