Week H Assignment – The Joneses

Masayuki Kirsch – Marketing Homework H

Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

Technically I would not categorize how the Jones family lives as a personal selling. I claim this because though they do not directly sell a product, they sell a lifestyle. Furthermore, the literal definition of personal selling is “Direct, personal communication between sellers and buyers or potential buyers.” As seen in the movie, there is no direct selling; instead, it is quite the opposite, having them hint at the benefit of purchasing the product. So essentially, the family is indirectly marketing a product. If the Jones family lives were personal selling, then the face-to-face selling would be much more apparent and their intents.

What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

Brands like my favorites create a narrative around their product and industry. To give more clarification, Nike would associate itself with athletes who are loved (Good reputation) by the public. This has been evident recently, as companies have disbanded their relationship with Kanye West and Kyrie Irving to maintain their brand image. Like how the family fully goes to preserve their image and the products. Other instances can be seen with celebrities who are paid to wear certain products subtly without emphasizing them, not making it seem like an advertisement. This perfectly aligns with a quote in the movie “You are here to sell a lifestyle. If people want you, they will want what you got.” Companies intend to ingrain their products into a particular way of life, where it becomes normalized or the standard to acquire such products.

Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

The way the Joneses marketed their products was unethical due to the manipulation involved and its effects on the family and the community. This can even be seen in the end, as the lying gets to the protagonist and completely breaks him apart. Lying is unethical, and the family’s strategy involves lying to the fullest extent. Their marketing method created an unhealthy living standard for people, and we can see this play out through the family’s neighbor’s death.

How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

I would be disgusted and disappointed if I discovered their secret because the friendship is inauthentic and fabricated. Everyone associated with the family has been seen to have gone through some trauma, as their intent to sell and normalize certain products can drastically affect my life. I would question other things as well. What else is fabricated? What else is attempting to replicate the same thing the family has done? It would cause some phycological damage to myself.

WEEK H

I think it is definitely possible to classify the sales of the Jones family as personal sales, since they directly influenced the buyers of certain brands, for example, you can cite Steve, as a marketer, influenced the target audience and recommended them to buy clubs like his because, according to him, without such a club, he would not have been able to hit the ball so well and people have an opinion that they should also buy such a thing, because without it such blows will not work. What did Steve do ? he chose the target audience, demonstrated the product and recommended it for purchase, which can be called a personal sale.

From the similarities between the tactics of major brands and the Jones family, one can distinguish how they show how well things look on someone at the moment when Steve’s boss ran past a crowd of girls, she showed how well the clothes of this brand fit on her, thereby stimulating others to buy the same thing in the advertisements of large companies do the same as in sports, Nike sponsors bigger teams to wear their clothes and show how well they fit. Also, from examples, we can cite a game that was sold by the son of the Jones family, he showed in every possible way how it can be interesting to play this or that game, thereby stimulating other teenagers to buy the same thing. The same is done by large companies and shows people that it is very interesting for others to play it.

Based on what I saw in the film, I can say that the method is really working but not at all ethical and I don’t think that any of the large companies will do anything so radical because everyone understands that this is a film, but in real life there are people who may be envious and they will stop paying bills and so on, just to keep up for a neighbor and show that he lives no worse, but he obviously lost because the amount of his money is limited compared to who he is competing with. This method cannot be called ethical.

If I had made friends with someone like the Jones family, I would have known what he was doing because for me the concept of a friend is very clear, it’s someone you can trust with everything and if I had known someone for only 2 months like in the movie, I could have called him  a close acquaintance  most and if then I found out that he was doing this would not have affected me in any way, but if we had known each other for many years and I found out that all this time he just sold me the goods, I would pay attention to how much he managed to sell and if the amount was not large within 1000 or 1500, then I would be so much Of course I wouldn ‘t sweat it I asked him if his friendship for me was sincere if he had said yes, then I would have continued to communicate with him knowing that he works in such companies.

Week H assignment – May Turgeman

week H

Marketing- week H

I would categorize the way that the Jones family lives as personal selling from the reason that everything they are trying to do in their everyday life is selling their lifestyle to the people around them- which leads the other people to want to buy the same things as they have to be like the Jones family. The movie’s title was aptly named after the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses.” They are using all of the techniques of personal marketing to sell goods and products, from lipstick to a car. The movie presents all the “Personal Marketing” techniques, such as sales presentations, conversations, demonstrations, addressing objections, field selling, retail selling, door-to-door selling, consultative selling, and reference selling. They pretend to be a perfect family, wearing the best clothes, living in the biggest house, driving the best cars, and using the best products. This way, they interest the people around them in the neighborhood. The people get to see the products, try them, get familiar with them, and eventually want to buy them to be like the Jones family.

I can see the similarities in the marketing and selling tactics between the Jones family to the brand “Revolve.” Revolve is a large online clothing store company that sells high-quality clothes and designers for every occasion- from jeans to black tie events. Their most common marketing tactic is sending different clothes to famous models/ influencers with many followers on Instagram. The girls are wearing the clothes and posting pictures wearing the clothes and tagging “revolve” so all the followers will know where they can get the same clothes themselves. They choose good-looking girls with good taste and style to make their followers more interested in the clothes and create the thought in their heads that if they get the clothes, they will look like them. The Jones family is also a good-looking family that creates a “perfect life” to make the rest of the people in their neighborhood interested in their lifestyle and want to be like them. They used good-looking people to wear certain clothes and use certain products in order to make the products more attractive.

I think the way products are sold in this movie is unethical because the Jones family’s marketing and selling method is to rely on their “friends” insecurities and weaknesses and capitalize on their hobbies. Their way of selling starts by making “friends,” asking and learning about their needs, concerns, and wishes, and knowing exactly how to talk to them, what to sell them, and when. They use their “friends” weaknesses to sell them the goods that will fit the situation and will respond to what they are seeking and make them think they need certain things that they don’t actually need or desire before.

If I was a friend of someone in the Jones family, before I found out about their secret, I think I would be feeling a lot of pressure to keep up and a little bit frustrated that I am not good enough and that I don’t have enough. It would make me feel jealous, uncomfortable, and insecure, and it wouldn’t matter how good my life was and how much I had because they would always be better than me and have more than me. These people are getting everything they want, always look good, always look happy, have fun, and appear to be more successful and better than everyone else. After discovering their secret, I would feel that I was fooled and misled by a fairy tale the whole time. The revelation would explain everything to me, as it doesn’t make sense that life is perfect without any problems. I would feel dumbfounded that I was letting the Joneses affect and disturb me because no one is perfect. Not everything is as it seems – and social media can be a daily reminder of this. People post the highlights of their lives, leading to everyone only seeing the good things in their lives and not the whole situation. This causes people today to feel the same insecurities as I would feel if I was one of the Jones family friends. This poses the question – if everything is so perfect all of the time, then what am I missing that they might have?

Week H Assignment- THE JONESES FAMILY

The Jones family live a very unordinary life not much of a family yet they fulfill  a great purpose a salesman. When analyzing the life the Jones family lived they are easily personal sellers. They build many relationships within their social circle, with the aim of selling a product. One of the biggest sales tactics observed from the Jones family is their confidence. The Jones family relay confidence on to their customers. The Jones Family use their social influence as people to move their “friends”  to want what they use on a daily basis. A perfect example is Kanye “YE” West yeezy brand. I remember when yeezy originally came out how the products were ridiculed and criticized for the strange abstract designs. Yet Kayne maintained his high level of confidence in his product. Branding it all throughout social media, using high level media influencer and collabing with elite brands like Nike & Adidas. Honestly speaking if a friend of mind is exposed with different intentions of being my friend, it will pretty hurtful. This will push me to ask of series of question to understand why. Where is the line drawn as humans, it’s money really that much important then building relationships with true faithful friends.

The Joneses

Yes, I would categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling because the Jones family is viewed as a happy family that markets products.. Some similarities I see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands is that the Jones family kept track of their employees’ performances to see how each member was doing in sales performances. This is similar to my favorite brand, Footlocker, as they keep track of employee performances each week. I think the products in this movie are ethical because in this movie there are ethical issues and these products are marketed a certain way. If I were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret, I would be shocked.

The Joneses- Week H Assignment

Yes, I would categorize the way Jones family lives as personal selling. It is because they are personally having conversations and interactions with their neighbors and friends about those products. Not only that, they are also selling visually and through demonstrations.

Brands nowadays, are often using social media influencers and celebrities to advertise their products. Examples include L’Oreal, Zara, Dior as well as many other brands we are new to. Sometimes they don’t mention or tell us they are wearing or using that product for the purpose of advertising or that they are being paid for it. When people see their favorite celebrities wearing those products, they instantly feel a want to buy them, because if you like someone, you would also like their choice and what they use and also if you want to be like them or idealize them.

I do not think the way the Jones family markets is ethical. They are deceiving people by lying to them and not telling them their true motives. The movie itself portrays how damaging and unethical it is. Their neighbor Larry, takes his life due to his inability to pay the mortgage, as he was buying what Jones was selling to him. Getting jealous and insecure of Jones’ luxury, he overspent because he couldn’t afford it all.

If I was friends with the Jones family, i certainly would have been influenced to some degree like anyone could have been. We unconsciously do get influenced if someone we know appreciates or promotes a product. I myself get attracted towards a product if my loved ones or someone I know recommends it from their own mouth rather than a company’s advertisement. It is because it feels more real. However if I found out their secret, I would feel fooled and would instantly distance myself from them and warn other people of their reality.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?
    – Personal selling is also known as face-to-face selling, which is exactly what the Joneses did. Interactions with there neighbors telling them the perfect lifestyle and how it’s going for them and it can easily happen for consumer too. Once the consumer actually can see how the Joneses live they visualize it for themselves and thats where the selling happens

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

-Some marketing tactics the Jones family employs that relates to some favorite brands are like Nike. Nike gives out this lifestyle of health and well goodness and are with the people 100%, even parted ways with NBA Star Kyrie Irving stating that they don’t condone any anti-semetic remarks however they got kids working in there factories breaking there backs for one dollar an hour. However people forget that when you got people from all sports like LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo repping the brand and people wanna buy product because of them.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

        – The Joneses did nit market there products in an ethical way at all. I am pretty sure if someone found out the the truth on how they manipulated everyone in their town to buy there products they can file a lawsuit for false marketing/advertising or even defamation. Companies are supposed to care about the consumer however the Joneses gave up a facade.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

-If I was friends with one of the Jones family I would be disappointed. For me loyalty runs deep and I would be in shock like wow, this was really who you are. Afterward, I would just distance myself from the family member and let them do there thing and not tell anyone because its not my thing to tell but karma is gonna hit them.

The Joneses

I would categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling. Not all families are as selling as the Joneses but they knew how to sell. By selling people on “themselves” they were able to sell everything else. By incorporating their lifestyle, they were able to build communication with customers (neighborhood) and show how to use the product efficiently.

A brand that I would compare to the Joneses marketing tactics would be Good American. This brand does not only sell denim and clothing, they sell a lifestyle. Khloe Kardashian being the face of this brand allows customers to imagine themselves in her jeans. In addition, by having famous women of all shapes and colors model to market the clothing is a great way for the buyers to relate to one another. They demonstrate in order to deliver just like when Steve showed off his golf clubs.

The Joneses did not use an ethical approach to marketing. They lived a lie in order to manipulate a neighborhood into buying product. Instead of trying to relate to customers, they acted as the perfect family in order for people to want to relate to them which leads to having their product sold. I don’t believe this to be ethical behavior but it did get sales up.

Most brands use a similar method through social media.

If I were friends with the Joneses Family I would think of them as lovely people. Since there is no such thing as a perfect family, I might envy them for being so perfect.  I would not let that in the way of me being a genuine friend and would enjoy their company regarding their positive presence. After finding out their secret, I would feel betrayed. It would have bothered me to have been manipulated into thinking people are not who they seem to be, especially my neighbors.

The Joneses Assignment

Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling?  or why not?

  • I would not categorize the Jones family in personal selling.  By definition personal selling is the act of a salesperson communicating directly to the customer, in person or over the phone. In my opinion, what the Jones’s did was entirely backwards and manipulative. The technique they used to sell multiple products was dishonest and unethical, while not being direct about their sales intentions.

What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example

  • A common strategy I see between the Jones’s family and famous brands is their common goal to make a rippling effect. For example, the Jones’s made sure to convince not just one person but influence the society they live in. I believe this tactic is similar to when brands like Versace gift clothes and accessories to celebrities. This allows the brand to influence thousands or more people to want their product.

Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

  • I strongly believe the selling tactics of the Jones’s family is extremely unethical in terms of the story line. I believe the Jones’s violated their local communities trust and it ended badly for their neighbor. As for the products marketed in the movie in general is not unethical but strategic. The companies paid money for their brand name to show up in a movie with famous people, which is technically not unethical.

How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

  • If for example I was friends with the Jones’s family and I found out their secret I would feel extremely violated, angry and disgusted. I would then find out what company they work for and expose them for their schemes.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

I would categorize the Jones’s as personal selling because they are convincing the people around them to buy the products indirectly. They are advertising it by wearing, using and talking about the items, and the people see them as having it all so they want to keep up with them to feel good.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

A similarity between jones family and marketing tactics would be when popular people you see where brands the people who look up to them tend to buy the brand as well. Just like when Kate wore the sweat suit with sneakers and the rest of the women went to buy it too. When you look up to people and they have money. People want it too.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

I do think the material that they are marketing are ethical to the people they are marketing too. They are marketing to people who are assumed to be able to afford it and lives a luxury lifestyle.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

I would still be friends with the Jones’s afterwards because they aren’t forcing anyone to buy anything. It’s their jobs and it’s legal, and I am not the type of person who follows or wants something just because someone else has it no matter how much I admire them.
