Support space for Asian American students at BMCC

dear all: As many of you already know, over the past year there has been a steady increase in violence directed towards people of Asian descent in the U.S.  68% of these incidents have been acts of violence against Asian women, including the devastating murders that occurred in Atlanta on Tuesday (more information here)

BMCC is going to hold an Open Forum soon which will be a space to share and learn in community. In the meantime, the Counseling Center is holding two support spaces– details below. Please share with anyone who may be interested.

Event: Support Space for Asian American Students

Time and Date: Friday, March 19 at 12pm and Monday, March 22 at 11am

Essay #2

The prompts for Essay #2 are available under “Assignments” here

FINAL PROJECT TO-DOs

  1. Read the instructions + come to class with any questions.
  2. Work on your proposal (due next week, 3/23)
    • My suggestion is to look at your discussion board posts and/or Essay #1 and/or any notes you have taken in class and/or the readings/materials + ask yourself: what’s sparking your interest? What are you feeling excited or curious about? What do you want to say?
    • Write a short proposal (~2-3 paragraphs) in which you state:
      • which form you will be working in (memoir or manifesto)
      • initial ideas about the themes or issues that you want to engage: what do you already know about and what do you want to explore?
      • if you already know: what form will you work in (an essay, or something else?)
      • DUE DATE: TUESDAY MARCH 23. You can write your proposal as a post on our course site and select “PROPOSAL” as your category. You can make it private. Either way, my feedback to you will be private.
  3. Sign up for a meeting with me before April 16 here
  4. Sign up for a class presentation here

Essay #2

Instructions: For this second essay, please expand on your in-class writing, discussion board posts, and class discussion by responding to the following questions. Your essay should be about 500 words (2 pages double-spaced, in 12 point font). You can turn your essay in on Blackboard OR as a post on Open Lab. If you make a post on Open Lab, you can write in the text box or “Add Media” and upload your document. Make sure to select Essay #2 as your category for the post.

Respond to one of the following prompts (and make clear to which prompt your essay responds):

PROMPT #1:  Compare and contrast the materials from Modules 3+ 4 + 5. How has the feminist movement changed, morphed, and grown between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? Why are these changes important Give examples from specific texts to make your argument.

PROMPT #2: Pick 2 readings from Modules 4 + 5 and do a close read. What are some of the ways that feminists in the 1960s and 1980s understand the world around them, what issues are of concern, and why? Select at least one quote from each reading to discuss and analyze. Include your response to the text as well– do these readings resonate with you? Why or why not? Are there connections can you make to the texts?
