A social institution consists of a group of people who have come together for a common purpose. These institutions are a part of the social order of society and they arrange behavior and expectations of individuals. For example; family is the most basic social institution in a society and is a system of an organized relationship involving workable and dependable ways of meeting basic social needs. Religion also provides a foundation for the mores of society. Taboos in various cultures have religious sanction. Religion provides a means by which individuals can face crises and ups and downs in life with strength and fortitude. These two artifacts that I mentioned before sometimes depend so much on one from another, there is a song which is in Spanish it’s called “No Tiene la culpa” by Romeo Santos this song is about how a guy is being gone through a lot and people happened to be making fun of him because of being effeminate. There is a part where he says “He is the only son of Sofia and Don Miguel; she is very sensitive a woman of simplicity she always protects him and accepts him as he is. On the other hand, Don Miguel is very macho and anti-gay he tells him that no gay enters the Kingdom of Heaven It is written in the bible he goes straight to Hell” Religion played a big role on every family and that can take things to different situations, here is very clear how a father a child is judging his son because according to with he believes his son being effeminate or gay is just not right, that is not the way things were supposed to happen. Sexual orientation is an enduring pattern of romantic or sexual to persons of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, or to both sexes or more than one gender. The lack of communication, how our society works, and how strong our belief in any religion can be can take a lot from a person, even their life. Not to mention, our Culture and roots from where we come from can also have an immense shock on people’s point of view of men or a woman and their gender roles within society, the workplace, and family.
Religion and family are not artifacts. They are institutions. However, the song you mention could be an artifact and work great for your paper. You can write your paper about the song and then applies theories from class to it. Return to the assignment description for details and reach out if you have questions.
Hello Anaya,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. Like the Professor mentioned, you can write about the song you mentioned because you seem to be a little more inquisitive on the message you are trying to portray. I look forward to your final draft. Thank you.
Hey Anaya
As it was mentioned you should focus on the song as your artifact. I grew up listening to this song and the meaning behind it is big. You are completely right family plays a big role in our lives and just like in the song we see the father being like the masculine figure who is against his son being gay, meanwhile we see the mom being portrayed as gentle, caring and accepting her son with no judgement. I definitely look forward in reading your draft, this song as your artifact is great and will be very interesting.
Hey Anaya I think this idea is very powerful and truly captures the additional challenges marginalized communities face. In this case being Latin of African American makes a large difference in identity development because of cultural norms.
