Hello Professor Brianne and classmates,
Communication and gender classes have opened my eyes to different social issues within society and made me aware of how my contributions and my education can help reduce them.
I was very proud when I opened the Google page and noticed Marsha P. Johnson’s picture and profile. I felt that I’m part of the liberation movement because I educated myself about gender issues within the community and I’m well aware of all gender struggles that each of us goes through to thrive and to succeed. Cisgender, gay, bisexual, and transgender all have the right to live a decent life and to pursue happiness.
My perspective changed since the beginning of the class until now, I’m more aware of gender and sex bias and how as a woman of minority, as a feminine, and as a member of this community I can help reduce this bias by educating myself and my children to accept everyone and to judge them based on their merit and not based on their skin color, backgrounds, financial level, education and or gender.
Gender influences our communication with each other daily as kids and as adults because the society shapes our minds and our gender to act and to behave certain ways following the norms and the rules set up by the societal institutions like family, school, workplace, and of course media and movies.
Girls and boys are set up to play with different toys to develop their personalities. Girls are brought up to be nurtures and boys are to be the housemaster. But we today’s women’s achievement and all the knowledge surrounding us, we can create a homogenous institution and be happy if we just try to be open-minded and acceptable of everyone.
The format of the class positively affects my learning and motivation. In the beginning, I was overwhelmed with the intensive writing required in this class, but with time, and with the teacher’s support and her immediate responses to my many emails, I was able to overcome my fear and start writing and expressing my feelings and ideas toward gender ‘s impact in our life. I always got excited when reading my peers’ posts and I felt that I was having a direct face to face conversation with them even if we have never met. I can interpret their ideas and learn from their experiences.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank all my classmates and my teacher who shared their opinions on my work and made me a better reader and a better writer.
Best of luck to everyone.
