Hello Professor Brianne and classmates,
Communication and gender classes have opened my eyes to different social issues within society and made me aware of how my contributions and my education can help reduce them.
I was very proud when I opened the Google page and noticed Marsha P. Johnson’s picture and profile. I felt that I’m part of the liberation movement because I educated myself about gender issues within the community and I’m well aware of all gender struggles that each of us goes through to thrive and to succeed. Cisgender, gay, bisexual, and transgender all have the right to live a decent life and to pursue happiness.
My perspective changed since the beginning of the class until now, I’m more aware of gender and sex bias and how as a woman of minority, as a feminine, and as a member of this community I can help reduce this bias by educating myself and my children to accept everyone and to judge them based on their merit and not based on their skin color, backgrounds, financial level, education and or gender.
Gender influences our communication with each other daily as kids and as adults because the society shapes our minds and our gender to act and to behave certain ways following the norms and the rules set up by the societal institutions like family, school, workplace, and of course media and movies.
Girls and boys are set up to play with different toys to develop their personalities. Girls are brought up to be nurtures and boys are to be the housemaster. But we today’s women’s achievement and all the knowledge surrounding us, we can create a homogenous institution and be happy if we just try to be open-minded and acceptable of everyone.
The format of the class positively affects my learning and motivation. In the beginning, I was overwhelmed with the intensive writing required in this class, but with time, and with the teacher’s support and her immediate responses to my many emails, I was able to overcome my fear and start writing and expressing my feelings and ideas toward gender ‘s impact in our life. I always got excited when reading my peers’ posts and I felt that I was having a direct face to face conversation with them even if we have never met. I can interpret their ideas and learn from their experiences.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank all my classmates and my teacher who shared their opinions on my work and made me a better reader and a better writer.
Best of luck to everyone.
Firdawce Gender Institutional Artifact “Legally Blonde”
Media and especially today’s movies reflect the social behavior and the impact of gender when it interacts with race, sexuality, social or economic class, backgrounds, and physical ability in both sexes’ male and female. Legally Blonde Movie is one of the many movies that identify with the society gender bias and reflects how we treat and communicate with each other based on sex and body parts.
Legally Blonde movie 1 was released on July 13th,2001. The actress Reese Witherspoon plays the role of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who attempts to win back her ex-boyfriend, played by Matthew Davis, by getting a Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School, and in the process, overcome stereotypes against blondes and triumphs as a successful lawyer.
Stereotyping bias, sexism, and cultural capital are some of the aspects the movie presents in the character of Elle and her struggle to overcome them. According to De Francisco, Victoria Pruin., et al.’’ Gender in Communication a Critical Introduction’ ’Gender in Communication a Critical Introduction,3rd ed., SAGE Publications, Inc. ‘’gender is not just an attribute of individuals; instead, gender is systematically structured in social institutions Gender is created, not just within families or interpersonal relationships but also within the structure of all major social institutions, including schools, religion, the economy, and the state. These institutions shape and mold the experiences of us all. (p.3 0; italics in original)’’.
This aspect of gender stereotyping bias is seeing in the society where blonde women are described as dumb, sensitive, privileged with a wealthy family, and don’t see the need to earn a degree or go to school, while Selma Blair portrayed the character of a mean strong girl with black hair and strong character. Even her ex-fiancé was mean to her and doubt her intelligence to become a lawyer by telling her that she was dumb and did not deserve to be a lawyer. Another similar show is the shows of the ‘’the girls next door ‘’ with Hugh Hefner. All his girlfriends were skinny, blonde, and somehow dump.
One other noticeable aspect is the sexism and harassment in the workplace. The movie demonstrated the sexual harassment of ”Elle” in the workplace because she is a blonde girl who dressed preppy and stylish with no power to express her ideas or creation. The movie showed an imbalance universe when men outnumber women, the statistics show that more men are lawyers than women because there is always that assumption that women are more emotional than rational.
Elle’s character as a blonde rich woman wearing pink reflected the social consideration that she is incapable of performing her job as a lawyer, this can only reinforce old gender stereotypes idea even more in a society where men and women are assigned different jobs based on their sex.
The domination of one sex over the other creates an imbalanced environment where men have more power, more knowledge, and always have a higher position is seen as a normal thing because that is the way it supposes to be and that is what the social norms are. With this power comes more strength and will to dominate and harass women and pressure them to accept flirting, unwanted advances, and or gifts.
Cultural capital is obvious in the Legally Blonde movie. Reese Witherspoon” Elle Woods” a character comes from a wealthy privileged family. Her acceptance video shows her huge pool, house, and her physical appearance that kind of bought her an easy ticket into Harvard school. All these characteristics reflect a soft stylish, rich, and well-spoken female.
Legally Blonde movie is one of the feminists’ movies that reflects the character of Elle as a woman who can change their destiny. If one is daring enough to acquire the business skills one needs, then s/he will achieve greatness. Studying and hard work can take one higher place no matter if they come from a wealthy background or middle class like the character of Paulette, the beauty professional that Elle befriends when she went to her new nail salon near Harvard.
The society can create labels for people, but it is up to the individual to revolt against their circumstances and turn them around to their advantages and be successful and happy. Elle’s personality and motivation will prove that this assumption is wrong when she becomes a lawyer and solve the case of her old fitness instructor who was accused of killing her husband. Martha P. Jonhson’s persistence paid at the end, and CeCe McDonald ‘s story and her perseverance turning around her life made her a star and a good example to follow.
”Elle’s quote: Have faith in yourself”.

1-The reading from the Performing Gender and Interpersonal Communication Research opened up a the door of the debate over feminine theory and its extension to the theoretical, fictional, or philosophical discourse, it also brings up the gender inequality between male and female, and how the power is shifted socially to a specific gender over the other one:” great satisfaction we were then able to assert that “sex is a biological designation,” and “gender is a set of socially constructed expectations for women and men.”
when one is born,s/she is full of hope and freedom that they can achieve and be whoever they want to be, but as s/he grows older they face many social barriers, limitations, and oppressions that dictate what women and men are intended to be. Following the norms of the society where one was born is inevitable to stay connected to the society and because we can’t change these rules unless we hold the power in our hand; ”recognizes that we are born into and must operate within a network of power relations, not of our own making” (p. 375)”.
Gender discrimination is related to social constructions and not to the body’s biology.” the separation of sex and gender allowed us to point to social constructions, not biological destiny as the source of women’s oppression and men’s privileges”.Some of the social discriminations that men and women face are seen in the interpretation of gender from the early stages of life and even before birth.” the separation of sex and gender allowed us to point to social constructions, not biological destiny as the source of women’s oppression and men’s privileges” Every family is waiting to have that boy impatiently because males are seen as assets and as a household leader who holds the family name, while women are seen as a burden until they find a husband.
Analyzing the gender performance, exploring the theatrical performance as a metaphor for the materialization, surveying previous research on performativity will help educate our minds and make us aware of the big gap between both genders in the community and how we can make that inequality disappear.
2- Sex is a fantasy that everyone is looking for. Extending oral and body communication in the ” Consent and refusal is not the only talking points/ sex talk” article was interesting on how one can refuse or accept an invitation, a request for sexual activity, or an invitation without feeling pressured to accept it if not it will be unethical and harmful.
we use communication every day to express ourselves to receive and send messages but I feel that we do it subconsciously that we don’t pay attention to the details, the tone, and the force used during this activity. J L Austin’s speech act theory ”focus on what an act of speaking accomplishes, as opposed to what its words mean ”. And it shows the power of words and the things we can do with them is enormous.
To engage in a safe sexual activity, we need to follow few steps: consenting to the act willingly, having clear communication about roles and expectations from this activity, willing to participate in an ethical sex act where both parties are satisfied to a certain limit.
Sexual invitation, gifts, and invitation all shared the common characteristics that leave the recipient free to turn it down without being pressured to accept or refuse and at the same time required gratitude from both sides in case of an approval of an invitation or a request for sexual activity.
Also, the method of the Safewords allowed people to engage in any given activity where certain rules are already set can be a great way to satisfy one’s desire, because both parties can exit the activity any time without explanation and without hurting each other during a sex act, or any other activity because it enables the physical and emotional safety for everyone.
3- ”Your Behavior Creates Your Gender video by the American philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler explains the fact on how someone’s behavior can demonstrate their gender regardless of their sex and physiology that was given at birth.
””We act and walk and speak and talk in ways that consolidate an impression of being a man or being a woman.”
the gender of a woman or a man is something that one should relate too and feel comfortable with. If one is given a male body but s/he feels more feminine that reflects an unbalanced fit between the gender and the sex wich will create more trouble if there is no family and or social support toward this imbalance. So if I speak and I feel as a woman in the body of a man I should be a woman because my behavior and my lifestyle reflect who I am and who I want to be.

Every person regardless of their gender, age, backgrounds, and culture seek validation at the workplace, but when faced with different obstacles that make it harder to get promoted, to get noticed by the bosses to ask for a raise, one feels discouraged and unable to move forward.
I will be examining the following the stereotyping against women and blonde based on the following movie released in 2001, and social reinforcement of these ideas.
a-The sexual harassment of ”Elle” in the workplace because she is a blonde female. Sexism and harassment in the workplace is an issue I see omi-present every day.
The assumption has men have more power, more knowledge, and always have a higher position is seen as a normal thing because that’s the way it supposes to be and that’s what the social norms are. When men hold the power they are allowed to harass women and pressure them to accept flirting, unwanted advances, and or gifts.
Women have to work even harder to obtain a promotion or a raise. I even was told once: Why do you need a raise, don’t you have a husband who takes care of your family? I’m certain that a man will never be asked the same question just because he is a man.
b-Workplace inequality toward women and the assumption that women are incapable of being a leader. Sex and gender identity reflect a lot of complex issues within our society. Just because your sex and physiology show masculine body parts like penis, hairy legs and arms, deep voice tone doesn’t necessary means that the gender has to reflect the same, and on the other hand, having a reproductive female system, short body and soft voice can’t mean that one is a woman. A person’s sex, as determined by his or her biology, does not always correspond with his or her gender, but is more related to how one feels comfortable in their body, and that this men or woman’s body part represents who they are as an individual and an active member of the society. This can have a positive or a negative impact on the job, for example, men have more chances to ask for a raise and to get promoted in the workplace while women have to work much harder to get noticed.
c-Stereotype bias where women are described as caring, sensitive, weak while men are strong and hold the power. These descriptions can portray an unfit between the personality a woman is supposed to have and has.
d- Cultural capital by comparing the character played by Reese Witherspoon” Elle Woods” and the character played by Selma Blair ”Vivian Kensington”.
Culture capital and backgrounds can also have a huge impact on one’s perception of men or a woman and their gender roles within society and at the workplace. Education, intellect, style of speech, dress, or physical appearance can influence the gender ‘s image and its reflection of society. ”Elle” character was always wearing pink dresses, hair bows, she has a small dog. Her upcoming from a wealthy background enabled her a lot of privileges like going to Harvard School, affording a nice lifestyle, and nice manicure all the time. All these characteristics reflect a soft stylish and well-spoken female.
The history proofs that Since the creation of men and women on earth until now, the division of labor has been organized according to gender roles and, consequently, some types of activity are considered more appropriate for men while others jobs are allotted to women.
The evolution of technology and social media has helped shape our minds and thinking a certain way, but if we educate ourselves and treat each other respectfully based on merit and human rights we will be on the right path to a homogenous society.

Watching the YouTube interview with Cece McDonald and the Death and Life of Marsha P.Johnson videos were very emotional for me. I felt that we as a human being still far far away from being human with each other. The omnipresence of social exclusion based on race, ethnicity, and gender is very deceiving and alarming at the same time.
Being transgender ( a gender identity that doesn’t match the sex they were given at birth. Some people can be born with a vagina, vulva but they identify as male because they feel they belong to their bodies and vice versa), and being part of a minority not wanted by the community represents a lot of challenges and difficulties from being pushed to the side to being forgotten by the society due to the lack of privileges, social justice, and the injustice of the criminal system where transgenders were put in jail just because of their sexual orientation. Marsha P Johnson’s movie on Netflix was very touching as it showed the details of her death, the escalation of hate crime against the transgender community, and the creation of the transgender movement demanding their rights as citizens and human beings.
As Victoria Cruz, the crime victim advocate was stating how far the hate crime against the LGBTQ community has escalated to murders and where most cases were gone cold because these people were not an important element of the society. Marsha .P.Johnson was one of these cases when she was found dead back on July,5th,1992.
Stonewall was a bar owned by the mafia as stated per Sylvia Rivera, Masha’s closest friend and activist, and where guy people were not allowed because of their sexual orientation. Her case was ruled as a suicide but most people never believed that she could commit suicide, but it was mostly a hate crime against the transgender community. Marsha was the backbone behind the transgender ‘s rights and Star house for homeless kids. ”her mission was about spreading goodwill and peace” Agosto Machado.
Marsha said in the video” the price you pay is high..” and she was right. She paid her life as a price to bring awareness to transgender communities and to bring their rights as a human being. She was a butterflier full of happiness and joy.
CeCe McDonald’s criminalization, incarceration in all men jail, the denial of her rights because of her skin color, backgrounds, and sexual orientation as a transgender, sex binary still proof the lack of our justice system in treating everyone fairly based on their human rights that were attributed to them at birth, the fair distribution of rights, the deprivation of the qualities resources and opportunities for everyone to have a decent life. The idea that high rates of incarceration are socially concentrated in disadvantaged communities is very popular because of its relationship to poor economic level as well as very low levels of schooling. I believe that even when CeCe mentioned that about ninety percent of the people in jail are African American that doesn’t necessarily mean that all African American are violent and criminals, but it might suggest the need of improvement of resources toward this community, and the creation of policies and practices to minimize those differences between social classes based on skin color.
Public media spreads the images that most crimes are concentrated in low-income communities of color and therefore impact the mind of most viewers and their perspective ideas on these communities. Our society still thinks and treats each other differently based on their sexual orientation from being guy, transgender, or part of a small community not wanted or rejected by society. The gender binary of sex and gender-based on the body parts, hormones, and not based on how one feels about his/herself and if he/she fit in that body that was given at birth is very challenging. Why can’t we express our Gender identity and how we feel inside through clothing, behavior, and personal appearance without being judged or misunderstood.
both cases of CeCe McDonald and Marsha P.Marshall brought up light on the evolution against the gender normativity and the revolt against the mistreatment, the hate, and the misjudgment of transgender in our community.
Watching them destroying Sylvia’s house by the Hudson river gave me chills and tears in my eyes. the disparities are invisible to most Americans because they live it and see it every day. Only the people who suffer from it like CeCe McDonalds or Marsha P Johnson can educate us about it. How can we this insensitive to a human being and deny them their basic rights? How can’t we let everyone be who they are and be happy for ourselves and them? Why we have to fit certain criteria to be able to part of this community?

Julia R Johnson pushed for the importance and the need of transgender studies within the intercultural communication and how one’s identity is constructed and influenced by the surrounding environment and the influence of certain social groups, and how each one of us can help disturb the power inequality in the society.
According to Johnson ”transgender is persons who challenge gender normative which includes persons who identify as trans-feminine, transmasculine, transsexual, two Spirit, cross-dressers, Chanticleer, same-gender-loving, in the life, female to male, male to female, inter-sex and more”. Julia’s Johnson’s description of a transgender person whose gender identity is not aligned with the gender assigned at birth. Most transgender doesn’t feel that they belong to their body and feel a disconnection to this body physically and emotionally.
Adding this feeling of not belonging and looking for the inner you to the society judgemental opinions and values will eventually create a disturbing atmosphere full of miscommunication, hate, and anger between the transgender and their community.
Julia R. Johnson argues that her definition is problematic because in ”some context some people of color transgender signals witnesses and the corresponding Western conceptions of gender binary transgender is considered an inaccurate deception of the gender identity”.
Johnson has decided to use trans with us asterisk and hyphen to signal gender non-conformity of all kinds.
The prefix Cis in Cissexual ad Cisgender means the same side as. Therefore a cisgender person is someone who’s morphology is aligns with her or his identity. And a cissexual person is someone whose sex identity matches her or his morphology. These definitions are significant because Cisgender and Cissexual people have unearned privileges that represent who they are as a government issue license, they never have to suffer from being a transgender and fighting for their rights like CeCe McDonald or Marsha ( event if CeCe is a transgender she was incarcerated in all men jail). they have no fear of being rejected from the community, their own families, and losing their job, and or health care.
The intersection of race, gender, and sexuality impacted McDonald ‘s case heavily for a lot of reasons:
a-The assumption is that African Americans who come from a poor community with low income are all violent and want to create a disturbance.
b-Being transgender and disturbing the norm of the society that only approves of Cisgender and cissexual people and support them will definitely create more fire and impact her case negatively.
Working in retail and cosmetics, in particular, opened my eyes and my personality to meet and adapt with a lot of personalities and also with transgender, guy, and cisgender people. I believe that this field will always welcome anyone regardless of sexual orientation and gender as long as one is good and professional,s/he will always be welcomed.

Privileges are special, advantages or entitlement, that can use unearned since birth and inherited or earned when reaching certain financial stability or social class. This privilege can be used to one’s benefit or the detriment of others. Checking on my privileges has opened my eyes to other social inequality and its consequences on the population.
Privileges can change from one person to another, I feel that one’s environment, family and social culture can influence this perspective a lot.
I was talking to my husband about privileges and I found out that it can be a sensitive subject to quite a few people. What I can consider privilege can be a necessity for others. for example I consider making a decent income and being financially stable a privilege because of my job and my budgeting skills, but my other wealthy friend considers her wealth a necessity because she was brought up to live a certain way and without having to work for it.
Stating these privileges is about acknowledging and confronting societal and institutional discrimination, comparing all levels of social and financial classes, gender, and their consequences on each individual. Some of the privileges I have are :
White privilege, and work for a company that I rarely see any African American work for, even if I come from Morocco that’s considered a developing country I still have a chance to fit in and have a decent job because I’m considered as a person of intelligence and authority,
A privilege to go to school without getting a loan because my work reimburses me for school expenses as long as I get an A or B grade.
Even if education is a right to everyone, I consider it a privilege in my case. I can work and go to school at the same time. Back home it will be very hard to juggle work and school.either you have a full-time job or you go to school full time.
A privilege to have all my family in the United States while other immigrants are here by themselves.
A privilege to go food shopping and buy what I crave without fear of running low on money because I can budget myself properly.
A privilege to on vacation and enjoy my time with my family.
A privilege that I can speak and write fluently Arabic, French, English, and some Spanish. I have more chances to be invited and included in the executive’s meeting where my voice and my concerns as an employee are heard.
Micro-aggressions are present in our daily life no matter what we do to avoid them, they can be intentional or unintentional toward a certain gender, social class, minority, religion. I have experienced microaggressions as a woman, as an Arabic woman, and as a mother of two.
As an Arabic woman, where media advertise that Arabic women should wear, talk and act in certain ways, the opposite of who I’m as an independent woman who speaks her mind and try to help and support her coworkers in time of need in front of the boss.
As a mother of two, most people judge me and state that I should not be working full time, going to school, and taking care of my family because my children are missing out on their mother and that I’m neglecting them. I often get the question? why, are you doing all of this, don’t you have a husband to take of everything for you? I feel like I start going to PTA meeting at my kid’s school where most of the mother’s only job is to take co their kids to raise their awareness of their esteem and their intellectual level and financial independence that will give a positive impact on their boys and girls’ life.’
It’s ironic to see that most of the privileged group in the society earn more and more privileges and have the dominant side of the power system, because they hold the higher position either in politics or financial institutions, while the unprivileged one stays behind because of lack of self-esteem,education and or social support.
I tried to show my coworker the right way to budget themselves because I feel that a woman’s confidence will rise if she is financially independent and educated. reflect on what you can do differently to use your privilege in service of others, and reduce microaggressions. I also believe the simple act of caring and active listening is a powerful way to serve others while they are venting the releasing their stress and problem to find a way to resolve them and start fresh.

Family, school, religious institutions, and media forged certain ideas, beliefs, and norms on how each gender should act, behave, and processed within a normal social constitution. all the rules learned within the family gets the same support from school and media and make it look normal to everyone. ”Gender/ sex difference sexist because of larger social forces, particularly institutions and the communication that exists within and between them.”
for example, a woman should be a nurturer and men should be the housemaster. all these institutions support the same idea so it makes it normal and if it’s questioned it becomes a taboo. The fear of being rejected from a certain society make us weak individuals who can’t make their own decision from choosing their clothing, lifestyle because of the influence of the society, the capitalism, and the advertisement that shapes our mind to think that if I’m wearing certain designer jean or bag I will look and feel confident, and therefore attract more friends and family member’s admiration.” Gender is created, not just within families or interpersonal relationships but also within the structure of all major social institutions, including schools, religion, the economy, and the state….These institutions shape and mold the experiences of us all. (p.30; italics in original).
The co-existence of the micropolitics, macropolitics, and the mesopolitics in the society and their influence throughout all the institutions like school, work, religious places makes it impossible to break free from this gender bias and from the systematic inequalities. For example the existence of the systemic sexism that forged the idea that women pay more for their items that men and even for car services and maintenance. I remember that I used to go to a mechanic to fix my car and I feel that I was in his place every other week fixing something just because I had no clues about cars and of course he was charging me more than he did when my husband came and argued with him the charged and of course he did adjust them.
one must dig deep down our social institution and try to erase the ideas of gender and sex, like the idea of hegemony that reflects the dominance of one sex over the other in the social institution. For example when the woman gets married she needs to take her husband’s name. When I got married I was against this idea because it made me feel like I have to erase who I’m as a person. After all, my name represents me so I choose to keep my name, maybe that this can seems strange but this was my way of keeping my identity as a complete woman.
The manifestation of racial, gender, and sexual orientation micro-aggressions chapter was very interesting to me. I have certainly felt and lived difficult situations where I was discriminate either because I was an Arabic woman, a mother of two that need to take care of her kids instead of working and going to school, or even when parking my car where most people think that men have more training and expertise in parking cars than women. Sometimes I chose to ignore them and move on and sometimes I had to react nicely and responded that I’m a woman who seeks more knowledge to educate herself and be a good support for her children’s future educationally and financially.
Micro-aggressions can be based on different factors from gender, race, social class, sexual orientation, social group, or religion. Our society holds a lot off micro-aggressions toward a lot of people intentionally or unintentionally, for example, the racial micro-aggression in the death of George Floyd and the debate of Black Life Matter and their suffering just because of their skin color. second, the gender micro-aggressions where women and men are treated in the work placed based on their sex rather than their merit. we rarely see a nurse men because it’s reserved for women who are nurturer based on their sex, on the other hand, the president and C.E.O job are more for men because they are considered to have the power and the knowledge to lead. Third, we see the micro-aggressions toward a marginal social group like Spanish, Muslim, poor, gay, lesbian, bisexual because they represent a small portion of the population and look at strangers and different.
Micro-aggressions are omi-present and will still be as long as we treat whoever is different as a minority and with inequality instead of opening our door and mind to learn from them . Liberty, equality is what our constitution is built on, and if we follow these fundamentals we can reach a peaceful ,unique, and a homogeneous society.

Feminist philosophy of language and its inequality in treating males and females in our society based on gender bias intentionally or unintentionally.
Reading the Stanford Encyclopedia of philosophy and the Identity Terms opened my eyes to a new world where simple words can describe powerful men and others can describe a weak woman. Reading books in Arabic, French, and English all suggested that this gender bias exists in all the languages because most of the culture gives the men the power and the woman is always the nurturer. I can also admit that thanks to recent feminist advocates and philosophers we saw a huge impact on feminism and it improved the way we look and describe a female.
The woman is not the follower, the nurturer, the weak body, and the intellectual female, but we see more of diversion and more of a positive involvement of women from all ages in all ranges of higher positions. so our language has to reflect that change as well.
Let’s say the Chief officer or the chairman is a woman why can’t she be called a chairwoman? Maleness should not be the norm anymore.
”There is sexism in language, it does enhance the position of males, and males have had control over the production of cultural forms. (Spender 1985: 144)”, once a person is born a male, he can claim all the power even in the language because he is the strongest and the most dominant creature.
Another issue was that ”One sort of criticism was that philosophy of language, like English, displays a male bias. Another was simply that philosophy of language is ill-equipped to further feminist aims”.
Society’s influence went beyond the family, the culture, and put a huge stamp on the language as well and made it male-centered. what if we were living in a world where women dominate more, will we be having the same issues, will we dominate the language and make it woman-centered?
Eventually, strength, dedication, working hard, and having a positive attitude toward anything can make a big change in resolving any gender bias issues. Genetic, physiology should not limit anyone and restrict their abilities and their dreams especially our communication and our language.
