When did the wage gap start getting noticed as a problem?

How much time does It take to compare all the information and numbers for the statistic on the wage gap?

Something I noticed/ experiences was when I used to work in a supermarket. I was a cashier, and another position was to be a “stock boy.” Notice how the position has the word boy at the end and only males worked in that position. All of the cashiers were females and the men worked longer hours than the cashiers which means they were paid more as well.

According to the article that tells us about impacts of Covid -19, more women than men have lost job, because usually women worked in restaurant, travel sectors, hotel and etc. There is speaking about wage of women, men and different races. According to the reading, women always have a low salary. I can say that almost every country is same situation. For example, I live in Georgia and men are leader and take a high positions in almost every realm. Men are dominants but sometimes women are more apposite for a high positions than men, because women have better skills.

reading the article and founding out a lot of information based on the gender wage gap between females and male is informative but disturbing to me.

Based on the article males get payed way more than females, such as HR managers, males make more money than females. males in that field make 2,019 dollars compared to females, they make 1,538 dollars. At first I never understood why men made more money than females even when participating in the same field.

The article also states that the reasoning for females making less money than men is mainly because of discrimination. Most females will become a mother at a point in time, so their job may feel that they are a liability. When a female has a child they usually take off work for a couple of months, so I guess their job feels that they shouldn’t get payed as much as men because the men does not take off at work when having a child, which means they are being more proactive and adding more benefits to their job.

In my opinion I don’t feel that men should get payed more than females, especially if they are doing the exact same thing . Its not like they have different positions at their job, if it was that, then I would understand.

From my own knowledge, I know that some work environments pay females more than man. When it comes to the mechanic work force , females get payed more as of today. Even though we are still struggling to get the gender wage gap to an equal pay , I feel the we are slowly getting there. but not just yet.

At this point in our lives we already know that no matter what, in this society people will always see some more superior than others. In the United States there is a lot of discrimination between race and gender. One of the things that I have gained more knowledge of is that women are still getting paid much less than man. It really doesn’t matter if they’re both doing the same job, just by being a women they’re getting paid less which is something I find very unfair. Something that really surprised me is that there is a difference of salary based on your race. When I read this weeks material I was able to see all the statistics shown and I just couldn’t believe it. I don’t understand why there has to be a problem based on your race, we are all women and no matter how we look or where we are from we can all do the same job.

As a women I feel like this problem should be fixed. I don’t think women deserve to get paid less based on their gender, race, or even disability. Sometimes women work even harder than men because they have kids who depend on them but also because they know their pay is less so they have to work for longer periods of time to earn just a little more. Women deserve to have an equal pay, there shouldn’t be any gap between gender and race.

Feminism is an ideology advocating for women’s rights on the grounds of equality for the sexes. Moreover, feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. From the past until now, people think that feminism is about women seeking to be equal to men. Thinking gender equality, equal pay for equal work, and sometimes women and men sharing household chores and parenting. I was doing some research and I found that Sex  is a biological differences term-40between men and women – their body shape, size, and sexual and reproductive organs. Also, gender is used to explain the ‘innate character’ of men and women e.g women are sensitive, emotional and caring while men are confident, logical and responsible. I quote that I was looking and made me think a lot is this one that says, “As contemporary feminism progressed, as women realized that males were not the only group in our society who supported sexist thinking and behavior that females could be sexist as well, anti-male sentiment no longer dominated the movements consciousness.” Women have many opportunities in society.

We all know how the Coronavirus pandemics have affected individual’s lives it did matter, man or women. But while reading a passage that can from The Simple True talks about who were mostly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. It states that more women were affected than men, to be more specific women of color. Considering the start of the pandemic, a large number of women than
men have lost jobs because so many works in industries that have shrunk in 2020, such as the restaurant, retail, hotel, and travel sectors, etc… I am not okay seeing this because it will make women feel like their no need for them in the outside world instead of just staying home as a domestic.

According to AAPI Women’s economic security that talks about wage gaps in women’s economy. Women in the U.S. who work full-time, year-round
are typically given only 82 cents for every dollar adjusted to their male equivalents. And when it comes to race it’s even worst, your race indicates the amount of money you can receive. We don’t choose our races you get what God gives you, but that shouldn’t determine your worth because at the end of the day we are all humans.

This weeks readings were about the gender wage. Before the reading I had basic knowledge about the wage gap. Truly, some of the statistics were difficult to understand but after further reading and research I understand. It’s insane to think that we are still dealing with this problem but understandable when thinking of the history of the United States.

One thing that was intriguing to learn was the “motherhood penalty” because I believe it to be true. In fact, it is something I have witness. I have a friend who is a mother, she was a supervisor for a fast food chain. Recently she was laid off because her infant had an emergency and she had to get her from the sitter. She took the proper steps in contacting her supervisor, he understood because he was a parent but ultimately is was not his decision to make. Before returning to work the next day she was informed she was terminated due to closing the store early. In my opinion, it was bullshit and they were just waiting for a reason to fire her.

The “motherhood penalty” is not anything new. I’ve heard countless stories from my grandmother, aunts and cousins about how poorly they are treated at certain jobs, especially when you children. Things have changed drastically, but we must continue to do work so that things are equal and equitable.

I do have a question, why were the AAPI statistics broke into sub categories? Why isn’t the same thing done for the umbrella term Black?

Women already have it tough in the workforce environment. To this day there is no such thing as complete equality throughout our nation.According to AAUW, “The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap” in the United States the statistics are clear that women had an unemployment rate during the months of February and April 2020 of 12% compared to the men that was 9%.

There is a trend to catch in the articles speaking up about the gap that there is in the workforce for people of color. I was very surprised about the data that was presented. I was not informed that in every category, race, there would be a scale of those who earn more and those who earn the minimum. For instance in the article AAPI Women’s Economic Security I was shocked that within the AAPI  women there was discrimination between each country and there was a deascalating scale within the average earnings compared to a dollar of these women. For example a Taiwanese woman could earn $1.21 and a Burmese woman could earn $0.52 and a Korean and Japanese woman come in close to earning $1.00. Once again I was very unaware that this occurred in different races. And to add on, after I read in the article that in order to make up their loss in their wages they have to work harder, longer hours, and multiple jobs. Which is extremely hard on anyone especially a person of color and being a woman of color.

The podcast  Domestic Workers Hit Hard by the COVID-19 Pandemic” (13:49) really is saddening and infuriating as well. These domestic workers which include “Those are nannies, house cleaners, home health care workers, and more working in a private home.” These type of people are the people who are the most unprotected and do not have the support of the state or the federal government. They do not qualify for healthcare, those who are immigrants, undocumented women/men of color do not qualify for any stimulus or any unemployment. That is covered when Ai-jen Poo mentions that one of their members had one cent left in her bank account when people who are citizens have received approximately twenty-five thousand dollars for their annual income due to the help that the government has given. Another topic that is mentioned is that these professions are looked upon as less.

Im very opinionated, especially whenever undocumented or immigrants are mentioned. They are individuals who have needed to give their 200% in order to thrive. My parents are undocumented immigrants and this pandemic hit our family like a nuclear bomb. My father was a restaurant worker near fifth avenue, he lost that job due to the restaurant closing. And my mother was a stay at home mom. But recently she’s a housekeeper. As soon as the pandemic hit we did not have any resources but we started to recycle bottles. The winter hit and we are still recycling bottles, my father was able to get a job as a housekeeper at a synagogue-townhouse and the owners only wanted to pay $13 the hour which is under minimum wage. Which infuriated me because in order to have such a property in the upper west side requires to have $$$. And this also is another proof that employers discredit the work and effort that it is to be a house keeper. Well my dad gave the job to my mother in order for him to search for another job to bring in a little more money to our home.T he labor is intense as a housekeepers. ( there are five floors to clean and it is incredible how tired at the end of the day you feel) I worked for three weeks and it was the worst three weeks due to how labor intensive it is, homework was unmanageable. People definitely need to be seen and given more rights.

I think everyone needs to hear everyones story, no single human being is one sided. The little things in our community is what paves the way for the future generation. Even if it makes people uncomfortable, that is how we grow! Fighting for equal pay is a fight for everything. Work that is done in our community, the more people acknowledge and speak about these topics is the way we progress. I just want to show that immigrants resort to any means, hard-workers, and they deserve more respect. This post means so much to me since it covers a topic so close to me.

When it comes to the relationship between gender and work especially in the topic of wage gap I had very basic knowledge about it, but after this weeks readings I got a better and much deeper understanding. It constantly blows my mind how us women still don’t have equal pay rights, when we work just as hard as men and most times even more. Something I learned is that pay gap has much more to do with than just gender but also includes race, ethnicity, and disability, as stated in the reading from AAUW, “The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap”As a result different groups of women experience very different gaps in pay”. There are groups of women who earn more or less than the other. This is an on going issue that needs to be fixed! I believe that us women go through so much already and we still can’t be equal.
