The course is built around three major projects. See the basic requirements for each project below. Then follow the “full guidelines” link for a complete description of each project.
Doc Project [20%]
For the first project each student will develop this project from a published work of non-fiction, creating a visual narrative with a beginning, middle, and end that conforms to the 3-Act Structure. This project’s deliverables include a:
- Logline
- Treatment
- Short A/V script and
- In-class pitch with Q&A
Read full guidelines in top menu under PROJECTS > DOC PROJECTS
Fiction Project [20%]
For the course’s second major project, students will develop and complete a short screenplay (4-10 pages long) in standard screenplay format. In addition, students will use a beat sheat (step outline) to create a story with a clear beginning, middle, and an end (following the Three Act Structure). Similar to the nonfiction project, the deliverables students will need to hand in include the following:
- Logline
- Beat Sheet
- Treatment and
- Properly formatted script that follows the Three-Act Structure
In addition, students must bring a completed first draft of a treatment (script optional) to class on its due date to receive a Workshop Reading.

Revision of the Fiction Project [25%]
Students will revise their fiction project so that the script, logline and treatment all make for a more effective narrative and presentation.
(Any students whose Nonfiction Projects receive a B- or lower grade may also revise that project for a better grade, in addition to the main revision.)
