Hi everyone!
My name is Ciara Acosta and I am a childhood education major here at BMCC. This about to be my third year in school but I am finally in the path to what I truly want to do. I have always wanted to work with kids since I was younger, I really do believe it is my calling. So after BMCC I want to work in an elementray school; anywhere from grades 1-5.
I have a soft spot for children and something about feeling like I can help shape little humans is so rewarding. In my free time I enjoy playing softball, reading books, coloring, and trying new things with my friends. I serve my community at my church every Thursday at a food pantry and teach kids about Jesus on Sundays. I am a proud christian and enjoy watching podcasts and reading the word of God as well on my free time.
I am here to learn and complete my degree so I can go on to be a teacher that kids remember even after they graduate.
I hope to learn a little bit more about everyone and completing this class together.
God bless!
Hi Ciara!
I too have a soft spot for children!! I also try to volunteer whenever I can with New York Cares and do afterschool programs with them.
P.S
I wanted to mention that BMCC has a program that helps you get your Teachers Aide Certification as well as free workshops to practice for the test. This program came in handy when I was a 1:1 studying for the ATAS095. I hope that helps you!!
Hi Ciara,
Thanks for sharing your story! It’s inspiring to see how passionate you are about working with children it’s clear that teaching is truly your calling. I think it’s amazing that you’re already so involved in your community and church, especially teaching kids and helping at the food pantry. That kind of heart and dedication is exactly what makes a great teacher. I’m wishing you all the best on your journey, and I’m sure you’ll be one of those unforgettable teachers that students carry with them for life.
Hi Ciara!
It’s so inspiring to read about your passion for working with children. I think it’s beautiful that you’ve known since you were younger that this is your calling, and it’s even more meaningful that you’re combining your love for kids with your faith and community service. I’m sure you’ll be an amazing and memorable teacher one day!

My first year of college has definitely opened to my eyes to the fact that there is so much I don’t know yet, and I would like to learn more and challenge myself. I am definitely looking forward to this class and I wish everyone the best of luck in this course and beyond. Let’s have a wonderful summer !! 🙂
Hi Efuah! Cyber security sounds fun! I had an interest in majoring in cyber security at one point, but found criminal justice was more for me. Shout out to Nigeria!! One of my close friends is Nigerian and the culture is so rich and beautiful.
Also my first year of college taught me the same thing — honestly it was a lot of self growth and discovery. I hope you have a great semester and a good summer.
Nice to meet you, Efuah!
I have always wanted to get into computer science, even when I was younger, and it’s just not for me, too confusing for me. So props to you, that’s amazing. I also admire that you still find time for the things you love while juggling school, some people find that hard, like myself, I get very overwhelmed. Good luck with your studies!
Hello everyone,
My name is Dakota Dickey. I am originally from the great sunshine state of FL. I moved to NYC back in 2017 after finishing high school to pursue something bigger than what my lovely state had to offer. I started my higher edu here at BMCC in the fall last year and I have been in love with all the programs (besides Calculus 1) so far. I am majoring in Econ as I think it gives me a really good understanding of how the world works. I am looking forward to going to a 4 year university after finishing my AA. After which I will be going to law school at either Columbia law or another great law program. I am super excited to start this course given all that is going on in the world at the moment (there is always something if you pay attention) at the end of the course I am hoping to have a better understanding of how American Gov works.
Good luck everyone on their summer semester!!!
Hello Dakota,
I was very intrigued about how you came back to New York and wondered if time to time you go back to Florida? I am also interested going to a four year college after BMCC! Going to Columbia law sounds intimidating to me, but I just know you will be strive in it. I wish the best of luck in your goals.
Hi Dakota,
Thanks for sharing! I think it’s awesome that you moved to NYC to pursue something bigger it shows a lot of drive. I also admire your plan to go from BMCC to a 4 year university and then law school. I totally agree that there’s always something going on in the world, and understanding how the government works is key to making sense of it. Wishing you the best this semester and beyond!
