Angelee Torres

Hi, my name is Angelee Torres. I am a 19 year old Latina, I was born and raised in Brooklyn, Ny and I am a Libra. Something that brings me joy and comfort are quotes and elephants. One quote that brings me comfort is “Everyone wants happiness, nobody wants pain but you can’t make a rainbow without a little rain.” this quote helps me get through the days I am not at my best because I know better days are coming. I personally love elephants because they are gentle giants that symbolize strength and power.

Hamidou Soumailou

Hi! my name is Hamidou Soumailou and I am from west African Niger. I moved to the United States in 2016 when I was 16 years old. It was hard for me because my parents stayed behind. I went to High school and it was called Brooklyn International High School. Got bullied multiple times during my first year there, wasn’t a good experience. I pray no one has to go through the same adventure I went through. My aim for this semester is to focus because last semester there were a lot of things going on in my life but now I am stable.

I have a calendar I always try to follow. Saturday’s is called homework day and Friday’s is called fast food. Every Friday I will head to the Popeyes near my house and get that big size family meal just for me. People in my family think I am crazy but I do not pay attention to them. Most of my school days off I am often at work because I like to keep myself busy all the time. I love playing soccer but it’s too cold for that right now. One thing I love to do is help people out when there in need.

Hello,                                                                                                                        2/9/21

My name is Leticia Rodriguez and i identify as she/her.  This is my first semester in college.  My major is psychology/sociology, and my passion is to accomplish getting my degree,  and work as a psychologist.  This interest has become more intense, when most of my family suffers from mental challenges.  Mental illness has been in my family for generations. I would like to closely study how to make a thought and stay with that positive though.  What worked for me, was changing my thoughts from negative into positive.  Of course it was easier said than done, but i was determined  not poison my brain and get myself ill.  I often saw  my mother go through episodes i couldn’t understand and felt desperate to help her,  and trying to understand mental illness around me was never easy. I feel drawn to understanding the different sides/levels to mental health.  I want to make a difference in the our community.

I started my journey working for the non-profits organizations community clinic as a distribution clerk in the health educational services, which offered therapy, acupunture, and psychiatry. I worked my way up becoming  an administrator for Domestic Violence Mental Health Shelter for Women.

In this chaotic and changing world can become in a terrifying world we leave behind for our future generations.  Most Americans today are suffering  from this terrible disease and are undiagnosed.  Let’s right our wrongs, and take a stand against mental illness. help is out there, and we need more professionals in this field  to make that goal happen.  If for us, let’s do it for our children.

Leslie Tepoz: Introduction

Hello my name is Leslie and I am 21 years old. My birthday is in 5 days which is the 13th of February, a day before valentines day. I turn 22, it does suck having a birthday during quarantine. But can’t complain as long as I am healthy and well. I like to drink ice coffee everyday, I am one of those people that no matter if it’s 20 degrees I will still order a ice coffee. I live in Queens, and I am mexican. What brings me comfort is doing my makeup, I’ve been doing my own makeup since I was a sophomore in High School. I like to try new makeup looks and test my ability on perfecting a look I seen on instagram or twitter. It brings me comfort because when I’m down , I know if I just listen to some SZA or 00’s R&B songs my mood will change and I will feel way better.

Carly Jay Quiles Introduction

Hi, my name is Carly Jay Quiles, but I go by CJay. I am Puerto Rican, non-binary (pronouns they/he), I live in Queens and I love alternative fashion. I like to do makeup and play video games especially with my friends. I have a yorkie named Jack, who follows me around hoping for my food. I was a Cartooning Major in high school.

There’s a few things that being me joy and comfort like my friends I love talking to just about everyday. But something that brings me joy and comfort is watching YouTube videos in the comfort of my room at night. Sometimes I learn something new or I get a good laugh in my day or positive messages my way as sometimes things can get hard.

Hailey DelValle: Introduction

Hey everyone!

My name is Hailey and my pronouns are she/her. It was so lovely meeting you on our first class last Tuesday. I look forward to getting to know you all much better as the semester goes on.

I was born and partially raised in the Lower East Side, and was also partially raised in Puerto Rico, which is where I currently find myself with my grandparents and my little brother. Since arriving here I have noticed that time away from the city to decompress and recenter with everything that has been going on within the last year was much needed. I find myself laughing more and overthinking less. It has been such a great change of pace.

Speaking of what has happened in the past year, since the pandemic started and we have all been confined to the indoor world, I have picked up a new quarantine hobby- resin crafts! I find that using creative outlets has helped me deal with processing everything that’s going on, and being able to sell some of my crafts to my friends has encouraged me to continue using this method; as it makes me happy to make something with my hands and it makes me a little bit of money as well. Has anyone else picked up a cool new hobby/craft since the pandemic?

Jasmine Maldonado: Introduction

Hi! I’m Jasmine, 20 yrs old, originally from Houston, TX. I moved to New York a little over two years ago to follow my love and passion for performing (I’m a musical theatre kid through and through). I graduated from a performing arts conservatory in the fall of 2019. Of course, with the pandemic’s start, I would soon realize that my plans would change and steer me on toward another path. I knew that I would eventually return to school, but I never thought it would look like this or be quite so soon. Nevertheless, I am thrilled to be back in a learning environment, and I hope to have the opportunity to connect with yall through this class.

I have found that staying creative through this time has really been the root of my personal comfort these days. Knowing that even though performing may not be possible right now, “my voice” is not lost. Feeling as though I can still be heard through simple things that I enjoy like photography, music, or painting has allowed me to witness that my own personal creativity is limitless. I have grown more confident and courageous.

Elba Leon: Introduction

Hello I’m Elba Leon, I’m 19 years old and this is my last semester at BMCC. My major is in psychology, I’m taking this course because I would like to familiarize myself with the subject. I’m a first generation college student in the United States. I’m from a Mexican household and I’m bilingual. I was born in the city and raised in Queens and still reside in this borough. I love New York City because of how incredibly diverse it is.

I usually spend a lot of my time with my small immediate family and my close circle of friends, that usually recharges me, but I also enjoy being left alone as well. Im very much a people person and due to covid-19 it has in a way affected me because I use to interact with others so much.

My interests included doing nails for myself and others. Which means I could build a nail with polygel and do aprés gel-x and some nail art. In the future I would really want to work as a professional nail technician on my spare time. Im even considering saving up and opening up a nail salon with my friends, who are brilliant!

During the pandemic I have been riding my bicycle, since May 2020, I stay safe and wear my mask correctly any time that I do. I stopped biking in October because it was getting chilly and I managed to rack up 720 miles.

one of my favorite bike trip, from Sunnyside–>Forest Hills–>Fort Lee, NJ and back into Queens.
some polygel and nail art!

Jason Huang: Introduction

Hi guys! My name is Jason and I am a freshman here at BMCC. One thing that is very important to me is Music since I love listening to music and singing. I hope that someday I will be able to perform on stage and make a living off of that. With that being said, a song that brings me comfort is Serendipity by Jimin from BTS. I listened to that song when I was having a hard time in my life and its now something that brings me great joy. Other than music, I also love video games and spending time with my friends. Im pretty basic and while those are my only hobbies as of right now, I think im a pretty fun person to hang around ?. I hope to have a great semester with everyone and lets all pass with an A!

Ashley Concepcion: Introduction

Hello Classmates and Professor Munshi!

My name is Ashley Concepcion, and I am 21 years old. I was born and raised in the Bronx. This is my 4th semester in BMCC, and my major is Liberal arts. In the future I am hoping to graduate with my bachelor’s degree and let life take it from there. During these very difficult times that we are currently enduring I learned to appreciate the little things more than I already did and because of this I find comfort and joy in a lot of things. So, when I’m not doing homework and or studying you can catch me going for long walks, cooking, listening to all types of different music, group FaceTime calls with my best friends (that sadly I haven’t seen in a long time), and spending quality time with family.

I’m thrilled to know I will be learning lots of new things in class, and I wish you all good luck this semester!
