1. Describe how you understand ideology in your own words?
    • Ideology is how people see the world and how they think society should run. These beliefs are constructed from many different factors including family, education and racial and cultural backgrounds. An example is that women are more likely to be liberal compared to men, because of ideas of women’s rights to choose and freedom. Also the wealthy are more likely to be conservative based on their economic values.
    • I feel that ideology is deeper than just political views and opinions. I understand that these beliefs impact our daily lives and how we treat others. It not only impacts how we think but it also impacts our behaviors and how we treat the world around us. It not only brings people together but it also causes a great divide between those who don’t agree.
  2. How do you understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideology in US politics? What seem to be the big differences, the dividing line?
    • I understand the difference between conservative and liberal ideology in politics as being how different people in America believe the country should run. These views include the role of the government, social and cultural values, and economic views. For example, circling back to what was covered in the last chapter, liberals support efforts made to change the justice system and address racial disparities, while conservatives support focusing on law and order and things like the southern strategy.
  3.  How do you understand Althusser’s definition of ideology?
Althusser’s definition of ideology is summed up to be beliefs and values that determine how people see themselves in the world. An example of his views would be how the school systems teach us as people early on how to function as the working class. How to follow rules, respecting authority and punctuality are some things that we learn in school that mold us for the work world. As children this is all we know so we don’t question it but consider it to just be the norm.
