DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the fundamentals of multimedia production. In a hands-on class, students will learn the essentials of program design and authoring software in an integrated computer environment. Students will learn how to combine graphics, audio and text to create programs for industrial and educational applications.

REQUIRED TEXT: MMP100 is a ZTC (Zero Textbook Course). Content for the course should be provided free of cost by the individual professor on the platform of their choice.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY: Here is a list of software used for each module (as well as free/open source alternatives when available). 

  • Web : Cloud storage (i.e: Google Drive, Dropbox), code editor (i.e: Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text) and publishing platform (i.e: Adobe Portfolio, Squarespace, OpenLab) of your choice. The free version of these options should be enough for this class.
  • Digital Imaging: Adobe Photoshop CC & Adobe Illustrator CC (free license with your BMCC account – see instructions below)
  • Audio: Audacity (free & open source)
  • Animation: Adobe Animate & Adobe Media Encoder (free license with your BMCC account see instructions below)
  • 3D modeling : A Tinkercad account (free)

Students do NOT have to purchase an Adobe membership. The Adobe software used in this course are available for FREE for BMCC students. They can follow these instructions to download them on their personal computer: https://servicedesk.bmcc.cuny.edu/TDClient/33/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=1070

Students may also use the BMCC computer labs to work on their projects outside of class. S-510C is equipped with all the software needed for this course. PORTFOLIO: A strong portfolio is indispensable in pursuing a career in Media Arts. Students should save, document, and share their work their time at BMCC (and beyond of course!). Please review these recommendations for storing and sharing work (including the projects created in this class.

CLASS PARTICIPATION: Participation in the academic activity of each course is a significant component of the learning process and plays a major role in determining overall student academic achievement. Academic activities may include, but are not limited to, attending class, submitting assignments, engaging in in-class or online activities, taking exams, and/or participating in group work. Each instructor has the right to establish their own class participation policy, and it is each student’s responsibility to be familiar with and follow the participation policies for each course.

USE OF AI: In this course, students may use generative AI applications for the creation of text (including markup and code) and/or media for specific assignments, only as directed by the instructor. 

GRADING: Grading is based on the successful completion of all projects and quizzes, and on class participation. Students are expected to complete all listed deadlines for assignments and quizzes. The acceptance of late submissions is at the purview of individual professors.
